Good eats across Canada
Traveling across Canada on business as I do, thought it was time to share a few favorites over the years:
MONTREAL: Casa Galicia, St Denis Street, east side just south of Sherbrooke - $7 cab ride from downtown hotels: good Spanish good, ace Sangria and fabulous garlic toast if you ask for it !
MONTREAL: Queu de Cheval, Dorchester Blvd. (Rene Levesque), north side, a block or two west of Stanley - near the Sheraton and north of the Molson Centre: outstanding steak and seafood restaurant in converted industrial building. Sophisticated wine list and service. Very expensive - worth it.
TORONTO: Senior's, Yonge Street, east side, at Pleasant Blvd which is one street south of St Clair - go upstairs off Pleasant, across street from back exit of St Clair subway stop (NB NOT St Clair West station). Flavourful steaks in retro family-owned ambience - half the price of the downtown steak palaces.
CALGARY: Caesar's, steak house on the main drag (7th SW ?)- ignore the snotty maitre d' and enjoy fantastic beef and fair wine list in sometimes crowded but usually pleasant surroundings.
VANCOUVER: Le Crocodile, french restaurant on ground floor of a condo building close to downtown - the cabdrivers know it - Extremely willing service, fine food and wines in a welcoming, quite formal but not stuffy atmosphere. Far better than the much over-rated gourmet restaurant at the Four Seasons.
