      1. re: qwerty

thank you very much for your reply
unfortunately, i'm hardly ever in the bloor and christie area
does anyone know of a place that sells rennet tablets or liquid rennet around the yonge and lawrence area?

        1. re: j6p

Not really a hotbed of home cheesemaking

    2. I don't think you will find anyone in Toronto that sells rennet, believe me I've tried. The only thing you can get is junket rennet and it doesn't work.

You can However order all cheesemaking supplies including all forms of rennet easily from The New England cheesemaking Company. Its very fast and easy. I got all of the supplies I needed.

      www.cheesemaking.com

I know it isn't exactly what you were looking for but it's the next best thing.

      good luck

I too am looking for a source..Does anybody know if there is rennet available, more widely, in Toronto? Thanks..

        1. re: pat

did you pay a duty tax? Because I am about to go this direction, because its the easy way to get what you need.

        2. Junket, available almost everywhere, would probably work. However, I have no idea how much you would need to use.

          1. I did a quick google search and found this from www.foodsci.uoguelph.ca/dairyedu/chee...: "Freeze dried cultures and rennet in tablet form are available in large orders from Chr. Hansens Laboratories Ltd., 1146 Aerowood Drive, Mississauga, L4N 1Y5, 905-625-8157, and from Rhodia Canada Inc., 2000 Argentia Road, Plaza 3, Suite 400, Mississauga, Ontario, L5N 1V9, Phone 905-821-4450, Fax 905-821-9339. Call and ask about retail distributors closest to you"
There were several other Canadian locations as well as the New England source.
I'm assuming you've been reading "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle"! Loved it myself.

            1. Hello! I just visited CHR Hansen Inc today..20 03 2008. They have moved to Barrie Ontario. 20 Ann St. Suite #8 Barrie Ontario L4N 2C6 Tel: 1 705 792 4006

You have to ask at the cheese counter and the nice lady pours you some from her stash.

                1. I just bought junket rennet tablets at No Frills in the baking aisle.

Glengarry Cheesemaking, outside of Ottawa likely has anything you would want, and has a mail order service.

Thanks, but I asked them about a year ago -- they'd sell me a gallon or so of the stuff, enough for my cheese and my kids cheese into the next century!!!

They couldn't send me anything smaller...

                          1. re: Dean Tudor

I think cheesemaking.com is still a good bet, I had a good experience ordering from them a while ago.
A quick Google search also turned up a Canadian site, makecheese.ca looks like they're in Alberta.

Thanks -- I did find some Junket Rennet at Loblaw (Maple Leaf Garden), so will try it this weekend...

Really? I buy from Glengarry frequently, and have bought the 60mL bottle several times. They have wonderful service.

They sell liquid rennet and rennet tablets.. calves rennet & vegetarian.
                            for example: Liquid Calf Rennet - 50ml - $11.15

                          3. To anyone frequenting Bruce County: the general store in the hamlet of Holyrood sells vegetable rennet. I bought this small bottle 2 years ago and still use it. Cost was $10.25 and I believe it's about 125ml. I seem to recall that meat curing salts were also available.

Holyrood General Store is a great little place - small, crowded, cluttered and catering to the Amish and rural community a few miles from a town of any size. There are excellent same-day veggies and eggs nearby as well.
