I've been hankering for bagels of late: the most recent bagel thread comes up with several bagelerias is Skokie, plus a reco from Rene G of NYC Bagel on North Ave. Have there been any recent developments in bagel technology within city limits? I just finished off a bakers dozen from the bagel on broadway, which were ok, but I'm curious to see if there are other leads closer to home than Kaufmanns.

Jacobs Bros. were the best around for many years. Used to frequent their original Chicago Ave. store. Unfortunately, it is no longer there.

Any idea what happened to them? They made authentic, boil and bake, bagels. I haven't found a good one in the city since.

I think they sold out to the Bruegger's chain, who opened a bunch of stores here, then couldn't figure out why they couldn't sell a small amount of meat on a bagel for $7.75, and promptly died.

To be honest, Jacob Bros. went seriously downhill before it closed, management and service-wise. I once saw an employee pour a customer's cup of water back into a pitcher or cooler or something. I'm not certain the customer had drunk from it, but still.

actually, I believe Jacob Bros. has one shop still standing. I'm sorry I do not know the exact address, but it is in Streeterville, around Northwestern Memorial Hospital/McClurg Ct. ... next to a Starbucks.

There's another Jacobs Bros. still operating under that name in the Monadnock Building, but I believe under different ownership/management than during that local chain's period of excellence. Bagels have slipped a bit, every other aspect of food has slipped a lot, and service there is not a great concern of the employees.

NYC Bagel Deli remains the best place we've tried in the city.

As long as people are thinking about bagels, could someone give me a rec for great chopped liver. My benchmark is Barney Greengrass in NY. Stupendous. In Chicago, I like Gibson's and give them credit for keeping it on the menu. You can't really go there for a pint of CL and some bialys, though. As much as I want to love everything at Manny's, I feel that the huge scoop of unctuous pate they serve is not up to their other dishes. I'm happy to drive to Skokie or Lincolnwood, but would like a city rec if possible. Thanks.

The chopped liver at Fox and Obel is very nice, although the one time I've tasted it, I couldn't help but notice that the onions were a little crunchy, rather than deeply caramelized.
