Two Brooklyn chowhounds--one Canadian, one, uh, not Canadian--spending a month in a cottage in Penetanguishene, hoping for some chowish advice. We plan on lots of fish-and-chips and the occasional (or more than occasional) box of Tim Bits, and lots of fresh stuff from the fields and orchards, but welcome any tips.

Luxury dining in the area would be the Inn at Manitou in McKellar, serious wine cellar. Tuesdays and Thursdays are bistro type casual, the rest of the week gourmet.

Have also been hearing the food at the Little Britt Inn is very good, they have a website with more details.

Other than that Don's Bakery in Bala is supposed to have the best butter tarts and baking.

Enjoy your stay.

I spent a number of summers as a child and teenager around this area. It has very unique
Geography as it borders Muskoka, the rocky terminus of the Canadian shield. Be sure to take a drive (or boat) to Honey Harbour. You can see the stark contrast of where the shield begins. Beasealie (sp.?) Island is also an excellent adventure. While at Honey Harbor try the Delawana Inn for lunch or dinner. (their web site is www.delawana.com) If you are driving, on the road in, there is (was) a small restaurant on the left side of the road that features fresh Georgian Bay Pickerel. (Walleye) It is excellent. If you are boating over, be sure to stop at Pic Nic island for an ice cream cone on the dock. A great place to sit and watch the boats go by.
While in Pentang (as the locals call it) be sure to try "world famous Dock Lunch." Very good burgers, fries etc. Also if you get a chance, drive down the road to the town of Elmvale. Go to the bakery and try what they call "Chelsee bun." What a treat. Since you are there, proceed along highway 92 to Wasaga Beach. It's different. (they claim it is the largest fresh water beach in the world.) There used to be a German restaurant on Mosley street that was very good. Finally, there are a large number of resorts around this area that have a huge following so I suspect if you ask around, you will find some good places.
Be sure to report back. Good Luck! Bronx Mike
