Eek! -- Niagara Falls!

So the wife and I are thinking of going to Niagara Falls next weekend sans the beloved 2 and a half year old.

Anyone have any recommendations for the Falls area?

I'll do the drive to a winery restaurant rather than put up with those Hard Planet Hollywood Rock-type places.

But is there anything in town?

  1. I can't in good conscience suggest anything in town. As far as winery restaurants are concerned, my favourites (based on many meals) are:

    1. Vineland Estates
    2. Penninsula Ridge
    3. Hillebrand

      1. Peller is really good, never been disappointed there. Hillebrand is usually pretty good and On The Twenty has it's ups and downs.

            I hear there is a quality spot on Highway 55 near Virgil. Do you know what the name might be?

          2. Well I found a place *in* Niagara Falls. I don't usually go to Italian restaurants. I can cook Italian just as well at home so it's not worth the money to me. But I'd heard this place was good. and I didn't feel like dining at Applebee's.

            This place was very good. We had a nicely done smoked salmon appetizer plate. The salmon was rolled, stuffed with an arugula salad and presented on a rosti (that could have been crisper). The plate was dotted with wasabi caviar -- very interesting. All of their pastas are homemade. We had a fettucine al funghi. Nicely done, with three kinds of mushrooms. But the outstanding dish was Duck Confit served over fresh egg linguine. The duck was tender. The dish was decadent, floating atop a pool of fat from the confit. Delicious. Went very well with an aggresive chardonnay. The wine list is good -- heavy on pricey Italian reds but a good Canadian selection and choices for all budgets available. Fridays and Saturdays they have a jazz trio. Great decor. Most tables feel quite intimate. Good service. And they'll pay your taxi chit to and from your hotel.

            A real find for Niagara falls.

            Mind you, whether I'd go to Niagara Falls again for a getaway is another story. Been there. Done that. Had the shower afterwards...
