Barbuzzo, Fish, or Amis?

Based on recent visits to Barbuzzo and Amis (none to Fish) I would give a + to the comments regarding Barbuzzo. We all enjoyed every small plate in this buzzy venue and with good responsive service you should be in good time for your show. Barbuzzo can be a bit on the loud crowded side but well worth it. Contrary wise our Amis visit was just a notch above OK. I can not recall any item there which we found worthy of praise with the exception of nicely proportioned Campari and Soda.

Clam Pizza in Philadelphia?

I stopped at Slice this afternoon (late) being out that way and curious due to the clam pizza conversation (place is new, I've never tried). Not many single slices left but all were delicious (especially the carmelized onion and goat cheese). Clam pizza does sound weird but intriguing.

and Pho 75 is in the same shopping center as Man Phuong - but parking is a bear there on the weekends. Always full and inconsiderate drivers block the narrow lanes. Weekdays should be better, otherwise I'd follow Barry and head down towards Columbus.

While it's been a while since I've been there, I've always been more than satisfied with my meals there, as well as the hospitality. I had a very memorable anniversary meal up at one of the tables perched above the kitchen. Absolutely wonderful bronzino, but really have had everything from pasta to osso bucco there and can't make a single complaint. The complimentary bruschetta, maincotti and limoncello were always welcome and I never felt rushed. Granted as I said, it's been about a year since I've been there, but if history serves me right, then I'd happily give a rec for it.

FWIW, I am very well into my fifth decade and LOVE the happy hour at Sampan. I've never felt out of place there and have been treated royally. (OK, maybe they laugh at me behind my back after I leave, but the experience is still a great one! ;-)

I have actually had both lean and moist brisket (and also tried the burnt ends one day). The moist is very good but can be a bit fatty given the part of the brisket that it's cut from (the top part I believe). Even the lean is usually quite moist so I tend to stick with that.

There are several good, non-chaotic places in Old City to watch a game and get some tasty food and drink at the bar:

Khyber Pass Pub
Bierstube
Revolution House
Triumph Brewing Company (better for day games, they have live music most nights)
Mac's Tavern
Philadelphia Bar & Restaurant

Cant think of any places using challah off the top of my head but thinking about, doesn't Dandelion server their burger on regular bread?
Saturday morning breakfast worked out to be a smoothie from the place at Reading that is all veg juice...banana, carrot, kale, spinach, and apple, and oatmeal. Sunday morning was a different story!!! Sabrina's Cafe was fantabulous! I had an egg white omelette with apple, tomato, spinach, and avocado and a side of collard greens braised in balsamic with green onion, roasted red peppers and corn. It was ridiculously delicious!!! Thank you all again!!

Must have been an off day. I've had the pizza there, and agree with Ambler Girl, it was very crispy which is the way I like it. Was there last week for the pasta bolonese which was hearty and satisfying. Also have to say their fresh rolls are habit forming. My only complaint is the house salad - could you do something more than lettuce and dressing? C'mon, put some cheese, onion or something on there to make it worth eating.

Jfitzpatrick if you really want to go out would you consider ending up in Doylestown? I've had two very nice meals there in the past week, one at Thai Spice (elephant shaped teapot that pours out of the trunk!) and Five Guys. I know it's a chain but the Doylestown one is very good.

Joy Tsin Lau, Dim Sum, Not so hot.

Filthy carpet? They said they wouldn't change it since changing might ruin the Feng Shuei of the place. I asked that question back in the early 1990's when I went there for dim sum for the last time. Joy Tsin Lau's sister restaurant in the surburb, Golden City, is very similar. I found that out this past year after moving to live close by. Not very clean at all.

Many Chinese restaurants would not make Dim Sum in house now anymore. They buy them wholesale already made/cooked and frozen, very cheaply. In fact, that's what I'd do if I have a hankering for dim sum. Buy a few varieties, share them with a few families, take my share home, heat them up and serve. For chicken feet, I make my own.

When going out, I have switched to eating Korean, Viet, Thai, Italian or, for high-end fancy food, New American or French now. So disappointed by my "own" kind of cousine.

Bargain Alert: Uncured Corned Beef at Whole Foods

STopped by the Callowhill Whole Foods, opposite the new Barnes today.

Spotted an incredible deal on uncured corned beef: $1.99/pound. Bought two of them,

which I cooked in my crockpot. Looks like four dinners for two, plus a coupleof lunches, and

maybe some scraps for hash. Not bad for less than $12!

Not sure I liked the uncured as much as the regular stuff, but I might have overcooked

it a bit. In any case, it's still a rare bargain, especially for Whole Foods.

Go for it!

Thanks for the great suggestions. We ended up going to Route 6 and had a very nice meal. The ladies enjoyed the atmosphere, and I particulalry enjoyed the oysters. Thanks again.

We hadn't been to Chef Salvatore in quite a while. Went twice, maybe three times and felt the food didn't justify the prices they were charging. We'll have to stop by L'Angolo Blue and give it a try.

Philly Beer Week

Unless there's something that really catches your eye, I'd just search for a brewery you're interested in and head to the bar that's hosting them early. Even if the events "start" at 5pm, they'll often tap the kegs earlier in the day. As many head to the bars directly after work, many of the venues do become like mob scenes. I attended the Bell's event at City Tap Room in UC a few years ago and simply waited for 20 minutes for someone to get me a beer. Eventually I just walked out and headed back to Local 44.

Those of us who ended up going makes it a daily routine to check his website - click on Events and see if he is planning a pop-up. If yes, make reservation RIGHT AWAY without hesitation. No time to consult one's spouse or friends...significant number of people go to his dinner by himself or herself.

Shola uses only the best ingredients. He cares about the flavors and pays attention to details. If he is cooking and I can get in, I do not eat anywhere else that night.

Fishtown / Northern Liberties Restaurants

Sazon is a Venezuelan place on 10th and Spring Garden, within walking distance of the club (IMO) depending where you park. It is usually possible to find parking on Spring Garden nearby. It's a BYO. Not as cheap as you might think but the food is delicious and definitely reasonably priced for the quality. We usually bring wine or beer but i think I have seen people with vodka or tequila to mix with their fresh fruit juices.

Now I see this may have happened already. Where did you end up?

Mad Mex-Never Again

Had a very tasty dinner at Mad Mex last night! this is the first mexican restaurant I can remember that offers soy cheese - very nice since I have a dairy allergy.

We ordered the a beer and a red sangria, then chips and guac for an app. I agree with crazyspice that the chips were super salty, but I thought they went well with the guac which was a little underseasoned for my taste. The salsa that came with it was ok, nothing spectacular.

I had the Kristy's Big Sister's Red Velvet quesadilla - such a name - with soy cheese and soy sour cream. I really enjoyed it, the quesadilla had chicken, spicy spinach and zuchinni in it, with a side of salsa and sour cream. My friend ordered the grilled fish tacos, which she said were delicious. They were certainly generous, she took one taco home. I really enjoyed my quesadilla, and can't wait to go back to try the fish tacos.

Service was good, the food came quickly, and the server was very pleasant. I look forward to going back.
