1.Where can I get great licorice candy in Chicagoland, preferably plain, unadorned, and uncoated? (For the record, the best I've ever had was from a vendor on "candy street," a lane in Bologna my wife and I happened upon one night twenty years ago. Thick and dusky black like electrical cable; aromatic.)

2. Anyone know where I can buy the French breath freshener--little pieces of strong licorice--that comes in a yellow and black tin about the size of a silver dollar?

Thank you.

For question #1. Try the German stores on Lincoln/Lincoln Square (Meyer's etc might have it). Also try all the Swedish stores at Andersonville (Wikstroms etc). And old-fashioned European delis/groceries in general (the Eastern European ones on Lincoln). They might all have what you are looking for. I think these places also carry "salty" licorice which is unthinkable for Americans but beloved by the Dutch etc.

If you can make it to Holland Michigan, there are some cutesy dutch places that stock all the intense, extreme licorice you may need. It's not that far if you think about the cool chow in between, say Phil Schmidt's, Minner Dunn Hamburgers, the cool drive-in in Michigan City I've mentioned before...

Also, RST mentioned Meyer. You may want to check, in that same stretch on Lincoln, Merz Apothocary, a very European style drug store that may have the candy.

Go to Cora Lee Candies in Glenview. Waukegan Rd and Lake St.

Havent been there for years, but the owners have this licorice fetish, and have types of licorice from all over the world. Be careful, because when you ask for it you are likely to get a dissertation on licorice.

They also make the best english toffee I have ever had.
