Chicken Fried Steak?

  • a

Recent Texas transplant to Chicago, searching for a good Texas-style Chicken Fried Steak in the city. (Mashed Potatos, Cream Gravy, etc...) Thanks!

my boyfriend swears by the chicken fried steak at rock bottom brewery on grand avenue and state. (right by red line el stop).

    1. I lived in Chicago for about 5 years, about 6 years ago. Now that the Kozy Kafe is gone (I had my first intro to grits there...), I know of only one other place that my then Tar Heel girlfriend would eat CFS - this is gonna sound weird: Ed Debevic's

I know it's a chain and I know the one downtown is a tourista place but she really liked the CFS there. Their spuds are good too... And don't forget a 'World's Smallest Hot Fudge Sundae' (it's made in what looks like an old eye-cup!)...

Try Wishbone (2-3 locations now in Chicago) for some nice southern-style stuff too - great breakfasts, too...

I have also had a very good chicken fried steak at Chili's in Skokie. It was recommended by a friend who grew up in southern Illinois and is a devotee of CFS.

      2. Dixie Kitchen in Hyde Park has great chicken fried steak and everything else you might want.

I must concur. When I lived in Chicago I would make the trek to Hyde Park and the Dixie Kitchen for southern food. They had fantastic KFS and pecan pie. Make a visit to the South Side. Who knows, maybe you'll stop at Harold's for some fried chicken livers to go sometime?

        2. If you live in the near north side, you might want to try Stanley's on the corner of Sedgwick & Armitage. Excellant CFS & gravy, in fact I prefer theirs to Dixie Kitchen.
