a new place in kensington called shwarma station just opened a few weeks back. we had a chicken shwarma and a falafel sandwich. both were amazing! all ingredients were fresh and the sauces n spices were perfect! i have always been a big fan of falafel king downtown, but i think this shwarma station is just as good if not better

Boo-urns to Shawarma Station!!! Maybe I need to go back and try it again, because the first time I went was a week after they opened, but it was crap. Dry, underseasoned chicken -- served from a warming tray no less -- in a cold pita with soggy veg and flat sauce. NO THANK YOU. Now, Shawarma King on the other hand...I nearly weep just thinking about the lamb shawarma -- lamb cut off the rotisserie, perfectly pickled turnip, great sauces -- with a Dr. Pepper. And the family that runs the place...my girlfriend says that the old man has the most beautiful eyes...Anyway, that's my $.02.

By Shawarma do you mean donair? i.e. beef on a big turning spindle?

If so, try A&A Foods on 20th Ave NW, and Falafel King on 1st st downtown ....

I think if you scroll down you'll find a discussion about this.

      John, can you help?

I got to check out those places you mentioned I just got back from Tazza, and if they are as good as this place then moving to calgary is going to make me fat!

the most amazing chicken shishtawok (Chicken shawarma) I have every had and I have been all over the Arab world.

        thanks miles for the help

          Hey,

I can vouch for Tazza. They are definitely the best in town and the most reasonably priced. The atmosphere is cool, the neighborhood is totally full of interesting characters ... its like watching a story unfold before your eyes if you go down there enough and get to know all the players. Its really quite funny.

AND THE CHICKEN SANDWICH (Shish Tawook) IS TO DIE FOR!

Donair? Whatever. Why would you want hamburger when you can have steak for the same price. So they make a policy of not serving it but for Shawarma and Shish Tawook you cant beat this place.

Do you get it??? Can I be any less subtle???

YOU MUST EAT HERE ... lol

          ok ... theres my rant.

Tazza- that's in Bridgeland? I'll give it a try!

            My faves:

            Shawarma King, on Kensington Rd
Felafel King, 1st St (SW) downtown
Sammy's on 17th ave SW at 12 St (takeout only- his chicken melts in your mouth)
Pita..... Pita Express? Not sure of the name, in the same bldg as Drinkwaters by Olympic Plaze; do not be fooled by the name, it is serious Lebanese good stuff
A and A- This place is belly burstin' heaven, and I love them even tho they do not do the sandwich press treatment. For some reason their pita is just so tender there is no need.

Avoid- I am no fan of Cedar's, did not like them at U of C and with 3 fantastic options nearby I would not bother; any of the pita pizzazz type joints; well you can tell crap pretty easily actually.

As to your rant on donairs- WORD WORD WORD ad infinitum. I might have a taste for one in a blue moon but people who order it all the time- man try some grown up food!!

I am sure they are all good.

However, try a Tazza chicken on a saturday. Usally they make there own bread and then they toast it in a ferno wood oven. You got to ask for that one.

Tazza is in Bridgeland. Its right on the main drag. There used to be an ice cream store there and they converted it to Tazza.

Mr. John Manzo ... I'll see you in Bridgeland. You take memorial to edmonton trail. Turn onto 1'st ave NE ... go past the new condo development and its on your ... hold on ... I'll get the address ...
                  1105 1 Ave. NE

Right by that newish sushi place, Zapang- I'll say it again, Bridgeland is becoming amazing. And many of those new condos will have main floor retail. A whole new Kensington!

I've been meaning to try Shawarma Station because I've heard great things about it, but I haven't yet because the Shawarma King just down the road at Kensington and 14th st ROCKS so much. I had a Falafel from there last night, and I was too full to eat supper. And I didn't order a large. They also have a wondrous lentil/rice/onion dish and a chickpea/eggplant dish that I'm coming to love dearly. And they're open until 4AM.
