Incredible dessert from Trotter's to Go
- Adam Stephanides
I've bought things from Trotter's to Go (1337 Fullerton Ave., 773-868-6510) several times, and found it inconsistent: some of the items are quite good, and some are ho-hum. On my last visit, though, I had an amazing dessert: a caramel-macadamia tart with chocolate coffee ganache. I'd had desserts like this before, but this was definitely the best of its kind, with the sweetness of the caramel and the texture of the macadamias setting off the intensity of the chocolate and coffee flavor perfectly. In fact, it was pretty much my ideal dessert. It was expensive (twelve dollars for a six-inch tart), but worth every penny.
Another very good dessert-type thing they make is their macaroons. These are not the French-type macaroons, as you might expect, but the American type, with the coconut; but, again, by far the best of this kind I've had. Their brownies are also very good.
A savory item I had on my last visit that was very good was a crisp risotto cake with proscuitto and other things (which I forget) on top. This was delicious, and not expensive, though I forget the exact amount.
The selection of items offered changes, so these items may not be there when you go.
(Disclosure time: my stepsister went to high school with Mr. Trotter, and I have a friend who has two siblings who have worked for Charlie Trotter's; presumably as a result of the latter connection, I was comped by Mr. Trotter once.)
