I've read the reviews and we're going tonight. Are the start small plates big enough for a meal? Would I need two? That is assuming no one is sharing with me? Thanks, Linda

Some options worth checking out:
Rocco's Tacos or JoJo's Tacos for fish tacos
Coconuts is small but decent on intracoastal
Gilbert's 17th street grill for great burger or Rok Brgr but it's pricier
Las Vegas Cuban cuisine serves great basic Cuban food
Floridian on Las Olas is total breakfast dive

Miami - Boca to Naples - where can we stop for lunch?

We are flying into Miami on a sunday and driving over to Naples. Before we head west on 75, we want to meet some family for lunch that live in Boca. Is there a good place we can stop for lunch that is not too out of the way? It would be a group of 5-6 including a three yr old.

no major chains please!

Tried it twice, hoping second time would be better. Not going back. I've been to the one in the Hampton's and wasn't thrilled. Was hopeful that this would be better. We were really looking forward to a new option on Atlantic Ave. Good location and ambiance, but food is below average. Also, the menu options aren't thrilling. The bread is awful, which is always a bad sign (doesn't make sense, as you can have great bread delivered). Hope they read this and make improvements.

It's not a bad thing to freeze it, anyway -- it doesn't hurt it any, and it actually helps to relax the muscle tissues, so you don't have to pound the beejeezus out of it to make it edible.

Armed with a Groupon coupon I decided to try Pilar last night, and I have the blisters to prove it. I ordered the PEI muscle App. I'm old school and use the shell to scoop up the broth. It was soo hot I am sitting here this morning looking at the blister on my thumb! For the main I had Paella. I don't know how they served it so hot without it being a soupy mess, but it was too hot to taste. the last 1/8 of the the meal had great flavor. We also had a pasta special with shrimp which was served way too dry which when it came back out 7 minutes later was fabulous. I could not believe the size of the fish dishes around me and will have to go back to try them based on value! Service was very good!

Chow-worthy in Delray?

Max's Harvest was PERFECT. We all loved our meals..

Those pan-fried baby artichokes with basil aioli were amazing, as was the tomato-mozzarella thing. The dry-aged beef burger with homemade fries was possibly the best burger I ever had. My mother loved the chicken--I have never seen her eat like that. My husband said the pork chop was slightly bland but it was supposed to come with a sausage dressing. He swapped that out for risotto, which he's still talking about two days later, but the chop was designed to go with that sausage, which surely would have tied the dish together perfectly. The desserts (flourless chocolate cake, an apple thing, donuts) were delicious and huge.

The service was really polished, which is such a nice change. The staff changed our utensils after ever course, remembered to bring extra plates, did all those little things that make such a difference.

So here's a sincere recommendation for Max's Harvest. Thanks CFByrne for the rec.

Real Japanese sushi where are you?

NAOE is in a class by itself. However, for more reasonable, properly prepared sashimi and sushi, I recommend three places: Su-Shin Izekaya in Coral Gables, Matsuri in Coral Gables (though I dislike the crowd) and Maido in Doral. All are Japanese owned and operated, so each feels the need to conform to a certain standard. I would rather go to a 7-11 in Japan than eat at most of the others, though I am not speaking against the recommendations here.

Bad Experiences

I found myself downtown last evening near the Epic, so I thought I would try the Happy Hour at Area 31 that I had heard about. Everything was bad except for two things. It is very nice on the roof, so that is one. Upon entering, the hostess was busy, then occupied, then forgot we were waiting as the phones at her station rang incessantly. She was polite finally -- just unconcerned with doing a good job. We went outside. The waitress was not interested in divulging the Happy Hour information. I confess I was already irritated. She grudgingly said they had ceviche, french FRIES, croquettes FRIED, and calamari FRIED. In the end, we got one drink each and calamari for around $35. The $6 calamari was delicious, the second good thing. If the kitchen knew what the staff was doing at this place, they would fire everybody and start over. I will never return.

Just tried this place over the weekend and it's truly a gem! Away from the glitz and over priced menus on Atlantic Ave. Service is slow, island style! Basa cooked on a banana leaf, tostones, garbanzo fritos, fish tacos, fresh salad, sweet plantain, and Calypso Lemonade (on the very sweet side, had to mix with club soda). A must try if you are looking for some delicious island food.

Barton G the restaurant is the most creative food presentation I've seen. Lobster Pop Tarts served in a toaster, Nitrogen cocktails, all sorts of whimsical presentations. I had sushi served sno-cone style! Haven't been recently but i heard they've started using iPads for menus.

I concur with every thing you have written. As an additional comment--the staff helps each other out. We had our main server, and an expeditor that brought our meals. A different server topped our water off and another one took our plates when we were done.

If they figure out how to improve the look of the desserts, I might like it better than Leftovers. they are very close, for sure.

I went one Thursday night around 7 pm. It was busy, but not mobbed. There were definitely empty tables. Walked in and a nasty woman, older woman in her late 50s early 60s, immediately said it would be at least an hour or more wait. I asked if she was kidding and she basically ignored me. Based on her alone, I am hesitant to go back, but I walked by recently and noticed she wasn't at the hostess stand so maybe she is no longer there. Would love to hear about the food myself.

Wanted to report on our experience - we decided on Coolinary, and managed to arrive before the crowd at about 5:30. We started with the squash blossoms as an appetizer, and they were magnificent, tempura fried, stuffed with a mixture of crabmeat and cream cheese. For dinner we both ended up with Grouper Cheeks with quinoa, peppers, raisins, artichoke hearts. Not something I'd ever have picked but it was so unusual and satisfying with lots of complex flavours of spicy, sweet and tender. Actually, I ordered the fried chicken because I read raves about it and must be the only person to ever send it back (not something I do) because it honestly was to me boring and ordinary, and a bit dry.

It was such a memorable experience. Fantastic food in a lovely, modern setting, very good service. We'd gladly go again.

I was unable to check back in as my phone met an untimely demise. We had a very nice dinner at Market 17 with fabulous service and a mediocre dinner at Blue Moon with a knucklehead for a server. We have been there before and it is a has been as far as we are concerned.

We went to Rocco's Tacos for lunch and we enjoyed it. We had the table side guac and it was delicious!
