Where to go for the best Ramen noodles in Calgary

Oh dear. Are they considered good? I didn't like them at all the few times I went. Noodles are too soft and thin, broth was not strong enough.

LA Ramen places really spoiled me, I guess.

Garlic gets planted in fall, not now, unless you want scapes, I suppose.

You can get garlic for growing at any of the garden centres in town or at Home Depot, Rona, etc.

Inexpensive wine recommendations

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions....

We went with what we knew..
Apothic ($11 vs $17 in BC), Santa Margherita ($12 vs $20 in BC) and Luigi Bosca ($12 vs $18 in BC)

Also, for the record single malt scotches were significantly cheaper in Alberta. We saved, on average, $25 per bottle.

On our $850 booze run to Alberta we saved $450.

Khao San Thai kitchen YYC

I've only eaten at 3 Thai restaurants in Calgary, and Khao San was the best by far. Decor and presentation was amazing. The spring rolls and papaya salad were heavenly, and the curry was good. Not as flavourful as White Elephant, but the rest of the meal surpassed WE by far.
Service, Decor, Presentation were all 9.5, food was a solid 9.
Better than White Elephant, and miles above Ruan Thai.

best pizza in calgary?

Definitely my favourite place to eat in the belt line. Pizza is always fresh, they have delicious and exotic flavours, thin crust, and the only meat they serve is pork. I would recommend this place to everyone, and I do!

Where to get white charcoal (binchotan) in Alberta?

I asked the chef at my sushi place and he said he had never seen it for sale in Calgary and he has been here for about 20 years.
He did mention that there was a yakitori restaurant in Vancouver that used it http://www.zakkushi.com/ and that they imported from Japan. Maybe if you contacted them they could hook you up with a source.

There is a new cafe/restaurant opened this month. 107th street & jasper ave. it's called
Arabia. Probably the best Arabic "from scratch" food, salads are fresh, hot grill food is made right in front of you-so u see it is also fresh and the place is SUPER CLEAN!

Falafel in Calgary

Thanks, have to try out some of these other falafel places. A couple of months ago in another city I had two excellent falafels from different restaurants. At both, the patties were fried to order. Apart from good toppings and assembly, frying the patties to order does seem to be very important, with superior results to having them pre-made and sitting under heat lamps. I don’t mind standing around for a few minutes while they fry. One of the places also had interesting varietal patties with toppings to match. Salma Hage’s recent book “The Lebanese Kitchen” has 7 different varieties of falafel patties. So things are moving along in the falafel world.

kid friendly restaurant in Banff

I agree with the others here that pretty much every restaurant is kid-friendly. We have a two year old and have been very warmly welcomed everywhere we have gone.

Both the Elk & Oarsman (pub) and the Juniper Bistro (mid range, with beautiful views of the valley) have kids menus as well as crayons and colouring pages. Suginoya Japanese Restaurant was also great. I don't know if they have crayons (I actually brought my own that time!), but they had lots of colourful plastic cups and plates for my daughter to share our adult meals.

Went for brunch recently and was very pleased. The short rib was hearty but not greasy and I love the cure on the salmon! The only thing I would have liked is more yolk on the short ribs and more pieces of salmon, because I'm greedy that way.

I tried the ricotta fritters too - peppery and savory. And the maple syrup wasn't too sweet, which made it perfect.

The easiest way to get to Edelweiss is to actually walk through the Banff Trail train station, cross the tracks, and go into the Banff Trail neighborhood. Go to 20th Ave and walk East. It's about 4 blocks or so.

Really? Are we talking about the same place?
My only "complaint" was that ambience was maybe a little too casual....very subjective, I know. However, as noted, the food really was excellent! The wine list was maybe limited.....we went with a familiar zinfandel that we had had several times previously. Not spectacular but reliably good.

Doh, sorry--spent so much time catching up that somehow I read Italian Store and thought Lina's... even better that the Italian Store saw some renos-the restaurant side used to look kind of neglected-it was always vacant whenever I visited.

I'm a 10 minute drive from Sylvan Star's HQ but they don't do their own ricotta or mozzarella so thanks-I'll have to check them out next time we're in Calgary. =)
