El Sausage Hombre at Red Owl Tavern

My wife works around the corner from here so I sent her on a recon mission. Her report was that the Italian sausage with herbs was excellent and a steal at $6 (bottle of water included). Chef Tellez himself topped her sandwich with a pickled cucumber salad. Other varieties offered were hot sausage, andouille, linguica, and a Vietnamese style sausage with lemon and ginger. Additional toppings included sauerkraut, pickled jalapenos, and tomato salsa.

I'm hoping that I can make it there the next time they set up or I will have my wife pick up a few extras to take home.

Ic. We did the sake pairing the first time around.

The second time we went with another couple, and three of us go the pricier omakase, while my man got the lower-priced one.

It was all fab. Great atmosphere, too. It's a really nice place.

Clearly Amblergirl really likes the Whip and took a chance. They agreed to accommodate them and then did not. And provoked the exact situation AG was trying to avoid (crying child). Perhaps bad judgement by AG, but bad behavior by the manager on duty at the Whip.

Surprised that Dettera in Ambler doesn't get more love on this board

I'd say the cost of your glass of Chianti was correctly priced. If you know anyone in the restaurant business, they'll tell you that the first glass pays for the bottle and the rest is either profit, if they sell more of that wine, or break even if they toss it after a day or two because no one else wanted the same wine that you chose. That was the pricing policy of a member of my family who owned three very successful restaurants and whose pricing for a bottle of wine was to add $1 to the cost of the bottle and then double it (($14 + $1) x 2 = $30 for the bottle), which most people who know wine pricing will tell you is extremely fair.

Regarding Dettera personally, I ate there 3 times before I decided I would not return. I was unhappy with the service, and I did not think I got value for my food $$$. There are too many places that offer both better service and better value.

Have 4 Overseas Visitors Coming - Where to take?

These days average Englishman or Irishman is likely to prefer ice-cold industrial lager (read stella, heineken, etc) to cellar-temp pints of bitter or stout.

If the weather is good it might be nice to give your guests a reprieve from their local weather by finding a place with outdoor seating. Morgan's Pier could be a nice place to spend a late-afternoon to early evening (before people come looking for a DJ). Standard Tap has a nice outdoor area. There are lots of others - Philly.com recently published a list of rooftop bars.

Somehow, nobody has mentioned Estia on Locust St. They have a decent $30 three course price fixe business lunch special that includes washer-fresh octopus, freshly grilled fish, and a dessert like bakalava. Good food, relaxed, comfy atmosphere and not pretentious (albeit expensive as it gets for dinner when the fish is sold by the pound).

I would absolutely write a letter to the manager and let them know what happened. Alas, the past two visits at Lacroix we were greeted with rather green servers. One was really good, the other seemed a bit clueless, especially when she neglected to let us know that the wonderful fish they serve at lunch is now served in an extremely spicy broth. I almost want to ask to reserve a server (Jorge) the next time. Some places it does not make so much of a difference but at Lacroix there should be no excuse for this.

Avenue Deli

Had brunch on Sunday at "Avenue Deli" in Landsdowne and it was delicious.
Italian wedding soup came with a matzoh ball and Italian meatballs, home made stock...wonderful. The sandwiches (we had chicken and a meatball) came with a fresh salad or fries and the seasonings were perfect on both and good bread too...The finale was a house made cheesecake with lemon curd, a wonderful way to end a scrumptious meal.
Still quite new but I think they will have a good following...we will be back soon!

They have a mediocre version of them at DiBruno's Rittenhouse location but they are not all that prevalent around town. Maybe Isgro's ight have them. I know that Termini's does not.

This is great, and whatever the outcome this can only be good news for the local dining scene. I have always felt like we need an "anchor" restaurant in Ambler, something that is more chef-driven to make it really a destination for folks outside the area. Even if he does not win, this still could draw people to the restaurant and the town.

I go quite often from about a mile and a half away (Queen Village). I think it depends on why you are interested in them. They pretty much always have local meats, eggs, milk, and yogurt. They also have good coffee and their own line of preserves, pickles and nut butters. It IS very tiny. Check out their facebook page - they update regularly with what they have just gotten in or are well stocked with. You might choose to go based on a particular item. They keep Fee Brothers bitters stocked most of the time as well which is part of why I go : )

Sorry you didn't enjoy Bistro 7. I've been there twice in the past year, with groups of ~8 and 14, and really enjoyed both visits.

Both times we had the 10-course tasting menu for $65, which must be one of the better bargains in Philly dining. I wouldn't put it quite at the level of tasting menus at Blackfish, Bibou or Matyson, but I thought everything was excellent, with several unusual creative twists. The gnocchi in particular was perhaps the best I've ever had, so light they were in danger of floating away.

We were seated upstairs, which was very quiet (the group of 14 had the whole room to ourselves), so I can't comment on the decibel level downstairs.
