Hi - I am throwing a birthday party this weekend, and I'd like to go for Polish food on Roncesvalles. I've heard great things about both Staropolska and Cafe Polonez, but I thought I'd see if any chowhounds have an opinion on which is better. So tell me - who wins?

I rarely go to Cafe Polonez, because they make "deadly" Potato Pancakes.
They are always crisp, and have almost no filler, just real grated potato.
I like their Perogi as well, and the onions fried in oil that accompany's them.(just had the meat perogi last week).
You can gain weight just looking at their food.
Their soups are also excellent.
The food is heavy but very satisfying.
I have also eaten at Staropolska, and do prefer Polonez

Just a co-incidence, just after I replied to your inquiry,
one of my staff brought me an organic breaded chicken breast from Polonez for lunch.(very large schnitzel, but thicker),
I wasn't even aware that they now use organic chicken, a real plus.
It was very good, and cooked perectly.
It was accompanied by sort of a smashed potato, great red cabbage, homemade coleslaw, and fresh (if slightly overcooked carrots).

Polonez all the way. Everything is homemade. When Lech Walesa came to Toronto, that's where he ate.

I went with former co-workers who have never been to a Polish restaurant and they loved it. Just this weekend I went with a friend who came from Calgary and insisted that we go to Polonez for dinner. We had a great meal. I have been to most if not all the Polish restaurants in the GTA and in my opinion Polonez offers the best food, service and atmosphere, plus it's very clean and they are always willing to accept special requests. If you are a vegan or a vegetarian, they will come up with something for you. One of my friends is a vegan, so they made a whole meal just for him, which he loved because not too many restaurants are as accommodating. It's one of my favourite restaurants in Toronto.
