French-Canadian Restaurants in Vancouver????

For an upcoming visit to Vancouver from San Francisco I'd like a unique dining experience. Although we have nearly every type of cuisine in the Bay Area, French-Canadian is not one of them. Are there any such restaurants in Vancouver?

  1. Good question. I don't think so. There is a place on Denman that serves barbeque chicken and smoked meat for the expats from Montreal but Quebecois cuisine apart from 7/11 efforts at poutine, I do not think so.

If you want tarte au sucre, feves au lard, tourtiere and the like I suspect you'll have to head east on another trip to a place like Quebec City.

    1. There most certainly is: Zizanie at 1607 West 7th Avenue. A link to Tim Pawsey's review in the Vancouver Courier of Zizanie's homestyle Quebecois cuisine can be found at http://vancourier.com/issues02/112102/entertainment/112102en6.html

      Restaurant website is noted below.

Also on West 7th is Salade de Fruits, 1 block east of Zizanie in the Centre Culturel de Francophone, but it serves French bistro fare. A local restaurant guide's review of Salade de Fruits is at http://www.evevancouver.ca/food/sgranville.htm#Salade

      Bon appetit!

        Thanks for correcting me Mooshmouse.

Zizanie sounds like one of the many spots one could walk into on Rue Beaubien Est back in Montreal...from tourtiere to smoked meat to hot chicken sandwich to pea soup...

My teeth are starting to "ache" just thinking of biting into a piece of tarte au sucre.

Add some KIK cola or genuine spruce beer and it would be the complete package [smile]

      2. Just be sure to try the gelato in Vancouver. When I was in SF last August I could not find a single gelateria in SF- just Ben and Jerry's and assorted corporate crap. (And on that note, since I could not find a listing in the phone book and the locals could only point me in the direction of Haagen Dasz and B&J, please tell me where to get gelato in SF!)

        1. re: John Manzo

I can think of a few gelaterias in SF off the top of my head:
-Ciao Bella Gelato in the Ferry Building at the foot of Market Street
-Gelato Classico at 201 Parnassus & Stanyan near the beginning of Golden Gate Park (and the Haight-Ashbury and UCSF areas). They also have branches in the Richmond at 750 Clement (9th Ave) and North Beach (57 Union @ Stockton)
-Tango Gelato at 2015 Fillmore (upper Fillmore, probably around California St).
There's also a new gelato place (combined with a Belgian chocolate store) coming soon in Noe Valley at the corner of 24th and Sanchez.
It seems likely that there are other gelaterias on Chestnut or Union in the Marina or in North Beach or in the Haight or in the Castro. There used to be one south
of Market around 3rd and Folsom but I can't place it exactly.
If you're willing to put up with a local ice cream (with some unusual Latin and Pacific Island flavors) I would recommend Mitchell's at 29th and San Jose in the Mission/Noe Valley area, which just celebrated its 50th year.

            Thanks!

When you're in Van be sure to check out Mondo Gelato, preferably the one on Denman near Davie!

            1. re: John Manzo

Since we have stayed for years at the Sylvia Hotel during our yearly visits to Vancouver, my group has been to nearby Mondo Gelato on Denman many times. It is quite extraordinary and I must admit better than the gelaterias in San Francisco that I listed, certainly in its huge variety of flavors. Between that and True Confections up the block on Denman (& near UBC) and Over the Moon chocolates on West Broadway we pretty much stay on a sugar high the entire trip.

Try Chocolate Arts on West 4th Avenue in Kitsilano. Once you sample their wares, there's no looking back.

And Senses (Sen5es) downtown on West Georgia at Howe for the world-famous desserts of Chef Thomas Haas. There are also the exquisite creations of Pastry Chef Peter Fong at Ganache Patisserie on Homer Street in Yaletown. Certainly not to be missed.

                1. re: Mooshmouse

Is Sen5es in Van a full-service resto like in Toronto (this might have changed) or just desserts?

                  1. re: John Manzo

Sen5es Bakery in Vancouver is only a retail location. Diva at the Met, where Thomas Haas provides Pastry Chef consulting services, is only a few doors north.

Earlier this year, Thomas Haas opened a production facility and factory outlet in North Vancouver for his chocolate creations. The website for Thomas Haas Fine Chocolates is http://www.thomashaas.com/, and I've provided a link below to Angela Murrills's writeup on the new digs in the Georgia Straight.

        2. Try the Zizanie Cafe & Bistro
          1607 West Seventh 604.738.7387
