Fine dining with serious food restrictions

I'm not 100% sure about how their menu stacks up with the nightshade restriction (that's a toughie!), but I'm confident that The Acorn on Main St. would be able to prepare something to suit everyone's requirements.

The only trouble is that they don't take reservations, except for their big table, which is for 6 or more. Don't count on getting a table as a walk-in, unless you arrive either very early or very late. At least they are open until 2 am...

Vancouver Essential Restaurants- Can anyone point me to a list?

Hmm, I need to refresh my impressions some of them again :-)

Mind you, generally my dim sums or dinners at Red Star, Sun Sui Wah, Kirin and Dynasty (we seem to do musical chairs with them) are big family affairs a la knights of the round table (read: I'm not paying, LOL) so yeah, my impressions of their prices are not accurate, if to my own gain.

Lok's ..... quality is relative, but only if you do the more $$ set dinners, otherwise a couple of a la cartes won't blow you away. Mind you I'm comparing them to the only other Canto option in Kerrisdale, which is Golden Ocean, which cranks out decent dim sum and ok dinners, but I didn't recommend because their interior is needing a serious refresh/makeover.

I'd say Cindy's Palace, Western Lake and Dai Tung hold their own against Richmond's Cantonese places (ie: Lucky Tao, Hoi Tong) but I would not be authoritative enough to compare them based on what I've eaten at those places.

Oh, another good Canto in Vancouver is Bing Sheng:

Yes, Bigsby has great bread, if you like that style (we do) - crusty exterior with a chewy interior. They bake throughout the day so you can pick up a nice warm loaf in the afternoon. But I must say, the proprietors (former Red Onion owners) are a bit strange. Would it kill them to crack a smile at their customers? Then again, I'm only ever there in the afternoons and they've been up for over 12 hrs by then....

Hunter's has been replaced by Yates Street Taphouse. It was opened by two local guys who spent decades between them working for the big chains. Not quite a romantic place but a great place for a relaxing drink and above-average food at excellent prices. Brasserie L'Ecole if you don't mind waiting (no reservations). Tried Ca Va the last time I was in town and it was very good. Less than half a block away is the bustling Stages if you want a more upbeat atmosphere. We've never had a bad meal at Ulla.

I'm wondering if people are generally down about Safeway's produce and meats? Not that I think they are great, but I live downtown and there are 2 Safeways within a few blocks of my place and I usually get my non produce and non meat items there. Ie. cereal, canned goods, dairy, general pantry stuff like flower and sugar.

I typically avoid their meat and produce as I find I can get better elsewhere for a similar or cheaper price, but I'm ok with the rest of it.

West Coast Waffles - Victoria

I just wanted to pop back in and update you . . . last week was our Alaska cruise, and we stopped by West Coast Waffle on Saturday. It was at most a five minute walk from where our cab dropped us (Empress Hotel). At 7pm on a Saturday night, the place was empty, which was surprising. We ordered the chocolate/almond waffle. It was a large Belgian waffle studded with pockets of melted chocolate (they add chocolate chunks to the waffle batter!), covered with sliced almonds, whipped cream and chocolate sauce. I ordered one for us to share, and we devoured it. It was delicious, and I'm so glad we made the effort to seek it out. We easily could have eaten another one since it was surprisingly light, and my son wanted to order a second after we finished the first, but I knew we were going to walk around downtown, where there was a plethora of ice cream and candy shops with plenty of treats for us to sample. Btw I was thrilled to find dark chocolate Kit Kat at the 7-11 downtown - we can't get the dark chocolate ones in the U.S.!

Thanks again and hope to make it back to your beautiful city sometime in the future.

Sashimi Grade Fish on Vancouver Island?

Hi,

I registered here today to find out if anyone knows of a good source of Sashimi grade fish and shellfish on Vancouver Island.

I've been basically relying on very small Asian stores that charge an extreme premium for something as simple as a small fillet of reliably flash frozen (e.g. -37c for 3 days or -18 for more) salmon - so much that it'd be cheaper for me to eat out, tip included.

The same case exists with scallops... There is one local scallop farm on the island and it costs $2 for me to buy one scallop. I can buy a completely prepared sushi piece for $1.25 with this same scallop.

Normally I take a trip to the mainland and visit Angel seafood but they are now closed to the public.

A huge thanks to those who have any information!
