What's with that restaurant Mammina's being in the news for having a (low?) $10 corking fee for wine? Their whole schtick was - before this BYOW thing - having a $5 mark-up on their wine list. They act like they're doing everyone a favour, but they are in fact making an extra $5 off of every bottle that people bring into their establishment AND they're not having to buy and/or store the wine! Thanks guys!!

I am not clear why you are jumping on Mammina's. They have a $5 markup on their wines and a $10 corkage on BYOW. Why is this noteworthy compared to a restaurant that may have a $30+ markup and a $25 corkage. I still think Mammina's is a good deal - drink their wine and pay just $5.

I used to go there, thinking the $5 mark-up was a good deal, and it is...but their food is was overpriced, so the cheap wine isn't so cheap in the end. Which is basically what we've been talking about with the whole concept of BYOW. You've got to make your money somewhere.

I've read about the owners of the place now talking about what a good thing they're doing, only charging a $10 corking fee...whatever. They're still making $5 more per bottle & not having to buy/store the wine. Good samaritans? No. Business men? Perhaps. Welcome to the city of Toronto!
