      <title>Changes in meat to be viewed and discussed</title>

      <description>The Litchfield County Farm Bureau will be screening the film AMERICAN MEAT tomorrow evening, Wednesday, June 19th, 2013, at the auditorium at the University of CT  campus in Torrington.  The doors open at 6:30pm and the film starts at 7pm.  

The film shows how some long-time family beef, hog and poultry farms have modified their production methods to be more environmentally sustainable and humane, and in the process, wind up with a product that is healthier and more flavorful for the consumer.

Following the film, an open discussion will be held with the following on the panel:

Christopher Prosperi- Chef/Owner of Metro Bis restaurant in Simsbury, CT, a Hartford Courant recipe columnist, an international cooking teacher from Mexico to Italy, a weekly chef on NBC 30, and weekly co-host on "The Faith Middleton Show: The Food Schmooze" on WNPR. The New York Times declares "...Prosperi is a technical master, an original American chef whose restaurant is worth traveling for" and the Zagat Survey has ranked Metro Bis in the top five in the state for American food!

Michael Keilty- works with the SARE (sustainable agriculture research and education)  state coordinators in CT, MA and RI to coordinate a tri-state SARE program dealing with local meat production, processing and marketing in Southern New England. Since 1974, Michael has owned Maple Spring Farms, a diversified farm in Morris, CT raising livestock, produce and herbs for culinary and medicinal uses.
He has also spent many years working as a research assistant and agricultural educator with the Department of Plant Science at the University of Connecticut, coordinating a wide variety of sustainable agriculture programs. He is also a member of the CT Food Policy Council, author of Alternative Health Practices for Livestock, and the founding chair of the Connecticut Community Gardening Association.

      <description>The Copper Beech Inn has reopened its dining rooms and based on dinner last Saturday, I would give them a B+.  They did a nice job with the renovations.  The new Oak Room (near where the old Pip's Bistro was) is lovely.  The bar is classy and at least last Saturday most of the tables were full with what appeared to be happy diners.  We chose to eat in the front room because it's quiet and we have always liked the ambiance there.  The front dining room was about half full and at least so far it didn't seem like any real improvements or upgrades had been made there.  Some of the waiters from the old days were back at their stations.  Henry waited on us with his usual proficient, friendly but not intrusive service.  I started with a burrata and tomato appetizer which was reminiscent of an app I had in the old Pip's Bistro room a few years back.  Nice creamy burrata with heirloom tomatoes...quite tasty. Mrs. CM started with the Boston Bibb Lettuce salad and was very pleased with the light vinegarette dressing.  I enjoyed my entree, scallops with a pleasant corn and lobster side dish.  The scallops were cooked perfectly.  Mrs. CM had the tenderloin and said it was the equal of steak she's had at Morton's, a major compliment because she loves Morton's steaks.  Overall, a very nice dinner in one of our favorite dining rooms.  If you're looking for creative, original, cooking, this may not be the place for you.  Overall, former chef Tyler Anderson seemed to take more chances in the kitchen and his menu was more adventuresome than what is currently being offered at CBI.  We will be back, however.  There's something to be said for a restaurant that does the classics well and consistently (we hope) does not disappoint.  </description>

      <description>I've taken 20+ soft-ish shell lobsters from Auburn to Pittsburgh and they were fine, including an overnight.  Layer in a cooler, from the bottom up; ice-newspaper-lobster-newspaper-lobster-newspaper-ice.  Top off ice occasionally but make sure not to crush them.  Drain melted water from the bottom so there's never more than .5" of water or so.</description>

      <title>Fantastic strawberries at Jones Family Farms, Shelton, CT</title>

      <description>My husband and I decided to go strawberry picking at Jones Family Farms in Shelton today because the weather was nice (at last).

So glad we did because the strawberries are PERFECT. They are having a banner year! Red, sweet, juicy tasting like sunshine.

We picked 20 pounds. A worker told me they are expecting them to last through June. We'll definitely be back. Great berries.

      <description>Just had a quite tasty breakfast at Crazy Burger.  Spacing on the exact name (something like Bennylatke) but it was eggs benedict on zucchini latkes on a bolo (portuguese sweet muffin) with hollandaise sauce on top.  The eggs were a bit overdone, and the zucchini latke didn't really add anything to it, but this was the best hollandaise sauce I've ever had- close to a whipped texture with a lemony bite; I confess I checked to make sure nobody was looking and then swiped the last of it off my plate with my finger.  The home fries on the side were more like mini square french fries, very light, crispy and delicious.  Fresh squeezed carrot juice was a nice treat!</description>

      <description>Blantyre/wheatleigh are at another level of price and formality.  Of the others i think old inn on the green is by far the best.

Chez nous and John Andrews are both good, John Andrews has a nicer country setting, chez nous a tad more casual but I think the food is slightly better.

Old mill is mediocre in my opinion.

Agree with cafe Adam as another good option, they're open for lunch too.  New location same food as the old, I actually liked the old space better, found the new one a bit gloomy.</description>

      <description>Thanks all for the helpful discussion. I returned recently from a visit to Pioneer Valley and I was pleasantly surprised! I guess the comments here prompted me to go in with fairly low expectations. However, Northampton was great! It was very walkable and lively and with a large number of restaurants and cafes. 

I understand how living in a small place for a while can make one jaded about the food scene. Currently I live in a similarly-sized city and at the start I was excited about all the restaurants. Two years later and I am craving something new and innovative. Small-town restaurants tend not to stray too far from the mainstream. However, there seemed to be enough in Northampton to keep me going for a while even if I might end up disappointed more often than not. 

I was very impressed by Amanouz Cafe; Moroccan is not something we have in my current town. The Northampton Brewery did the job. The Bluebonnet diner was classic in every sense. The Vietnamese place in Amherst was so-so but fine for a cheap lunch. 

So I make my move with a sense of optimism. We'll see how long it lasts.</description>

Not sure about the new head chef, as the food at the Barnstable House was never very good, and the Old Yarmouth Inn not much better, but I'm hopeful.
