Truffles in Calgary

Does anyone know if there's a place to get truffles in Calgary? I would also like to know the names of some other sources of "specialty" foods in Calgary. I don't live in the city, so only know of Wrayton's, Janice Beaton, and Springbank Cheese, as well as the various Oriental markets.
Thanks,
Phil

  1. The Cookbook Co. Cooks at 722 11th Ave. S.W. has truffles in the front cooler. You might also try the Italian Centre in Bridgeland (Victor's, to us locals) for white truffles.

Other good specialty stores include Edelweiss on 20th Ave NW for German and Northern European stuff, the Italian Store on Skyline Way NE for Italian, the Dutch Cash and Carry on 16 St SE ... and there's heaps more. Are you interested in a particular ethnic type (as that's how it seems to break down here), or more of a Dean and Deluca thing, where they stock lots of different stuff? I can point you more intelligently with some specifics. One really good specialty place comes to mind though: Valbella meats in Canmore.

Of course, the restaurants have access to Worldwide Specialty Foods, a haven of all good things, but there's no retail.

    Cheers, Miles

Thanks for the info. I'll slowly (only get into Calgary a few times a month) start checking out these places. I'm not really looking for anything else specific, just "new" exotic foods to cook with, or try.

Do you know of a guide either in print or online for exotic food stores in Calgary? I haven't been able to find much.

I definately agree with you on Valbella's, their products are awesome. Since it's just down the road from me, I shop there all the time.

      Thanks, Phil

The Food Lovers' Guide to Alberta has just been published. It should have tons of interesting info on all this sort of thing. you can also get it at the Cookbook Co.

I have been trying to hunt down Truffles in Calgary, not of the Chocolate variety. Does anybody know where one might be able to pruchase some.

        Thank You
