I lived in Ottawa last year, and I fell in love with Kettleman's bagels. When I was back a few weeks ago, there was a sign up saying that they were going to open stores in Montreal and Toronto. Does anyone know if that's happening, and if not, where can I find bagels of equivalent quality in Toronto?

For the best bagels in Toronto:#1="Bagel World"-(Wilson+ Bathurst) They're best when they are hot out of the oven-the scrambled eggs there are a real treat! The twisters at Bagel World are wonderful. For soft bagels, try Gryfe's. Available at Daiters-(north-Bathurst+Wilson Avenue) Montreal-the bagels there are quite different-more sweet, made in a different way..in Outremount area-there is a famous and legendary bagel bakery-can't recall the name..Deli-Yitzes still a cut above the rest. Oh for a good ol'fashioned Montreal Smoked Meat Sandwitch!!

Sorry for this very late message.... I was just searching to see if Kettleman's had a web site. Just came back from Ottawa with a bag!!!

I buy the next closest thing at Bruno's. They are a little smaller but still closer to Montreal-style as you can get.

The one thing I like about Kettleman's is the real fire! Especially on a cold day.

the bagels at Summerhill Market, not the Gryffes, but the Summerhill bagels are pretty close to Montreal bagels. Chewy, a little sweet, ersatz shaped. not fluffy. yum

More on Best Bagels:in Ottawa,at the Byward Market:"Continental Bagel". They are made like the bagels in Montreal. They are worth the trip. The cream cheese there is also very good. Another ok place for bagels in Ottawa "Bagel-Bagel". There used to be a good bagel shop in Kingston, long gone now. Bagel World still has some of the best bagels in Toronto.

I would stay away from Continental Bagel Co in the Market and on Bank. When I worked for them briefly last summer they pushed back expiry dates on cream cheese two weeks and sold the regular cream cheese as lite cream cheese. (lite is four times more expensive than reg) The expiry date issue wasn't just some of the time, it was all of the time, standard practise specifically instructed by the owners. Notice how they have their own labels on the containers? They do make awesome bagels, but I always wondered what else the owners/bakers were cutting corners on.

Yeah, I worked for Continental Bagel in Ottawa too. They do that with the cream cheese for sure. If an expiry date was for say April 30, we were told to add on 14 days to that. As well, they were made with "fresh" ingredients such as green onions. After about a week the onion would turn a brown color but still it stayed in the cream cheese fridge. And if you do eat there, NEVER order a tuna or salmon salad bagel sandwich - I won't even tell you about that - YUCK!!! The day old bagel shelf.....STAY AWAY!!!!!! They are NOT day olds........more like WEEK olds......note the numbers on the packages. 1 = sunday, 2= monday etc. etc. If you buy a pkg on Monday and there's a number 4 on it, then actually the bagels were baked and bagged on the previous Thursday, making them in fact 4 days old. And watch for mould on them!!!! Its hard to see on some types and they WILL NOT refund your money. Oh yeah, and tomatoes stay on top of the counter, ALL DAY in the sweltering heat from the oven (10x worse in the summer), and they use them for 2 days. Ex: if cut on a Friday morning, then they may not get thrown away until Sunday morning. SOGGY!!!
There's a lot more I could write but I'll stop there....just be warned that the place on Bank and in the Byward Market are awful and its best to stay away! Btw, all 3 owners used to work @ Kettleman's (including 2 of their bakers)and "stole", "copied" their recipe. So in fact the bagels are VERY similar. My advice, stick to Kettleman's...its much safer :)

Does anyone know whether/how it might be possible to order Montreal Bagels (or the same type from another city) to have them shipped to the U.S.? I'd love to find a way to get them here in the States.

Thanks.

I do not know the answer to your question, but, am trying to find out myself. If anyone emails you back, could you please email me and let me know, also. Thank you so much. Montreal bagels are so much better that U.S. bagels, aren't they? And, so is the cream cheese. Have you had that? Thanks again.
