Is there any store in Seattle that has a good selection of cheese? I'm sure one can get a decent cheese plate in a restaurant, but....I'm gonna be there all next week ; last time I was in Seattle the best I could find was supermarket prepackaged and not very interesting stuff. I hope some Seattle chowhound can steer me to a good cheese store, so I can pig out at home. Thanks.

I'm no cheese buff, but Larry's (large and rather yuppie) Supermarket in Queen Anne seems to have a rather huge assortment. It's one block North of Seattle Centre (Space Needle); about 18 blocks from downtown. 10 mins by bus; 20-30 mins walk.

There are other branches, but I assume you'll be near downtown?

The place where I bought my cheese many years ago was a cheese shop in University Village, but I've not been successful in locating its address on the web, and fear that it may have gone out of business. There are several cheese shops in the Pike Place Market, perhaps the best of which is DiLaurenti's at the corner of 1st and Pike. But, ironically, as Jim Wong suggested in the previous post, the best cheese selections in Seattle may be at supermarkets. The Seattle area has some truly amazing "supermarkets." For cheese, even better than Larry's are the Admiral Thriftway at Admiral Way and 42nd in West Seattle and the Queen Anne Thriftway in Seattle. I recall reading several years ago that Julia Child bought her cheese from the Queen Anne Thrifway when she was in Seattle. There is much more to be said about the amazing "supermarkets" of the Seattle area, but I'll wait until later to say it.

Talk me through it, and I'll try to find it for you! I'm up there a lot.

I really like this Larry's, but now I'm gonna go have a look at Thriftway that you mentioned. (I had figured that was just another Safeway.)

Aside from impressing me in certain yuppie aspects, though, the one thing that impresses me about Seattle's supermarkets is how **SMALL** they are. Larry's is the biggest I've found yet, but it's like 1/4 the size of a typical Ralph's or Von's back home.

Of course, I am near Queen Anne. Perhaps if I could get out to the *suburbs*.... I reckon Fred Meyer's must be HUMONGOUS, given how many flyers they stick in the Sunday paper (minimum of FOUR booklets).

I'll second Tom's recommendation of DiLaurenti's in the Pike Place Market...they do quite a bit volume, so the younger cheeses are still very fresh.

Thanks, all. The problem with Larry's is that the cheeses all seem unripe. My recollection of DeLaurentis is that their cheeses are mostly Italian. I found a place called Cook's, on 2nd St in Belltown....as was said in another context, there's not much there, but what there is, is cherce.

by far the best selections of cheeses can be had at James Cook Cheese Co at 2421 2nd Ave and DeLaurenti's. Ask Mr. Cook himself for samples of his amazing white cheddar---stellar.

Here's a suprise: The Greenlake PCC (on Aurora Ave. N) has a small but very nice selection of French, Swiss, and Dutch cheeses. The cheese person seems to know her stuff, with cheeses kept in excellent condition. I like the French brebis (sheep's milk) varieties, and the Swiss Marechal, in particular.

There is a wonderful cheese store/deli near the University Village on 35th called the Wedge. Perhaps this is the one you were thinking of in the Village. I've never known of a cheese shop in the Village itself, but The Wedge is just a few blocks east.

There is also Brie & Bordeaux in the Greenlake area that has a wonderful selction as well. It's more of a bistro if memory recalls correctly though.

Plenty of cheese to be had in Seattle, fear not. As the other posters have mentioned, Queen Anne Thriftway will also have plenty to choose from.

Brie & Bordeaux (on 56th near Meridian in Green Lake) has an excellent selection of cheeses and great wines. It's not a huge cheese selection, but what they have is very, very good! They had a luscious double Gloucester that knocked my sox off!

It's also a Bistro, but I haven't eaten there.

As well as the several other good locations metioned, there is a new shop on Ballard Ave. near the corner of Ballard & Market in Ballard. (It is across the street from the Sunset Tavern at 5433 Ballard NW.) I am not sure of the name but they only have Cheese & Wine- either for eating onsite or taking home. They have a wonderful selection of both and a great atmosphere.
