Hi,
I'm a big fan of izakaya cuisine, my two favourites are happa izakaya, and the guus(of course). I've also been to the izakaya place on Davie st.(forget the name). Are there more delicious izakaya bars in Vancouver? Thanks for the help!

We tried out Shiru-Bay (Chopstick Cafe)last night and the food was very good!! They offer a top 12 menu as well as a regular menu (the top 12 is kind of similar to Guu's daily specials.)From the top 12 we tried the Asparagus Gyoza for $6.80 (asparagus and minced pork wrapped in gyoza skin and pan fried) these were outstanding!!! We also had Sui Gyoza $6.80 (poached dumplings w/ steamed vegies) these were a little over steamed and floppy. They were just a basic pork gyoza & the menu had no description of pork being in them. We thought they were vegi ones but one bite into them we realized they were straight up pork. However, we managed. From the regular menu we had the Beef Lettuce Wraps which were amazing. They came with 6 strips of beef, side of kimchi and lettuce. The serving ouf edamame was HUGE!! Enough for 4 people so at $3.50 it is a good deal. We also had Moro-Kyu(Cucumber with sesame and miso paste.) A very light and crunchy snack. A great start to the meal. All in all (except for the Sui Gyoza) the food was GREAT!!! Be prepared to spend. This place is not Guu prices but what can you expect from a Yaletown restaurant.

Shiru-bay!! My favorite place in Vancouver to go to. The environment is really fun, with everyone gretting you when you come in or when you leave....it's very cozy. I definitely couldn't keep myself from ordering too much food. Now i'm craving the cheese tofu!!! It's a must-try if you make a trip there.

Yuji's on West 4th Avenue without question. I especially love their Maguro Avocado Crepe and Kiwi Roll, and I've never tasted anything quite so unusually delicious as their crab and avocado Sushi Gratin. Their Maguro Mari-ne is also excellent: chunks of tuna sashimi in a trio of sauces. Prices are about on par with Hapa Ikazaya.

Although it has it's naysayers, I personally loved Japone on Oak Street near West 70th. It's on the pricier side, but the dishes on their Chef's Specials menu are always outstanding. They have a Negitoro Mille-Feuille that's out of this world. And there's this amazing slow-cooked pork dish served encased in pastry kind of like a Wellington and drenched in an amazing sauce. Wish I could remember the name.

What was Umami on Davie Street like?

Thanks everyone! now i've got more places to try!!

Umami on Davie was not as good as i hoped, having tried guu and happa, we expected a taste sensation, or atleast innovation to our favourites, it was a nice dinner but that was about it, because for me guu and happa is an experience, haha. Can't wait to try the other recommendations, and please if you know, keep them coming.

If you are referring to "Ti:Z", the food SUCKS. The food sounds appealing while perusing the menu, but when it comes down to the actual execution, the food fails.

Its been over a year since I went there, but from what I recall the croquette we ordered was too greasy and the salmon rice gratin was really bland.

The newer "izakaya" on Davie that I'm aware of is called Umami. I thought that the dishes were kind of hit and miss...

Just my 2 cents.

Not very "guu" style but En restaurant on Granville ( 2686 Granville St.) is also a new-style Japanese restaurant featuring some Italian-Japanese-mixed fushion dishes I would say. I haven't been there for a year already so I dunno about the quality lately. The food is a bit more expensive than the others but the atmosphere is great that you don't feel like eating japanese food (they give you fork and knife, and a pair of chopsticks). At least smth new...

I almost forgot....Yuji (on west 4th). The food is outstanding. They offer both sushi and Japanese tapas items. A few favorites that top my list: Nori Maki Salad (sushi rolls minus the rice) they are a great alternative to a salad. The Tofu Sushi Trio (tofu topped with chopped scallop, spicy tuna & tobiko)this is my new favorite way to enjoy tofu! My all time favorite dish is the Tuna & Salmon Wasabi Tempura (fresh tuna & salmon sashimi wrapped with seaweed, lightly deepfried so the middle is still rare)...need I say more!!! They even offer infused sushi items such as the Mango Maki Roll. Their regular sushi is very fresh and extremely good. This place is quickly becoming a regular spot for us.
