Casual dinner in Lake Louise

Hi all,

My boyfriend and I will be in the Rockies late June. We'll be staying in Banff and will not have a car. Our plan is to take the Greyhound bus to Lake Louise on the 25th and hike for the day, then take the 8 p.m. Greyhound back to Banff. That leaves us one dinner in Lake Louise. I have no idea what the dining options are. We don't need anything fancy (we're having a nice dinner the night before) and will be in our hiking clothes anyway. I'm generally up for anything but my boyfriend is a less adventurous eater. I would be happy with anything good/decent and affordable.

Suggestions? Places to absolutely avoid? Thanks!

Wiener Schnitzel House - Bowness Rd NW

I thought I would add a recent review, as we just ate here on the weekend. The food was fantastic. Normally we eat at the Austrian Club in the NE but I would say I like this better. The atmosphere is much nicer too.

We had Jager schnitzel (a creamy mushroom/sherry sauce), Wiener schnitzel and the ‘Parisian’ schnitzel which was stuffed with brie and pears. The menu is divided into grilled schnitzel and breaded schnitzel. The breaded schnitzels are served with Austrian salad or fries. You could ‘upgrade’ to spatzle for an extra $4. We all wanted spatzle so we didn’t have a chance to try the salad or fries. The spatzle was pan fried with butter and parsley, it was very enjoyable and the serving sizes were quite substantial. We ended the meal with their popular apple strudel with vanilla sauce. The strudel itself was light and delicious. But the vanilla sauce fell short; it was very thin and tasted like lemon.

The service was quite slow. I would think it would make good business sense to turn over tables as quickly as possible, when you only have 10 tables but they were in no rush. It took quite a while to even get an order in for drinks. We sat after our coffee and desserts were done for at least 15 minutes until we finally had to ask for our bill. I would consider it more of a ‘European’ style of service – slow and leisurely. But they were friendly, chatty and helpful explaining the menu so we weren’t bothered much by the slow pace. We will return again for sure.

Here in Edmonton many think that Spolumbo's sausages are very good. It calls my attention that it has not been mentioned yet.

But when it comes to italian style sausage, nothing beats the "original recipe" from Edmonton's Italian Centre (aka Spinellis's) A similar one is also sold commercially branded as Adrianna's .
Amazing taste and texture for a fairly low fat pork sausage.

We just went to Wlid Wings at 1129 17th Ave SW, Calgary.

Pricey but very good wings, they were nice and meaty and you could tell they came off a chicken, a large variety of flavours and the kids wanted more lava cake after pretending to be full of fries, sweet potato fries, wings and carrots/celery. Be warned I think the sweet potato fries are McCain's though they were pretty good crispy with a sweet tangy sauce I couldn't decide if I liked or not but kept dipping into.

It had a sports bar feel but the kids were welcomed.

Looking to do a quick getaway this weekend for Mothers Day in Banff. The Rimrock is offering a Mothers Day Brunch on Sunday. We have done brunch at Banff Springs many times (and love it) but wouldn't mind a change. Has anyone tried the brunch at the Rimrock before? Is it a regular weekly thing, or just something they offer for special occaisons, is if comparable to Banff Springs in selection and quality?

Guanciale

The problem with Guanciale's availability is that the major meat distributors don't carry it or produce it because of the relative non-demand for the product. As it becomes more of an in demand item for chefs to use on their menu's, the meat suppliers will no doubt begin to list it. As it stands right now, there are strict federal laws governing the production of some products. Certain cuts of pork and beef, specifically specialty and offal products, as well as cuts that are close to the spine and brains of the animals simply are not produced in facilities that are federally inspected. There are some meat specialty suppliers who theoretically could carry and/or produce guanciale, because they are only subjected to Provincial inspection, but this of course comes back to the issue of demand for this relatively niche product.I do know however of no less than 4 restaurants in Calgary who are usung or have recently used guanciale. They are: Divino, Dolce Sapori, Charcut and Bonterra. All of these chefs are approchable individuals who would no doubt be helpful with suggestions. Charcut definitely makes their own guanciale, with the jowls being supplied by either Broek Pork acres or another local, small production pork producer. The others? Not sure....but hopefully this helps your search.

Best Burger in Calgary?

I have done lots of burger research in Calgary in the 3 years I've lived here. I'm moving back to Halifax in a few days, and what happens? Two new burger places open! I'm going to try to get to Smashburger before I go. But here is my research to date:

1) Rocky's Burger Bus - best burger of my life. Very simple, but this is my perfect burger. Big thick and meaty, moisture and flavour sealed in.

2) Boogie's Burgers - My second favourite burger in Calgary. Thinner patties, but all around goodness.

3) 5 Guys - This one is a chain, but it is a very decent burger.

4) Clive Burger - This just opened on 17th Ave. It was really sloppy, but tasty. I liked their Clive sauce. It is a mayo based sauce with some kick.

5) Buchanan's - This is the only pub burger on my list. The platter is $18 available for $10 each day during the happy hour period. Thick juicy burger that you can get cooked rare to well done. The chefs grind the sirloin in house.

6) Alley Burger - Food trucks are over-hyped. The original alley burger was pretty good but I wouldn't order a double again. I enjoy the cheese curd and chimichurri aoili toppings on the pork and garlic sausage patty. But this isn't your conventional hamburger. Based on the composition alone, their regular burger should be awesome but they inexplicably use a frozen pressed patty and it ruins the whole thing.

7) Fatburger - another chain. Decent.

Burgers I avoid:

Peter's Drive-In - Calgarians love this place but it's really underwhelming.

Burger Inn - the guy at the counter told me this was the best burger in Calgary. He then proceeded to take a patty out of the deep freeze and pop it in the microwave before cooking it. Terrible.

I'll let ya'll know how Smashburger is...

2012 Calgary food trucks.

Short:
Grabbed the Steak Bite Fries from the Steakout truck outside of MEC today...meh...Let me know if the prime-rib sandwich is worth checking out, because based on what I had today, I don't think I'd hit this truck up again

Long:
10 bucks got me a take-out tray of fries (actually pretty damn good fries) covered with 6 or 7 chunks of pleasantly seasoned, but otherwise overcooked steak'ums, some shaved parm, and a side of garlic dip that could have very easily come out of a vat via Sysco.

The fries were far-and-away the best part, easily besting the batch I had from Alley Burger Truck last weekend. They were double dipped; soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside and joined by a couple of blackened, but still kinda sweet slivers of deep fried onion (these errant onions may have been a mistake, but they were tasty).

The steak'ums had a nice peppery rub on them and a pleasant crust, but every last one revealed a center that was grey from edge to edge. They weren't too chewy, and certainly weren't overcooked to the point of being tough, just overcooked to the point of making me wish I was eating something a little more rare.

The parm on the fries was nice enough, and the side of dip was improved by the addition of horseradish from one of the squeeze bottles. Apparently they'd had quite a busy day, so the only drink options were Coke Zero, orange juice or apple juice. I decided to pass on a drink.

The truck is new and clean and quite flashy; the graphic wrap matched the can of Coke Zero sitting on the counter. Some of the trucks I've seen immediately give you a sense of "personality", I don't get that with this one. That might be just me. Though I do wonder what came first, the recipes or the name?

* I posted this here, rather than the thread that The Gut linked to because that thread seems to be more focused on the socio-politcal side of the food truck scene thing.

You're on the right track for others to try in Calgary. IMO it's tough to go wrong with any of the following:

Charcut
Divino
Chef's Table (at the Kensington Riverside Inn)
Notable

In Banff, the Grizzly House is certainly a fun experience. Don't wear your nicest clothes there, you come out with them having that cooked meat scent from the fondu. I've also had several good experiences at the Maple Leaf, and have heard good things about the Bison.

Thanks Scary Bill.

I Checked out Wonderful Food Store this weekend and was able to pick up a nice big jar of kimchi, a couple of interesting looking chili pastes and some lovely long onions. It is TINY, but should be able to keep me in kimchi and chili paste until I can make it up to T&T or Arirang (which is great).

I had actually been down in that stip-mall area a couple months ago investigating reports of an Asian grocery store, but wandered into the Filipino store instead and figured I was out of luck.

I had the bacon cheeseburger, onion rings, rosemary fries, fried pickles and milkshake. Everything was very good especially the milkshake. However the rings, pickles were a tad on the greasy side. I don't think they had enough time to let the excess oil drain.

Better than Clive burger and Five guys IMO.

Italian markets CALGARY

I disagree that the Italian Market is friendly to everyone. After I moved to Calgary- FROM ITALY- I went to the store to buy some things I was missing. I waited patiently at the counter for service as both employees working there engaged in a long personal conversation with two Italian customers. As I'd just moved to Calgary FROM ITALY I understood every word of their personal conversation. I caught the eye of one of the chatting employees, smiled and asked, apologetically, for service. I was ignored and the personal conversation continued. I was a little miffed as I'd been listening to their conversation for at least five minutes, so I asked again in Italian. They looked shocked and helped me right away. As long as they thought they could keep up the charade of helping another customer, they were happy not to help me. As soon as they realized I knew they were just chatting, they offered to help. I don't call that friendly.

A couple of times a year, for the past 6 years, I've always been lucky enough to have order a Tiramisu Cake for someone in my family. I just celebrated a birthday a few days ago and had the chance to have this again this year. Still hasn't let me down. Can be a little costly but WELL worth it. You have to give it a shot.

Finally tried Nando's. It was ok. Did not find it to be better or less expensive than Swiss Chalet. My Dad wanted a coffee refil then changed his mind when the lady told him it would be $2.75. I teasingly asked my wife if she would take him to Tim Horton's? I did enjoy the "garlic peri peri sauce" on the table.

Cristy's Rotisary seems better to me.

Szechuan Steamed Pork Belly @ Szechuan Restaurant - heart attack on a dish, but terrific:
http://www.foodspotting.com/reviews/335256

Definitely try the Ma Po tofu, as well as the Dan Dan Mein (Noodles) and compare to the other places. The Lamb with Cumin is very good at Szechuan.

At Szechuan, the boiled fish is excellent, but really spicy (I think miss.foodie mentions that already in her other post). Get a small serving if it is just a couple of you - the large one serves a whole table.

Olive Chicken - Calgary

After driving by and seeing it several times and reading a handful of reviews, I stopped by with my wife today for lunch. We were both very happy with the decision. We ordered the half-and-half order of chicken so that we could try both the sweet and spicy, and the crispy. Both were completely delicious. As tiny as it is, my ONLY criticism would be that after eating about half-a-dozen pieces of the sweet and spicy chicken, your fingers get VERY sticky with the sauce, it would be great to have wet-naps for eat-in orders.

Other than that one little nitpick, the food was delicious, no complaints! If you want something sweet to finish with, we stopped at the Korean bakery next door and satisfied the sweet tooth with a cinnamon twist.

I avoid CFM at all costs. I also think many of the food vendors can actually pass off a lower quality product for more money, just because they have a somewhat captive market, and folks are under the illusion that they are getting something special jsut because it's at the CFM.

Cibo Bistro

I had dinner at Cibo Bistro this evening. It was a great meal.

To start, we shared the polenta fritta and the pan fried ricotta cakes. The polenta fritta, for lack of a better way to describe it, was really classy junk food. It is essentially crispy polenta fries with a sprig of rosemary served with spicy salami slices and an aioli with rosemary olive oil. It was very enjoyable with polenta that was crispy on the outside and soft and moist on the inside. The salami gave a nice bite. The ricotta cakes were also enjoyable. A drizzle of olive oil on the plate with little browned pillows of soft, fresh ricotta, topped with some shreds of chicken (chicken conduto) and basil tomato jam (to me, it tasted and looks like sundried tomatoes).

For my main, I had the braised beef cheeks, which came with Montepulciano risotto. I also ordered a side of rapini to go with our mains. The beef cheek was nicely browned on the outside and was very tender and juicy, with a bit of a sweet taste to it (the waiter had recommended pairing a less sweet wine with it, which was a good choice) and the risotto was flavourful and moist.

I enjoyed the rapini. As a vegetable side, there isn't a lot I can say, but it tasted good and the toasted pine nuts were a nice additional. The only complaint would be that for the price ($7), it was a fairly small serving.

My dining partner had the beet ravioli, stuffed with goat cheese, and then topped with chives, butter, and pistachios. While at first it may not look like a huge portion due to the number of ravioli served (5?), it was filing due to the richness and size of them. I had a taste of it and would have been happy with it being my main, as well.

For dessert, we split the chocolate trio (dark chocolate tart, hazlenut brittle with white chocolate ice cream, and a Frangelico-milk chocolate mousse with whipping cream). I enjoyed all three, but my least favourite was the white chocolate ice cream. It was pleasant enough, but not particularly distinctive in taste. The brittle that came with it was also more of a candy glass than the brittle with which I am familiar. The mousse was my favourite (creamy, smooth, and a nice flavour).

I will definitely be returning, as there were dishes on the menu I still want to try.
