Doing my duty part two - You know what, Yunann pretty good

This weekend, I knocked off two of my chowhound quests. First, I sampled Korean chicken. Then, I tried Spring World, the only resturant in Chinatown that *I know* featuring Yunnan cusine.

The Spring World menu features a variety of unnusual dishes, although there is some overlap with the great menu of Lao Sze Chuan. So much stuff, that my table practically froze in ordering terror, afraid that I was in the mood for hot and spicy pig tongue or fried intestine with spicy pepper. Still, I got to order by asserting rights under Ms. VI's newly minted birthday rule whereas the birthday person gets to pick the menu (first claimed by Ms. VI at Happy Chef a few weeks ago).

From the Yunnan specials, I ordered the special "Across the Bridge" noodle soup, the cold eggplant and the spicy baby chicken with ginger. From the Szechwan side, I ordered the hand shredded chicken with spicy sesmane vinagrette, string beans, spicy pan fried slice pork and dumplings. We also had great just greasy enough scallion pancakes, whose region of origin, I do not know.

This is not your parent's cantonese food. Robust, oily, spicy, rich and thoroughly delicious. Needless to say, the rushed service of Lao Sze Chuan was missing. Where English lacked, warmth and desire made up. Do try.

Now if someone can only try some of the following:

- Tropic Island Jerk Chicken
- Asi En Guerrero Pozoleriza
(Both on North Avenue)

    Hey VI,

thanks for the report. How was the Across the bridge noodles? Did you see any one order General Mao's Pork? just curious.

Hey where is the Tropic Island on North-- If it is the same folks as on the south side they make a great jerk chicken.

Thanks, I want to try Spring World now more than ever. I actually tried to go a couple weeks ago. I had picked up a menu a while back that said they were open until 2am. Got there around midnight only to find they now close at 10pm.

I, too, am curious about Tropic Island on North Av. The 2 on E 79th St (one with a drive-through jerk window!) are really great places. Just to get you in the mood, here is the Tropic Island Jerk Chicken Poem copied from their menu:

      Remember--
      Jerk chicken is good,
      Jerk chicken is nice.
      Eat it with dough bread,
      Or red beans and rice.

I'm not familiar with the concept of "dough bread". Be sure to try it and post on it.
