Been wanting to try this place for awhile now. Great burgers. So juicy. Had mine with cheese and the house BBQ sauce. Now that it's summer weather, check out the patio!

I think it's better than the often quoted cali burgers (in & out, fatburger).

Way over seasoned(garlic)!! If you eat it at lunchtime you still taste it by dinner. Place is filthy-fries are of the frozen variety and drinks only come from the fountain. That said-when hungry, it still beats the fast food options.

Rob, I think people like it because, as you said, it IS better than the various fast food places. I think you are being a little unfair about the comments with respect to the fountain drinks. Think of it as an (liquor licensed) alternative to the Wendy's, Harvey's, etc., not as some gourmet haunt...it's completely unpretentious.

The fries are not great, I'll agree, but I don't think the place was dirty, at least during my few visits. Garlic, yes, is an acquired taste in access, and I guess I've acquired it. The one thing I will say is that the staff gets on my nerves a bit, especially that one guy, I think he's the too-talkative.

i disagree, the fries are not frozen (unless something recently changed) -they're my favorite fries in the city! One time, my kids found a half potato mixed in with their fries - it showed that they obviously cut up their own potatoes.

I guess everyone has their own taste, but I find Goldenstar my favorite of all those kind of burger joints. Lick's burgers are also good, but their fries are the awful, frozen kind :(
To me, Goldenstar is like Lick's was when they first opened and just had the one location in the Beaches.

ok you might not like it but some of your arguments are really invalid.

fries - they're not frozen last time I checked. I usually don't even get them because the combo is too filling. I just get the homemade burger.

cleanliness - I've never seen that place filthy. Yes the decor is very dated (check that blue jays calender/clock thingy), but it's far from dirty. Everytime I've sat down the tables and chairs have been very clean.

drinks from the fountain - ummm dude, this is an old school burger joint, not a fancy cali wrap pita place w/ energy drinks. I don't walk into mcdonalds complaining about the lack of a wine list.

I like how people love to trash places, but never really list any alternatives. I would certainly love to try your suggestions to a good burger.

ps: I love garlic, so what do I know?

Aser,

First of all dude..the walls, floor and ceiling are filthy. Maybe the tables are clean but everything else ain't. Secondly, I'm not looking to have a red bull with my burger-just a good old fashiioned can or bottle of coke. I personally don't like fountain pop-sue me. Thirdly-I too like garlic-however not when it's overused to the point of tasting it all day. Other options-Burger Shack at Oriole and Eglinton-decent homemade burgers and great fries (also good chicken souvlakis and greek salads) I find Licks and Grouchos also a little heavy in the garlic. Bottom line-it's hard to beat the tast and convenience of a home-grilled burger on your own BBQ. When I go out to eat I try to have things I can't prepare as easily or as well. But with fresh ground beef, a little salt and pepper-what could be easier!!

I'm indifferent about GOlden Star, which is not to say that I don't enjoy their burgers. I've never had a "bad" burger there, but I have never had a spectacular one either. It's a nice inexpensive diversion.

Dirty? Perhaps a bit dated decor. The counters are always clean, the floors in the kitchen are clean looking, the washrooms are pretty clean, the cooking area appears pretty clean. So which part did you find unclean? Old and faded doesn't mean it's dirty.

Frozen fries? The server there told me they cut it themselves, and from the shape of them they look pretty hand cut to me (i.e. extruded through those french fry cutters). Certainly not McCain's type of frozen..... while sometimes they don't taste the greatest, I'm guessing it's a combination of ill-timing of cooking or the oil getting old, which is inevitable unless they change oils every 12 hours.

Despite its occasional shortcomings, I still enjoy the occasional meal there. Ya, Bymark's may have a tastier burger but I don't feel like driving all the way downtown, paying $5 for parking, then paying $30 for a burger very often. But then again, it doesn't compare to DB's burger in NYC......

You liked the DB burger? I was hugely disappointed. It turned out to be my last meal in NYC and it was horrible. I would much rather have the burger at Les Halles instead. Its the best I've ever had.
