I don't always eat pho, in fact at least 50% of the time I go for bun (vermicelli) bowls. My fave is grilled pork with cha gio (fried spring rolls) and generally I like Thai Son's the best, followed closely by Thuan An and Pho Tan.

Regardless, I always ask for little or no shredded lettuce and no sprouts in the bowl, just julienned cucumber and carrots (if supplied) with extra vermicelli and chopped peanuts :-D

Never been to Hai Phong ...... I suspect I'll be there soon. That shakes looks delish.

The New and Improved Ba Le (Banh Mi)

Indulged in my favourite banh mi from Ba Le on the weekend: the minced pork was excellent, slightly warmed which was nice. Bread is holding its own. They put hoi sin sauce in both our sandos (SO had the grilled pork) which I think is maybe new. They must go through a lot as they had half a dozen industrial size tins of my preferred brand, Koon Chun.

A new-to-me item was the Vietnamese yogurt in the cold case on the north wall where the drinks and chilled desserts are kept. It was very tasty, not too sweet and with a thick rich consistency that reminded me of quark. $1.75 for maybe 6 oz.

I recommend Brother's Halal Meat and Deli and #5 and Cambie in Richmond. They changed ownership a while back and they now have a great selection. Fresh local lamb chops, $8 / lb (on my BBQ today). Good organic beef, some nice Angus, and they sometimes have some nice seriously aged stuff in the back. I used to bemoan the lack of local butchers but it seems the halal places are taking up the slack and bringing back the local.

Visiting Vancouver/White Rock

There are tons of threads about Vancouver on here but White Rock is actually a hidden gem kind of place with some really great resto's in all price levels. I personally like Pearl Bistro (Formerly Pearl on the Rock) and their sister spot Onyx Steak House. Little pricy but great quality and service anytime I've been there.

Best thing to do though, especially if the weather is good and you have a little time is park down on the beach near the pier and just walk up and down the strip. There are over a dozen small restaurants, pubs and bistros with a variety of cuisines. I think they all have their menus out front so you can just walk by and browse them all and go in to wherever catches your fancy.

Have a great time and let us know how it goes.

Hey thanks Philx, that's the one.

Yelpers seem to all like them. Urbanspooners and the current blogs are a mixed-bag:

The roti canai seems to be an unanimous let-down. This can only mean one thing ......... a personal investigation. Will try to hit City 1 this week and report back next weekend.

Pure Bread 'n The Hood!!

Just picked up a copy of the latest Farmer's Market schedule from Pure Bread deep in Function Junction.

Once again they're poised to break loose and spread their message of bready goodness to a hood near you!

Despite often being found in a milieu notorious for gross overcharging Pure Bread has never seen as expensive as some o other operations-probably because the stuff is So Darned Good.

Anyway if my math is correct (far from a given) they are due for over 160 appearances this season including every market @ Ambleside, Squamish & Whistler as well as the usual suspects and This Just In-cameo appearances in distant Ladner.

I emailed Ethical and they basically said they couldn't keep making them organic for the money they were charging so they opted to stop. The day we went to Little Mountain we tried a number of the other pastries on offer and none were particularly salutary.

I too had a disappointing experience some time back. I went in looking for a post breakfast snack and tried the cheese croissant, i expected something relatively fresh from the oven or kept in some type of warmer but was given the croissant from the counter display case, it must have been atleast 12 hours old, the cheese was solidified and pastry chewy and dense. I really wanted to like this place as it is a fantastic idea. But for almost $3 and a huge let down, i unfortunately will not be giving them another try. I did not see a baking schedule when i was there (perhaps this started afterr my visit) but would have appreciated if the counter person would have advised me to try a fresher variety rather than have me feel i was just another opportuinity to pass off the stale stock.

Shizen Ya in Fairview - Light at the end of a long dark tunnel

Shizen Ya recently opened on West Broadway/Fairview has introduced a bright light of hope in a neighborhood littered with sushi extremes ( a neighborhood which boasts Tojo's but is yet surrounded by a sea of sub par cheap "scary" sushi joints). I have bought a lot of sushi that has made it directly to the trash on the strip from Cambie to Granville...

Shizen Ya boasts healthy, additive free, vegetarian friendly sushi (think brown rice and rolls filled with veggie and greens) yet does not compromise on flavour and does offer fish and meat dishes in addtion to the abundant veggie options. Qualtiy and fresheness are not compromised and the menu items are consistent with the greater care that comes with other moderately priced Japanese run establishments.

Be warned, this is is not a destination joint - unless you are stuck with a pesky vegetarian... and if you are even remotely offended by the idea of brown rice just don't bother...

It is, however, the much needed moderately priced sushi place the neighborhood has been lacking.

Pommery mustard in Vancouver?

It has a sharp, peppery-spicy taste and a great texture and aesthetic. There are a lot of great mustards out there that fit this description, but this one, as I understand it, is a classic. It does well in sauces or just served with crusty bread and cheese. Plus it has a great container for displaying. My husband introduced me to it. He used to buy it at Superstore many years ago. We have a super-old jar at home that really needs replacing!
I saw the thread about the Clovis mustard. It sounds good too!

I picked up some Trader Joe's Speculoos Cookie Butter at the little Trader Joe's outlet on West Broadway today!! I've been wanting to try Speculoos spread ever since I read about it here! Saw some at Stong's in Dunbar, but the price was a little too high for my liking. The Trader Joe's brand cost me $5.49. Maybe I should have bought two jars....the kids have discovered it!!

For really, really excellent chocolate look for Beta5 (available at their store, or Dirty Apron).

And/or Salt Spring Island cheese (Juliette or Blue Juliette) - will last for a good half a day + out of refrigeration and is excellent stuff. Available at Whole Foods / Choices / etc.
