Mission Cantina South Amherst anyone been?

It shocks me to say this, but it's excellent: the fish tacos are as as good as any that can be found in the La Jolla or the gaslight district in San Diego. The pineapple salsa is a savory-sweet combo that's remarkable, and the enchiladas are always perfectly done, whether with carnitas, carne asada, or chicken. It's also possible to get a very spicy chipotle (seriously) salsa. I think the prices are much better than Veracruzana (and the food is incomparable). Veracruzana is a ridiculous excuse for Mexican food. The tab gets pricey when ordering wine or beer or their excellent margaritas or other original cocktails--but the wine and beer list are, again, shockingly, very good, especially for a place this small. The locals (like me) love it (and I am a California girl who badly misses decent food, Mexican or otherwise here in Amherst/NoHo), and there's always a wait. They are as surprised by their own success as the rest of us (they had thought it would be a good take-out joint), but the decor is original and funky, as is their music selection (from Johnny Cash to Blondie to the best of Motown). They're going to expand into the former liquor store next door.

Best sushi in Western Mass?

I know this has been discussed before, but I'd like some recent opinions.

There are so many sushi options in Northampton but I just haven't been that impressed with any of them. We've been to Osaka most often but have also tried all the others at least once. Are any places worth another shot? Sushi is so pricy and I hate feeling like I wasted my money, plus a trip to Brooklyn a few months ago reminded me of just how good sushi can be.

I read a few good reviews of KS Restaurant in Westfield. Has anyone been there?

It is OPEN. We ate there first week of May 2012 and it was GREAT. Yes they DO have dosas on the menu, and the food was incredibly good. It is comparable to Coromandel (we thought better... then naan was lighter and more filling to the dosa) and the flavors excellent. The prices were lower than Coromandel, and it was closer for us (we live in Stratford) so it was a win-win-win!

The interior of the place gets a B... it isn't spectacular but fine. We are looking forward to enjoying the HUGE outdoor deck however when it gets warm this summer. I love when restaurants offer outdoor space that isn't on the road or parking lot!

The owner let us know that the owners are primarly Nepalese...so I imagine if you have a dish from Nepal that you like, you could ask for it.

Great service too! It was a great night.

I absolutely think that the restaurant has a responsibility to inform you if they can't provide you with the level of hospitality that they normally deliver. If they can't, then they should offer you a solution (drinks, wine, dessert, etc.).
Either they shouldn't have taken your reservation, or told you at the time that they had a private party that evening (I doubt the party was arranged since your reservation was placed).
It's a good thing that you were able to arrange a great meal on such short notice.

Great Sushi at Hanami II on Route 1 in Branford, Connecticut

As a recently converted fan of Hanami in Clinton, I was delighted to hear they'd opened in Branford (closer to me in Guilford). And the new place more than lives up to expectations. Beautiful big modern space (no hibachi room, though, for those — not me — who want that circus). But the fish is every bit as good as in Clinton. The same incredible range of interesting rolls, and the expected range of sushi/sashimi. Best (fresh from Maine) uni I can recall in this part of the world. Overall excellent.

The sake list is just adequate (not close to Saeko's list at Yooki Yama on the green), and they don't offer fresh real wasabi (as opposed to the eponymous restaurant in Orange), but otherwise it's hard to think of ways for them to improve. Tonight there were very few people (outnumbered by the staff, I think), but I hope other sushi/sashimi lovers on the shoreline will discover them. I

Looks like this spot has reopened as The Red House, searching shows there is another place in New London or Norwich of the same name, same owners?

The menu looks interesting, regular old chicken tenders and burgers, but also some standouts:
Fried pickles and okra for an app., a sandwich of Dr. Pepper basted beef brisket with a BBQ blue
cheese sauce, and a Japanese Gaucho steak with a wasabi balsamic glaze, fries and coleslaw.

They also have a band schedule listed for the weekends.

Thanks for the tip on the Sea Crest. Always looking for new waterview options that serve decent food. They are so few and far between on the Cape.

Another option is the Casino Wharf FX in Falmouth Heights. Mind you, we've only had one sampling at lunch, but the food was quite acceptable and the spot was wonderful with a nice patio overlooking the sound, Vineyard, and town beach below.

Jason Hawkins is NOT a food critic or restaurant reviewer and readily admits it. He is about "what" and "where," doing features for channel 30 and previously, for CPTV. In fact, I don't really think there are many restaurant reviewers worth reading.

I'm with kattyeyes. I come here and read the comments. Pretty soon you get to know which posters really know something about dining out. They are my "reviewers."

Newport- special occasion lunch

I agree with Castle Hill although depending on when you go, you can have very different experiences. My wife and I have done our anniversary there for years. Generally on weekday nights. It is peaceful, amazing views, amazing service, and amazing food. Two years ago we went on a Friday night and the outdoor patio bar was hopping with cougars that had drank to much and the table next to us seemed like they were directly off of the set of the housewifes of New Jersey, it was not conducive to a romantic anniversary experience. All of our experiences there have been top notch.

Last year we went to the Spiced Pear at the Chanler and it was awesome. I thought the view at Castle Hill was better. Chanler was a spectacular meal with wine pairings (generous pours) really really expensive.

I have heard good things about Tallulah on Thames.

The Boat House (I think that is what it is called, it is in the same group as Castle Hill, Newport Restaurant Group) is very very good as well. More of a harbor view but very good food and very good service.

Went to Perro Salado in October and the food and service were both very good. Not nearly as fancy as the first two but good and fun.

Cafe Rio - Brazil in Old Saybrook?

Ever since Fogo closed last year, I have been hoping to find another restaurant featuring the exceptional meats of Brazil. From my experience today, Cafe Rio is unlikely to be it, although it is run by a friendly Brazilian couple.

Serving breakfast Tuesday through Sunday, I have seen glowing reviews of their breakfasts and sandwiches on the web, so when I was in the vicinity at lunchtime, I decided to try their Brazilian buffet. There was a choice of more than a dozen dishes, and a few of the salads were better than average. Unfortunately the meats didn't live up to expectations, the beef slices were a little tough and needed the gravy they came with to improve their taste. A sausage and bean dish was not exceptional either. There was a nice looking chicken entree but I did not try it. After you fill your dish, they weigh it and charge you accordingly.

They had a busy take-out business while I was there, so someone must like the cuisine. Before I go back, I will definitely look up dishes other reviewers liked, since I wouldn't try the buffet again. In their favor, their washroom was clean, they offer a selection of tea bags, and there were some scrumptious looking desserts, that I didn't have time for.

Thanks, guys! And helen wheels, my daughter is a Helen, too... but she's the HelKat (Helen Kathleen), although when she is roller-skating her dad likes to call her Helen Wheels. Her uncle, who is a dork, didn't like the name because he worried she might marry a guy whose last name was Ahandbasket. Seriously.
I've been perusing the 'net as to the recommendations, checking out hours and menus, and now I'm jealous that I'm not going on this trip.

I've been once and it seemed promising to me.

Extensive beer list, good selection of wines and nothing on the menu is over $13.
My side salad was fresh, tasty and more than enough to share.
I had a fancy grilled cheese (w. robusto and cheddar) which was also very good.

I think it will do well and benefit from when the Dirty Truth's is mobbed.
And apart from the weirdly bright sign that blinds you when you enter, I liked the atmosphere.

I figured that ZaZa was going to be SUB-PAR! That is why I was very reluctant to spend money in that place. I've also never been to Aria. What do you give it on a scale of 1-10? Also if ZaZa is SUB-PAR then so will be their new spot. You have to remember that even if the place changes the managerial and operational aspects remain the same.

Stopped by today and a delicious, meaty, juicy burger that dripped down my chin and pooled on the platter(paper lined). You could really taste the beef come through. It's labeled 6 oz., but seemed more like 8-10 oz. A very good ciabatta was grilled and soft enough to not squeeze out the unremarkable cheese and bacon. Fries were hand cut and crisp, but not quite sweet enough. Perhaps too fresh.
When I'm back in the area I'll definately stop by again.
