An Old Fashioned Candy Shop - Old Fashioned Candies

  • v

This weekend, I made the startling discovery of the world between Harlem and Cicero on Cermak Avenue. It reminds me of the first time I encounter Logan Boulvard. Something that is so monumental, so grand, so there, yet so unknown. We've always known about there areas north and west of Oak Park in Melrose Park, Elmwood Park, etc., but what about the area south and east of Oak Park, namely Cicero and Berwyn.

For now, let me just mention one of the many cool spots on Cermak in Berwyn: Old Fashioned Candies. How many spots like this still exist, with a long, long glass case of homemade candies ("home of the french creme") plus all your favorite sugar treats of days gone by. While the chowhounditas concentrated on the packaged goods, I picked a bag full of the real stuff.

Old Fashioned Candies has that old fashioned, non-yuppie, non-glossy look. Nor are there any high falutin' flavors like cardamon or green tea. Straight forward but worlds away from Fannie May. After a great lunch or dinner at any of the establishments along Cermak finish your meal with a few old fashioned candies.

To those that have mentioned Freddy's Pizzaria on 16th Street in Cicero, my many thanks. What a place!

  1. While in the neighborhood you can also buy "old-fashioned" candies at the Ferrara Pan outlet store in Forest Park on Harrison near Harlem. Besides Ferrara Pan candies such as Lemonheads, Atomic Fireballs and Boston Baked Beans, you can buy other candies there too. (Parky's Hot Dogs at Harlem and Madison isn't far away either.)
