What happened to Elizabeth's Meat and Delicatessen?

I enjoyed that store, Elizabeth's Meat and Delicatessen at Bloor and Brunswick, but now it's closed up. Anyone know what happened?

Indeed. What's the scoop? Has this former purveyor of fine meat products and Euro-delicacies gone under, relocated, been bought out? Have they gone out for business or have they gone out of business? Rumbling bellies want to know.

I live above the deli. The husband of the couple that owned the place passed on last year and the wife has been struggling. The deli owed too much back rent and they just took off one day leaving behind most of their stuff - they are definitely not coming back.

Sniff. I have a lot of fond memories of the meats and the chocolate

          ...sad news indeed...
.speaking strictly for myself, i think its unfair and unnatural for a glutton to outlive one of his favourite grocers!
.the place was always extremely busy...i guess the motto is, if you find something really good, eat faster!

          That's sad.

I noticed their booth in the St Lawrence had closed some time ago. My husband walked by the Bloor location and told me that a notice posted there talked about substantial amouts of back rent being owed. Pity, I loved their roasted ham.

There is St. Clair Delicatessen (west of Christie) and Honey Bear on Sheppard East between Bayview and Yonge) if you are looking for hungarian and/or european chocolate, deli, home made sausage etc. Both places are much cheaper than Elizabeth was. I've stopped going to Elizabeth years ago.
