cherries jubilee at Tom Jones
Last night my boyfriend and i wandered into Tom Jones Steakhouse & Seafood (17 Leader Lane). Attracted to the "after ten piano music", we unknowingly entered a dark windowless room with a motley group of characters sitting around the piano. The decor was imposing and crude at times, but only enough to accentuate that the focus here is on top quality service and food. There is not a hint of trendiness at this restaurant that opened in 1966.
At first we were a bit uncomfortable about what we'd stepped into. Tom Jones has the most extensive wine list I've ever set eyes on, being a whole book. And the prices were not what we had planned at average $15 for an appetizer and $10 for french onion soup. I was attracted to the Fondue for two ($50-$95), but we hadn't come for a big meal. We decided on Cherries Jubilee Flambe for two. This was a quirky and memorable experience we stumbled into, and i think i have discovered my second favorite dessert (behind creme brulee). Our server prepared the cherries beside our table by sauteeing them in brandy, lemon and Kirsch and then lighting them on fire. The warm soup was then poured onto what i think was Vanilla ice cream, but it tasted so much better! This is my best description of a dish i was previously unfamiliar with. With an espresso, and tea our bill came to 28-something before tip. And the pianist played our Tom Waits request. I highly reccomend this restaurant for a memorable experience and a meal you want to linger over with good friends.
