though, I don't regualarly purchase jackfruit. I did see some over the weekend at the din ho market in westmont. based on all experience i have with eating fruit in asia, I am pretty sure anything you buy here is gonna be a pale imitation of your memory. You can also get jackfruit shakes at a number of places on argyle.
if you do go to din ho, in the international mall/food court I had a very nice version of crispy salty spicy squid from the vendor on the left as you walk in (the closest to emperor's choice). Stay away from the "pork donut" though (couldn't resist the name)

Where's the Din Ho market located? And any other info would also be very much appreciated? Thanks.

I think that Zim meant to say "Diho" Market. The address is 665 Pasquinelli Drive, in Westmont. Their telephone number is 630.323.1668.
Cheers,
Erik M.

Thanks very much. Searching on Diho now also brings up the earlier thread about Diho. Worth a trip sometime. I'm also intrigued by the Five Continents place mentioned in the other thread.

We were driving east on Dempster Saturday from Waukegan Rd to the expressway I noticed a Din Ho market on the North side of the street. Also noticed several Korean Restaurants but hubby was in a hurry to get home to the bears game so I can't offer more.

Morton Grove, IL 60053
Tel: 847-965-8688

thanks for the copy editing erik--there could be a full time job there for you.
Di Ho is basically at Archer and Ogden. I am not sure it's a destination spot but if you are out that way, it's worth a stop in. I think i saw a metromix article on it and mitsuwa recently too

You might want to try Richwell Market. It opened last year and offers a large variety of asian products. A bakery and chinese styled BBQ store is also located in the market. It's in the South Loop on Canal Street just south of 18th street and just north of the river.

I have wondered if jackfruit is what is known in Brasil as jaca, a large fruit that separates into segments about the size of brasil nuts in the shell, and has sort of fibrous flesh with a pit inside each segment.
Anybody know?

Yes, jaca = jackfruit = Artocarpus heterophyllus

Thanks, Rene. I thought it was. I had one straight off the tree once, and thought it tasted like banana-flavored elmer's glue. I was about 5 days shy of having an emergency appendectomy, though, and much didn't taste good to me. Somehow I never wanted to try it again.

I have seen whole jackfruit in the freezer at the small Thai grocery on Kedzie, hard by the Brown line tracks. Sorry, the name of the place escapes me and I have no idea about the effects of freezing on the noble jackfruit (but I guess I'm skeptical).
