Are heirloom tomatoes in the markets yet? Specifically, has anyone seen an quality specimens at the St. Lawrence Market lately? Other suggestions would of course be very much appreciated.

Much thanks,
Jeff

I don't think I've ever seen them at St Lawrence Market, and I shop there every Saturday (albeit late in the morning).

Pusateri's had them last summer, but I don't know if they have any yet (they'd obviously have to be imported or hot house).

That figures. The one vegetable store at the market I never go to. One gets in a rut.

Hmm, unless "those pretty little ones with the two-toned green zebra stripes" is a variety, I'm afraid I can't tell you. I enjoy the taste and aesthetics of heirloom tomatoes but I'm no afficionado. They had the mid-sized green ones and a few different types of larger ones - one kind was banana pepper yellow, another was a deep greenish red and the other looked like a large ripening red tomato. Hope that helps!

BTW, if you want to grow your own, Humber Nurseries, on hwy 50 just south of hwy 7 (just west of the 427) is a good source of heirloom tomato plants. They had 7 or 8 varieties a few weeks ago - I'm growing red and yellow Brandywines this year. I also bought a good book on heirloom tomatoes there last year. It list the appearance, taste, growing conditions, etc., for the author's 100 favourite varieties of heirloom tomatoes (she claims to have grown over 1200 varieties). See the link below.

There was also someone selling many varieties of heirloom tomato seeds at Canada Blooms in March. My wife bought me some Cherokee Purple to try this year. I know they're good because I bought a couple at Pusateri's last summer.

The Avenue Road Food Market (Avenue Road north of Davenport) had a couple varieties of plants availble last weekend. I'm sure they at least had yellow pear and green zebra plants.
