I'm making my virgin voyage to Toronto this weekend and I must admit I don't know much at all about the your lovely city. I'll be severely time limited and need to know if there's any great, can't miss places to eat within walking distance of the Horseshoe Tavern.

Also are there any foods indigenous to Toronto that I shouldn't miss while I'm there?

Thanks!

Senses is about a three-block walk from the Horseshoe, and is reputedly one of the best in town right now: www.senses.ca

There's a French bistro on Queen Street between University and Spadina called Le Select, which has been around for years, still gets great reviews, and has a terrific wine list: www.leselect.com

I would say that my favourite "Toronto" food is either a backbacon on a bun or a frittata sandwich at the St. Lawrence Market.

For cheap eats,

A 15 minute walk west on Queen, towards Bathurst St, will bring you to Ghandi's. Where many people recommend the Butter Chicken Roti and then a little further on is New York Sub where I'm a big fan of the jumbo lamb satay roll.

There are a few Indian restaurants to the east of the Shoe, on the other side of Queen.

Second both these places for no-nonsense tasty and very reasonably priced food (although I upgrade to the lamb, rather than the lamb satay - more meat!).
These are eatin' (not dining) places.

From the Horseshoe, go west to Spadina and south to Richmond (1 block), to the west a few stores is Rassoe Indian Kitchen. I find the food here fresher than Ghandi on Queen. Try the combo plate, you can choose any 3 dishes on the menu (I love the butter chicken).
