It will be our first visit.

Do you know if they are open for lunch?
If not, when do they open? 7 days a week?
(Their website does not list any opening hours)

Thanks!

The Guu triumvirate of restaurants is not open for lunch. It's a tossup for me, really. I like both Guu with Garlic on Robson Street and Kitanoya Guu with Otokomae in Gastown, giving a slight nod to the Gastown location for its quirky cocktails menu. Note that you can make reservations, a rather prudent suggestion as they are ridiculously busy at dinner hour.

Enjoy your visit!

I agree with Mooshiemouse. It's a toss-up between the two. Guu with Garlic on Robson is my personal fav, but mainly because I like the vibe better - it's more casual (more screeching from the waitresses, more casual decor, smaller place) and it's also closer to me. I like sitting at the bar, and outside on the patio. But the gastown location has its perks too - the funky cocktails and a nicer spot for a nice dinner with conversation, a more relaxed atmosphere, and the deep fried mochi (rice ball) dessert with sweet sesame paste is a must-have if you go to that one (and they have it on the specials list). Here's my post about Guu with Garlic -http://nancyland.blogspot.com/2005_02_01_nancyland_archive.html - I named it my very fav restaurant in Vancouver when I wrote this, but that might be changing soon. I think I was there on an off night (it was a Monday) about a month ago. Nothing concrete that I can pick out exactly, but the food just seemed a tiny smidgeon less spectacular than normal. Less love put in, maybe? New staff? I don't know. Still prettty damn good anyway, and service was excellent.

Guu on Thurlow is open for LUNCH. They serve lunch Monday - Saturday from 11:45 - 1:30 (sometimes they close earlier becuase they run out of the specials).
The lunch is nothing like the dinner. No small plates. Here is an example of what they offer for lunch.

-Chicken Katsu Don (in a bowl w/rice)
-Beef Curry on Rice
-Chicken Teriyaki Don (in a bowl w/rice)
-Grilled Mackeral with a side of rice (mu favorite)
-Grilled Pike Mackeral with a side of rice

The lunch is very good and very cheap (nothing over $7) There is always a daily special, plus a few other dishes that I can not rememeber.

But for dinner - my first pick is Guu with Garilc (on Robson).

Opps sorry forgot to answer your question about dinner times:

They are all open 7 days a week. They open every day at 5:30pm - stay open till at least 12:00am (later on the weekends) Gas Town may close a bit earlier.

To avoid waiting either go a bit before 5:30. If not you will have to wait. The line does tend to move fast, but never fast enough is you are hungry!!
