Just got back from a business trip to Vancouver where I had the pleasure of trying Izakaya for the first time (Hapa Izakaya on Lower Robson).

I don't eat seafood/sushi, so I had never sought any Japanese restaurants in Toronto other than the steakhouses with the grill in the middle of the table.

From this board, I've seen recommendations for Izakaya on Church (not good apparently) and at Sakawaya on Danforth (quite good apparently).

Surely in this cultural melting pot there must be more?

not like the ones in vancouver.

too bad you didn't get to try Shiru-Bay Chopstick Cafe in Yaletown while in Vancouver. that one in my opinion is tastier than Hapa Izakaya. Also, the Guu in Gastown is really good.

but alas there's nothing of those sorts here in Toronto. they're trying, but it's not quite the same. *sigh*

The Izakaya on 69 Front Street is TERRIBLE. I feel sorry for anyone who things this is in any way authentic or tasty. You could go to almost any other Japanese restaurant and find better noodles. I went there last month with my girlfriend and we both had to eat pizza after because the portions were so small at Izakaya. 1 out of 10.
