Someone at work mentioned that both restaurants are excellent, and that Chen's specializes in dumplings of all kinds, but I don't see either restaurant mentioned by the wise and venerable chowhounds.

Has anyone been, and does anyone have any words of advice?

Silver Seafood does a very admirable job with its menu. They have a Chinese menu that is immensely more interesting that their American menu. I have recenlty tried the whole deboned chicken stuffed with ham and mushrooms. A very interesting dish that you won't find on many menus in town

All in all, its Cantonese and some Hunan done both traditionally and well. In this day and age where so many awful Chinese places thrive, that's saying something.

Silver Seafood has been talked about a lot, though not recently, do a search for Silver. Here's one thread (but notice that it ALSO gives advice to do a search because there have been posts before!)

And I know Chen's has come up at least once because I learned about the (somewhat odd) Birmingham Beef here, I'm pretty sure.

Just had dinner at Silver's Saturday night. I've been a number of times and everything's good. They were hosting a baby's birthday party. Platter after platter of whole fish, lobster, oysters, etc. were placed on the tables of the partygoers...man, I wish I'd been invited!
Highly recommend the spiced salted shrimp. Ask what the specials are...they're written in Chinese on the wall. Beer, wine, bubble teas. Try not to order off the boring "American" menu. The Chinese/Vietnamese menu has some scary stuff on it, but a huge selection. Yeah, I love this place.

Thanks for the Silver Seafood info, I'll definitely head that way soon. Any feedback about Chen's? Dumplings or otherwise?

If you go to the Chowhound main page, type in "chen’s" in the search box, then click on Chew! you’ll find several relevant posts on the Chicago board. The same approach with "silver seafood" will get additional information you may not have seen.

The dumplings at Chen's are excellent and I also highly recommend the Spicy Lamb. Here is a link to their website. http://www.chenschicago.com/about_us.htm
