Bill Rieber's restaurant

My parents were married in 1956 and had their reception at Bill Reibers. I have never been there - it's always seemed like a mythological place to me, because we had moved to SC by the time I came along, and I never really knew where it was. My mom is in her 80's, living in SC and doing well. I can't wait to ask her more about her memories. Thanks for responding.

I treated myself to lunch at Polpettina today and it was simply outstanding. I had a grandma slice with ricotta, speck, and spring onion and the chicken milinase sandwich/hero with roasted peppers, arugula pesto, and house made mozzarella.

I received an email this morning that Groupon members are being offered a deal on The Iron Roost. As of 7 pm tonight, more than 560 of the deals had been sold. The offer looks like it ends Thursday night around midnight.. This is likely to get them some good exposure.

After decades of loyal patronage we finally gave up a year ago. Sly the son of the owner was just too much to deal with. He's in the wrong business.
Maybe they sold. Too bad for the father... He was the consummate restaurateur.

Club Car in Mamaroneck - Dont Bother Making a Reservation

Hey all! Haven't been on Chowhound since they changed they way the boards are organized. However, just had to chime in re: Club Car. I have never been a huge fan of Brian MacMennimins food (Oyster House in Larchmont, MacMennamin's and Post House in New Rochelle). However, this time I think he hit it out of the park. We had a reservation for last Thursday, it was our wedding anniversary. I love the space, the crowd was friendly, the service was quite good (unlike previous experiences with his restaurants) and I thought the prices were fine. My husband had the stuffed sole with lobster/crabmeat and loved it. I had the panko/mint crusted lamb chops. We were very happy with the food and would certainly return here again.

I must amend my original post. I really like the owners, and the food is usually good, but my breakfast this morning was not good at all: nearly burnt bacon, potatoes I had said not to bring, toast that was not toasted, slow and poor service (and there were only two other customers, who weren't even ordering food). The owners were not there, so I suspect consistency is a problem (obviously!), especially when the Phillips are gone.

If you didn't like Southern Spice, which I think is the best all around in the area, I don't know how much you would care about my opinion, but all these places are favorites for at least one thing or another so...........

1. Fiza Diner- takeout because despite the remodel it is still a dump, for excellent spicy Bangladeshi food. Keema, kabobs and curries are all really good.

2.Usha for awesome chaat

3.Mumbai Xpress for veg southern stuff and their famous sandwich

Recently Lola in Great Neck was serving a fantastic fish taco. Their menu changes, though, so I don't know how long it will be there. 516 American Bistro used to have a good fish taco as well, but I'm not sure if the new restaurant in the same spot still has them either.

Rochester - anything great?

I'm sorry but have to disagree. As much as I enjoy Dinosaur it is a far cry from world-class BBQ. My main issue with it being that it lacks any regional distinctiveness that would otherwise distinguish it from any other BBQ restaurant, and is instead, a hybrid of many regional styles all executed ok, but none exceptionally.

While the food and atmosphere are pleasant enough, its brisket is a far cry from anything you'd expect or find in Texas, the ribs aren't comparable to the ones in Memphis, the pulled pork is weak compared to the whole hog style you'd find in the Carolina's and the sauces aren't anything quite like those of Kansas City.

I won't comment much on The King and I, seeing as how I've never eaten there, but a quick glance at the menu lacks the regional distinctiveness the OP was looking for. The lack of regionalized Thai dishes (say Isan-style), coupled with the number of Americanized Chinese dishes are both red flags to me.

Far more interesting should the OP want to go less formal would be dishes distinct to Western New York or Rochester such as a garbage plate, Beef on Wick, Buffalo Wings, Dibella's Subs, Abbots Frozen Custard, etc.

Best Sandwiches in westchester?

For whatever it's worth, when I asked the guys at the Thornwood location about the A&S that just opened in Mount Kisco, they swore up and down that they had nothing to do with them. I've never gotten food directly from the one in Mount Kisco, but I've had stuff catered by them and was not impressed. The location in Thornwood, on the other hand, is consistently solid - staff is friendly (never been upsold on anything), prepared foods are good, sandwiches use some Boars Head but are still good (I like Dante's better though). Their italian combo is as good as they get, although their best sandwiches are the paninis - they have a great roasted pork with broccoli rabe and steak pizzaiola. Unfortunately I don't think they do the paninis on the weekends...

we had a problem like that several years back on our anniversary. reservation for 2 on a tuesday. we arrived on time. didn't even get a menu or water for half an hour. by the time all was said and done, we had a very good app and nothing else after almost 2 hours while others came in and had whole meals. we didn't pay for what we did have and the chef had the nerve to ask what the problem was. totally inexcusable on a slow weeknight. needless they closed shortly after.

On a very busy day of the year-Mother's Day-we were the last table and enjoyed a very tasty meal at Tarry Tavern. Thanks to the hospitality of the owner my MIL was super thrilled. Service was good and all the food combinations were interesting and enjoyed by all. Love the use of different ingredients (sunchokes, wild rice, farro, swiss chard, salsify, dates etc.)
Thanks for the extra TLC Henry. We hope to be back soon! Be sure to try the Gnocchi and desserts too! They are doing a class for WCC in the Fall. www.sunywcc.edu

Grace's Table--White Plains

Mother's Day disappointment. We went to Grace's for dinner, prix fixe $50 was a bit overpriced for portion size. We were seated for 2 1/2 hours because service was super slow. Lamb chop dinner had 2 very small chops. Ceviche app was only slightly bigger than an amuse bouche. Steak Diane was mostly potatoes with a very small looking steak portion. Desserts were okay, although we waited 30 minutes to get them. I realize that Mother's Day is busy in restaurants but we had an early reservation and there were lots of empty tables. Flavors were good but honestly not worth the price. There are lots of restaurants with good food, and service that have better prices and portions- Haven, Mima, Iron Horse and Harvest to name a few.

Went back recently and had the duck in a jar and some grilled asparagus. The grilled asparagus was perfect. Just like we grill it at home. The duck in a jar was better this time. The glass jar was shallower and without a lid. The nuts were more finely chopped and didn't seem like peanuts. The bread is still buttery and greasy with parsley on top. The dish is rich enough without buttered bread. The simple grilled bread that originally accompanied this dish was perfect.

Also learned they have a new chef. . . .

I stopped by Seasons Cafe this morning after a doctor's appointment. It's next to the Billings post office (where Enchanted Bakery used to be). There were some minor renovations to the interior. It's still a very warm and inviting space, perfect for a leisurely lunch over a book or a quick breakfast sandwich on the run.

The baked goods in the display cake all looked great. I saw some red velvet cupcakes, squiggle mini cupcakes (reminiscent of Hostess chocolate cupcakes), carrot cake, cheesecakes, and the famous cream cheese cakes. Initially, I was a little confused because I thought that the cakes that bob gaj was talking about were cheesecakes. They're not cheesecakes, but delicious cakes made with cream cheese that came in two varieties (I think), apple and blueberry. It was reminiscent of coffee cake without the cinnamon streusel topping. All I know is that I bought a blueberry cream cheese cake for my co-workers and it was gone within the hour. Absolutely delicious. They're open from 7-3 on Mother's Day, so I'm planning to pick up one or two before I head down to my in-laws. I also enjoyed samples of the apple version and some carrot cake...fantastic.

From their menu:
egg sandwiches
wraps/omelets
french toast
bagels
various sandwiches that range from $4.50 to $7.25
Description of a few sandwiches:
The Peasantwich: cheddar, fresh apples, red onions and Dijon on sourdough bread
Turkey: w/marinated portobello, roasted red peppers and mustard on ciabatta
Mediterranean Wrap: roast beef (or chicken) w/roasted red peppers, mozzarella cheese, and pesto aioli
soup
smoothies (Caffeine Scream, strawberry banana, Tropical Breeze)
scones
muffins, danish
croissants
truffle cakes

I thought it would be fun to do a Saturday evening birthday dinner at a diner. I haven't been to any of my old haunts in about 10 years though. I remember the Port Chester Diner, Rye Diner & Nautilus Diners having fun atmosphere and decent food on a Saturday evening. Is this still true? Do these places even exist still?

Gluten Free Restaurants around Westchester

This is all very interesting info.

We use San J Organic Tamari soy sauce at home because we found many others contain some kind of additive that contains gluten, possibly the caramel coloring contains wheat. I think when my wife checked the label of a Kikkoman soy sauce it said it contained wheat.

So now we check the label on everything we buy. We didn't realize how many things contain wheat (even some shampoos!).

WORST and BEST in SARATOGA SPRINGS

My current favorites are Tiznow and Maestro. Prime at Saratoga National when price is not an issue. Bailey's has good casual fare (bar food, but a little more creative) and a great martini list. Forno Bistro has great pizza and beer/wine specials during the week, but I can't comment on their entrees. I think Stadium cafe is over rated (not bad, just overrated).

Olde Towne Inn(?) Suffern

Obviously, I'm not even sure what the name of this place was, but it faced the train tracks. I stopped in a half dozen times while coming on/off the NY Thruway. I always thought it was pretty good food for a decent price, and the establishment itself seemed like it had been around forever. The only problem I could discern was that you had to wait around for a very, very long time before they actually got around to serving you, and the waitresses, while pleasant, often seemed befuddled. Last time I drove by, the place was obviously gone (I think there's a Greek restaurant there now). Anybody have any idea why a seemingly venerable (at least to me, a NJ native who comes to Suffern only occasionally) old watering hole like this went belly up?

Tired of the Same Old Westchester Saturday Night

Have you considered venturing north of mid-Westchester? There are many wonderful options if you'll expand your geography a bit.

Also, do you consider Port Chester to be mid-Westchester? How about starting with Inca and Gaucho? Peruvian/Argentinian food, definitely in your price restrictions.

I went a few weeks ago. Having sampled a few in the new crop of "coal-fired brick-oven" pizza places popping up in the White Plains area, I thought the pizza here was on the soggy side. Not that tasty either; Iwould recommend Frankie & Fanucci's in Hartsdale or Mamaroneck over it. Also, it is extreley noisy because of all the hard, relective surfaces in the place.

rampfest in hudson - anyone been?

tomorrow is "rampfest" in hudson. there's a bunch of restaurants that are supposed to be participating / giving away food samples cooked with ramps.

i know it's late in the ramps season...

but is this thing any good? last year, the rampfest was $40 (!). this year, it's $20. i'm an hour away...not sure if it's worth the drive / fee.

if we did go, we'd likely go to da/ba or swoon afterwards..

thanks.
