I've never actually eaten shawarma (what with being veg and all), but my brother swears by Ashtar, on Sparks. Their falafel is pretty darn good, too.

It comes down to personal preference, but my favourite for many years has been Marroush on Elgin ("chicken garlic").

Shawarma Palace on Rideau Street (beside the Gregory Leather store). I thought I was onto something good when the night I popped in and the place was packed. Its always packed every time I go there. The food is delicious and the service is fast. You have to put this on your list of places to try. The brown rice is fragrant and delicious. The platters are excellent too. And the chicken is outstanding - I asked once how they keep it so juicy and was told it was because they use thighs in-between the chicken breasts when cooking. Worth a try!

I agree that the Shawarma Palace on Rideau is the place to try. Doesn't look like much, but it's very tasty, always fresh (so busy, nothing sits there) and huge portions.

I realise this was a while ago but I thought I'd give my input for those who're looking!
The Shawarma place right accross from the Bytown Theatre on Rideau street is the best there is in the Centreville core. If you're willing to go to Orleans- you HAVE to go visit the Garlic King at Really Lebanese on St. Joseph Bvd. BEST Shawarma ever! He also has a new location on Bank St...which is closer to downtown. Shawarma Chef on 10th Line Rd. is also awsome.

Im newly returned to Ottawa after an absence of 8 years, and upon getting back, I soon realised that I had better figure out what Shawarma was! I think we have a Shawarma place to match every Tim Hortons store out here, anyways, Im still wading my way through all the vendors, but a far better exposed friend out here swears by the little place on Hazeldean Road (Kanata) its in a new strip mall hidden by (go figure) a Starbucks, Im pretty sure that was Shawarma Prince.

Alissar Kabob house on St. Laurent. Not close to downtown at all but I would go back just for the food. The service is pretty interesting too. Best service I have ever had at a Shawarma place. Alissar himself is very nice guy and obviously takes a lot of pride in his work.

David Pizza & Shawarma on McCarthy Road is absolutely the worst I have had. The product is unreliable, poor and returns for the same are not accepted. Enjoy yourself; go to Maroush on Rideau Street in the Market.

Really Lebanese has moved to Montreal Rd near where the old Pizza Hut used to be. If you can make Dave (the cashier) laugh with a joke, you get your Shawarma free! (And it's GOOD Shawarma!)

Really Lebanese is my absolute favourite, too... great, nice, strong garlic flavour. I live just down the street from it and can't get enough.
Most people, though, seem to think that Shawarma Palace is the place to be. I used to live around the corner from it and tried it a few times and wasn't really impressed. Nothing wrong with it, but after Really Lebanese, everything is a little disappointing by comparison.

I used to go to Shawarma Deluxe on Dalhousie a lot when I lived in Ottawa. Their garlic sauce was awesome.
Last time I went to Shawarma Palace they had a roof leak and the ceiling tiles burst open right next to the lineup. Food was great though.
