Hi,

We're looking for good authentic Asian fare (we love Vietnamese, Japanese and Chinese, never have tried Korean)for Friday night before heading to a movie at Eau Claire.

Any suggestions? We've eaten at Y2K before...

Thanks!

1 Han's Restaurant, in City Plaza. This is a tiny hole in the wall where Malay Wok once was. It is Taiwanese and everything I've had there has been fantastic. Try the spicy beef noodle soup, a Taiwanese specialty (it is LOUD in flavour, not at all like pho) or the chili chicken (whatever it's called therekung pao or governor's chicken, it's on the pictures above the dining area).
2. Harbour City- okay I've only had dim sum there but keep going back.
3. The other resto in City Plaza, the larger one right in the centre off the food court... dammit the name is escaping me, but they have a huge assortment of congees there (I like the chicken, chickenshit that I am, which looks insipid but it's so full of flavour) and just incredibly cheap but tasty stuff.
4. It's not dinner, but Try Again for the best bubble tea!
5. You've been to Y2K but have you had what I think is their best dish- their curry chicken fried rice? It's inspiring stuff, and a huge portion

I guess I go to all the same places too often in chinatown- I've been to Silver Inn, Treasures of China and Sushi Tokyo as well, did not care for Tokyo but did enjoy the other too, just too unfamiliar to make them my top 5.

Everybody, please try Han's, they are in that terrible location but the food is amazing!

How could you leave out the Vietnamese sub place across from the Harry Hays building in Chinatown! When I visit Calgary I always go, it blows away any Banh Mi place here in Vancouver. Defin worth the lineup each time Ive gone. Its on my list of places to hit up when I go to Calgary next week. I hope its still open when I go there.

I left it out because the poster said it was dinner before a movie at eau claire, and Banh Mi Thi Thi is only open during the day. It is indeed fantastic.

AND you are in luck. Not only is the Thi Thi at Harry Hays still open, but they have a new location, with SEATING and open until 7pm weekdays (and, I think, Saturday) on 8th Ave, right by the uptown cinema, the block between 6th and 5th streets. It is on the north side where that horrible Toronto chain called Megawraps died a not-soon-enough death. (I see Megas all over Van, and I pity you guys). I talked to the owner of the new one- it's the first in franchises for thi thi, and he is looking for a location on 17th Ave!

Your #3 (larger restaurant in City Plaza) is probably Double Greeting. They have various fried noodles, rice, etc. in there as well as Congee.

I would also recommend the Veggie place in the City Plaza food court - delicious stuff, although not necessarily for everyone.

that's veggie house, but the food court is only open until 6, and I got the impression this was a dinner request. that's also why I didn't list Thi Thi.

Being Asian, here are my fav places to eat in the Chinatown area..

Sunny's is good for Vietnamese
Golden Inn for traditional Chinese
Banh Mi Thi Thi for Vietnamese Sub
Wa's for Sushi, although it's 16 blocks north of Downtown on Centre Street

For quick "hong kong style cafes" Calgary Court is acceptable.. so is ABC on 3rd ave.

Personally I prefer the bubble tea place in Dragon City Mall.

Tropica is "alright" for Malaysian cuisine.. ever since Malay Wok moved out of City Plaza I haven't had as much Malaysian as I used to enjoy

There's a Japanese Noodle place whose name escapes me at the moment, it's on the east side of Centre Street, about 15 blocks North of Downtown.. kinda between Tropica and the Brick.

For desserts, check out Yamato, they make great desserts, mousses, and Japanese-style cheesecakes. They're on centre street as well, just a bit north of downtown.

Your mileage may vary.. esp if you like western chinese foods..

U&Me is THE place to go for dim sum and other good eats with my Chinese and non-Chinese friends. They are open very late - probably the only place in town where you can get "special tea" (beer in a teapot) after 2:00 AM.
