Dinner at Miku in Vancouver BC left me with two questions - please help!

Kaide Sushi. Tom the owner and sushi chef spent over a decade training in Nagoya, Japan and is meticulous when it comes to ordering his fish from suppliers and in prepping his rice. If you do go there, I recommend skipping the rolls and going for either the Kaide assorted sushi or ordering nigiri sushi a la carte. Both the unagi don and marinated tuna don are excellent as well. I also recommend sitting at the bar for the full charm of it, even if there's nothing particularly charming about the decor. While not the cheapest sushi joint in Vancouver, it certainly has some of the freshest fish outside of Japan, without having to pay Miku or Tojo prices. After having just returned from Japan two weeks ago, eating the same old farmed salmon sashimi that every sushi joint in Vancouver has just doesn't do it for me anymore.

Best Dumpling in Vancouver/Burnaby/Richmond/

The dumplings Grayelf mentioned are cooked gyoza/guotie/jiaozi-style: Fry them flat side down undisturbed in a bit of oil in a nonstick pan, then just as the bottoms start to brown, add a splash of water to the pan, cover so the dumplings steam. The water will evaporate and the dumplings will start to fry again. Uncover. When the bottoms are golden brown, the dumplings are done. Invert a serving plate on top and carefully flip them into it. Serve with a dipping sauce. Soy, vinegar, ginger slivers.

Our chive flowers have come on gangbusters in the week we were away in SF -- time for local asparagus "carpaccio" with lemon vinaigrette and fresh chive flowers again, woohoo!

I usually find that even area greengrocers start getting the local 'gus in now-ish. Though it doesn't compare to the thin, delicate stalks from my dad's (and it sounds like, from kinnick's) garden, it's still pretty good.

5 days in Vancouver

I really like Kirin City Square for dim sum but I understand there was a recentish change in ownership/management that may account for the service weirdness. And leaving stuff on the table you didn't order is just plain awful. But you did get that elusive deepfried roll with the preserved egg, ginger and sea creatures. It is my favourite and hard to find. I still haven't had it at Kirin.

So glad you liked Ajisai, Kishimoto and Miko. They are my three favourite sushi bars in Vancouver right now (not that I've tried them all of course).

Agree that Rangoli is not special enough for a detour. I used to like it better, actually.

Bee Kim Heng is my favourite jerky place, bar none. The pork really is superior but I'm sorry to hear that the address is wrong online as the original spot is about ten blocks away.

And you tried HKBBM, my top choice for roast pork and char siu also! Gotta get the latter "half/half" for me :-). And eat the roast pork in the car on the way home.

East West Market is a small gem in that part of Main, actually.

I don't like, nor shop, at Nesters, so as far as a 'comprehensive' grocery stores go, Main St is extremely under-served (for me at least) south of 13th Ave where IGA is.

FWIW I don't buy the meats at East West when I'm in that area, but of course Windsor Meats is just across the road :-)

YES! absolutely at Woodwards. I had forgotten about that - Park Royal.

one also used to be able to order some similar flavour at DQ

but no more. I have asked.

(also - what was the remnants of a "dining room" at the HBC downtown Vcvr is now fancy department store menswear area)

nowadays, sometimes i resort to choc Ovaltine powder (avail at most supermarkets in the hot chocolate section) - make it yourself at home (ie your own milkshake). It is not the real Vcvr old days at Wdwd's - but it works for that certain flavour hit.
