Beasty Burgers - Red Bank

Was owed lunch by a co worker so we went to Beasty . I am a burger person and frequently disappointed by most, gotta recommend the burger here. They use Prime meat and you can taste it. To the tool who groused about it without trying it stick to Burger king pal. Not a fan of the owner but wisely he outsourced the kitchen to someone who knows what he's doing. Had the
Guinness Cheddar Bacon burger. The cheese sauce doesn't taste of that nasty beer but brings out the sharpness of the cheese without bringing out the separated oil . Fries were crispy and decent but I tasted too much oil aftertaste Bun was nicely toasted and the lettuce tomatoe onion were sparse but thinly sliced and the pickle a good one. I asked I'd they used Hellmans which they do and they had to get from the basement; weird but it was Hellmans. Ordered med-rare and was cooked perfectly. Their differentiation is that they sear one side nice with a nice crust then flip and cook the other side in the Au -Jus which makes the burger very soft and very wet and juicy. The Au Ju really. Is unneeded IMHO because the burger was really juicy to repeat. I would give my burger a 9.

Salute ( glen ridge) vs, Rose Mediterranean ( west caldwell)

Salute seemed more like a place for small plates where you can get some pizza etc.. It's loud but not a bad choice.
M-Rose is more of place where you would get your own meal and i think a bit more upscale. Food is good probably no better or worse than Salute just different. I just like sitting outdoors at M-Rose and the service was better and I liked the overall experience . I really enjoyed the fish specials there.

I think Frank Anthony's located exactly in between both of them on Bloomfield Ave in Verona is better than both and they also have outdoor seating. FA's has some of the best pizza you will ever have and their fresh mozz is off the charts.

Parking in Montclair can be a nightmare.

How's the meat at Arctic Market and Butcher in Point Pleasant?

The Arctic is the best butcher market I have seen in years. It reminds me of the old shops in Jersey City. The kid running the place is a local boy who has a wonderful selection of meats. If you are looking for Dry aged call them in advance and they will prepare it for you. I have done this on a few occasions and it has turned out great! As for Pork, they have a wide selection including heritage pork. Their gourmet sausage selection is also one of my favorites but please do not pass up the Grass fed beef options or their store cooked roast beef! Delish!

Good Cantonese (like Shanghai Bun in Matawan) in North Jersey?

There's this place called Shanghai bun in Matawan that is awesome cantonese food. It's a lot of noodle soups and other stuff, but it's all really authentic cantonese food that isn't just dim sum. They even have the special real wok burners that use buttloads of gas. On the weekends, they even have cantonese breakfast, you can get the fried crullers, soybean "soup" sweet or savory, radish su bing, etc.

That is, really good cantonese food OTHER THAN dim sum.

Any place like this in North Jersey? Or Rockland or Westchester county? Or Hudson county?

and anybody know what kind of chili oil they use as a condiment? It's smoky and aged tasting, whereas whatever I buy has too much of the stinky fermented flavor, too strong. The chili oil they have on the table is clean tasting and amazing. Where do i get chili oil like this?

Service has always been top notch. The restaurant has repeatedly received four stars. My favorites include scallop cerciche, Raviolo, Sweet Pea canniloni with lump crab, Swordfish, pounded pork chop, porcini ravioli and the risotto, zabaglone and banana tart. I also love their breakfast and Italian sausages. I live walking distance from John's but still like Barht's for the sausages - worth a drive to NP.

Superlative food in Bergen County?

I agree with Capital Grill and Chicken Kebab. For Greek, I also like Sparta Taverna (formerly George's) in Ridgefield Park, especially the moussaka and pasticchio, although all of their souvlaki dishes are also excellent. As for Thai, Bangkok Garden and Wondee's in Hackensack are right across the street from each other and are both decent - Bangkok Garden's ingredients tend to be a bit better, I've found, while Wondee's is generally more authentic, a little spicier and a little less sweet. Pho Thai Lao in Maywood is a family restaurant that's a Thai and Lao fusion of sorts, and they have some interesting authentic dishes - although I've always preferred curry from Wondee's.

Like you, I've never had much success with Italian that was worth the trip and money. Anyone have any suggestions for that?

On the other hand, they've been around for a few years, even in this economy, so they must be doing something right.

i'm kinda anti-Baumgart's, but my sister loves their grilled chicken salad.

Greek Taverna - just up from Baumgart's - has a nice menu of salads...though for a good Greek salad i'd just drive up to It's Greek To Me on Main Street in Ft. Lee. (in fact, the salad is the only reason i go there.)

Baguette Delite/Banh mi viet in Edison.

Based on reco's here from fellow CH'ers, the family & I went here this afternoon. Very tasty banh mi sandwiches. A popular little place with friendly service. Some bars tools and 1 long counter by the front window, and 4 or 5 tables that seat either 2 or 4, that's it. Banh mi run about $5 or so, pho about $7 or $8, so very affordable.

We tried several items, but the BBQ pork banh mi really stood out.

Although we live over a half hour away, you can bet that this will be a place we'll return to in the not too distant future.

Anyone know where I can get burrata cheese in New Jersey?

Top Tomato (at least in Brick) also now carrying domestic burrata made by Antonio Mozzarella Factory (of Newark). $6.99 for an 8 oz ball. Good texture, but no flavor. The imported stuff is still worth the drive to Sickles Market.

Where to watch soccer (Premier League football) on Sunday?

You very nearly got your wish!! Quite a dramatic finish as QPR improbably held a 2-1 lead at the end of regulation time, and MCity scored twice in stoppage for the win and the championship.

The whole game was the game to watch, between the red card and the two QPR goals ...

Thanks to all for the suggestions -- turns out I watched at home with my wife, it being Mother's Day, and all ...

Best Italian Hot Dogs in NJ??

I've recently had an Italian Hot Dog from a truck called Marci's Dog House that in my opinion is the best I've had. I wrote a review here, but did not comment on the Italian Hot Dog until later in the thread, so scroll down. The owner will be making these on Saturdays and Sundays only. It is a specialty item involving a lot of prep work. He uses bigger dogs and better ingredients than anyone else making this sandwich.

Unique beach hot dog in Cape May in the 70's

Tommy is a great guy, but his hot dogs are just ok. He serves an all beef skinles Berk's as well as a beef/pork Berk's. The beef dog is average, the beef/pork slightly above average. But in addition to being skinless, these dogs are prepared on a roller grill. They lack the char and flavor imparted by a grill or griddle. The Berk's beef/pork frank is good deep fried. Toby's Cup in Lopatcong/Philipsburg fries this frank in peanut oil and it is exceptional. Roller grills are for convenience stores, movie theatres, and gas stations. Not for places specializing in hot dogs.

While the dogs are ok, Tommy's is highly overrated. Granted that South Jersey is a hot dog wasteland, but Tommy's is always awarded "best of" by publications like New Jersey Monthly. Maui's is in North Wildwood and their dogs are much, much better than Tommy's. Not only by and far the best hot dog joint in South Jersey, but one of the best in the whole state.

Serbian, Bosnian and/or Macedonian food in northern New Jersey

If you’re looking for Serbian, Bosnian and/or Macedonian food in northern New Jersey (Bergen County NJ), well have I got a place for you. Serbia, Bosnia and Macedonia are three of the states of the former Yugoslavia.

This little shop (Shop Express) located at 27 Belmont Ave. Garfield, NJ will absolutely blow you away. It is family owned and run and is open, 8 to 8, Monday thru Saturday. They serve a variety of home cooked foods, as well as pre-packaged goods.

They have a couple of tables so you can eat in, or you can get anything to go. They have specials during the week, on Monday it’s Musaka (Moussaka; a Greek meat and eggplant casserole, but this Yugoslav variation is made with meat and potatoes instead), Tuesday it’s Punjene Paprike (Polnati Piperki; stuffed peppers), Wednesday it’s Selsko Meso (beef stew with mushrooms), Thursday it’s Sarma (stuffed cabbage), and on Friday it’s Pasulj (Tavce Gravce, Grav; bean soup with or without smoked meat), and are available on a first come, first served basis.

They also have items which they serve daily, such as Cevapi (Kebapi; Cevapcici; grilled minced meat kebab, grilled or raw for the BBQ), Pljeskavica (Pleskavica; beef patty), Sarska Pljeskavica (Sharska; beef patty with cheese), Makedonska Pljeskavica (Makedonka; beef patty with ham and cheese), Pileci stek (pileski stek; grilled chicken), Raznici (chicken or pork shishkabob), Karmenadla (Kremenadla; pork chop), Vesalica (grilled strips of pork loin), Uvijaci (grilled chicken or pork wrapped in bacon), Burek and Banicka (phyllo dough cheese or meat pie), Kifle (Kifli; soft bread sticks), Ruska Salata (Russian salad), Yugoslav Yogurt, Domaca Kobasica (smoked sausage), Suvi Vrat (smoked pork neck), Rebra (smoked ribs), Slanina (smoked slab bacon), various Cheeses (Sireve), Kajmak (similar to sour cream), and Sopska salata (tomato, cucumber and onion salad).

I just found out about this place, and I’ve been going back every day just to try all the specials, of which I have yet to find one I don’t love (just like mom used to make).

Blue Bottle Cafe, Hopewell NJ

New menu at Blue Bottle always warrants a visit to explore and enjoy. Enjoy we did last night! Nibbled on the assortment of bread while looking at the menu, could probably eat a loaf of that raisin fennel.

Appetizers were diverse and delicious. Salad was hydroponic butter lettuce with wheatberries, fennel, asparagus, radish, brought together with a creamy lemon vinaigrette. Simple ingredients but together a mouth full of flavors and texture. House smoked rainbow trout, marinated beets, strip of pumpernickel with horseradish crème fraiche was flat out delicious. Last app were those wonderful gnocchi. This preparation has goat cheese gnocchi, English peas, broccoli, pancetta, herb crème fraiche nage. Light little seared pillows, these went down very easy.

Two very different entrees, we shared both. Pan seared scallops with green apple and potato puree, snap peas, golden beets, raisins, marcona almonds, carrot curry emulsion. The combination brought out the sweet flavor of the scallops. Braised pork shank sat on a large farotto stuffed cabbage, English peas, baby carrots with a pork reduction. The Flintstone sized shank over the faro stuffed cabbage was very creative, delicious and a large portion.
Desserts prepared by owner chef Rory Philipson are always a treat. We sampled a new one, Banana cake, brown sugar rum sauce, a ring of sliced bananas topped with a dollop of cinnamon whipped cream. Sounds heavy, it wasn’t, a perfect ending to the meal.

Great service by Krista and staff all evening, they really work well together. A 2005 Pegau CdP paired really well with the food. Enjoy the new menu, Blue Bottle will be closed from June 1 – June 10. The summer menu will be in effect after that.
