Matagali or Sidhartha?
I'm deciding on which of these two indian restaurants to go to.
I've heard only good things about Matagali but i have also heard a lot of good AND bad things about Sidhartha
what do you guys think?
I'm thinking of trying the Sidhartha at Yonge and Eglinton. Is it any good? or should i save my money to try Matagali?
and is Sidhartha only buffet? or is the buffet only at lunch time?

Without question, Matagali. The food is much better than Siddartha, though Siddartha does have one of the better buffets on Gerrard. Unfortunately this also makes it crowded and impersonal.
I have eaten at Matagai a few times and they just try harder. The vindaloo is among the best i've ever had and the service is friendly and personal. They have also given me tips in the past on where to find other unusual dishes I was looking for around town, and are very knowledgeable about food from both India and SE Asia.
I had Thai there once, and quite enjoyed it, though I am not an expert on Thai.

re: Viola
yes i believe the sidhartha at yonge and eglinton is their new location
so what other indian restaurants would u recommend?
i know there's one around yonge and wellesley. I think it used to be at yonge and bloor but the owner sold it to one of his cooks and opened a new one at wellesley
forgot what it was called....heard it was pretty good though
how about nataraj? or kama?-
re: aznpoon
The Indian resto at Yonge and Wellesley (across the street from the subway station entrance) is Biryani House.
Beautiful service and delicious food. The samosas are a must--not greasy at all.
The only other places that I have really enjoyed are The Host in Richmond Hill, Udupi Palace, and Cuisine of India in North York. -
re: aznpoon
Never went back to Kama after one visit - generally disappointing.
However, nearly always have to line-up at Nataraj - there's a reason. And it has dishes cooked in cashew paste - not often found in Toronto.
And yet another option: Trimurti on Queen, west of University. Similar menu to Nataraj and fewer line-ups. -
re: aznpoon
Sidhartha at Y&E is pretty good. The service is quick and courteous. PRices are reasonable.
The naan is excellent, very light and fluffy. I usually stick to milder indian dishes such as chicken Korma and butter chicken and both versions I've had there were excellent. The Aloo gobi was delicious as well.
The mango lassis and chai tea were good as well.
I've never been to the other location on Gerrard, so can't compare.

I haven't been to Matagali but I do frequent Sidhartha on Gerrard. The buffet is OK but ordering from the menu makes a world of difference -higher quality of meat, better veg. Tell you what, why not skip them both and go to Kama Sutra at Bayview and Davisville -its one the best around, the service is great, and the portions bigger than any Indian restaurant in Toronto. My $.02....good luck.....

Kama Sutra reminds me of an 'English Indian' restaurant.
All the money went into the surroundings and the food is secondary.
No defined flavours - my suspicion is that they have a few basic sauces then add the various meats (or whatever) at the end, as the meat flavour seems separate from the dish. (PS I don't have a problem with long-simmering of sauces per se, but here it appears to be meat with the sauce poured over, rather than simmered together).
