Savannah - Which of these are best?

Hello! I've been researching places to eat in Savannah for our road trip and was hoping for some insight for weekday dining. We will have a car and will be staying at the Baymont Inn but plan to visit historic downtown during the day. We only have time for 1 lunch and 1 dinner.

For BBQ: Angel's, Wiley's, Sandfly BBQ, or Rib Hut?
It seems like for ribs, Rib hut would be best. I wanted to try Wall's but it looks like they're only open Fri/Sat?

For soul food
Sisters of the New South (leaning towards this place)
Miss Wilkes - saw a lot of comments on this but we probably wont have time to wait
Masada Cafe (United House of Prayer)

When? Shrimp is in season in warmer months, oysters when the water is cold.

We don't do clambakes. That's a, ah, northern thing. What you might enjoy is a Beaufort (aka, Frogmore, aka lowcountry boil) Stew. It's easy to do on your own. If it's in winter you can do an oyster roast.

Look at Mrs. Hamby's or Charleston Bay Gourmet. Both do great stuff.

Smalls Food and Spirits, Charlotte

I had lunch at Smalls on Elizabeth Ave in Charlotte yesterday and was impressed. The space is stark and fairly small but I liked the look. I don't know if noise would be a factor if all the tables were full but we were the only people eating except a couple at the bar.

Granted this review is based on one visit and a very small food sample but the place has real promise! The menu had a bunch of things I wanted to order. Our very capable server told me that everything but the ketchup is made in house.

My lunch mate and I shared the “Mulled Pear, Arugula, Butternut Crème Fraiche, Roasted Walnuts, Spiced Citrus Vinaigrette” salad ($8.) The pear was stuffed with about a tablespoon of the crème fraiche and acted as a nice compliment to the slightly bitter arugula.

I ordered the “Smalls Steak Burger: House Ground Hanger Steak, Leidys Double Smoked Bacon, Blue Cheese, Amish Potato Roll with Pommes Frites” ($9.) The burger was delicious and cooked perfectly. The roll was soft enough to chew but firm enough to hold the juice from the meat. I’m not sure I’ve had a hanger steak burger before but it works great and you end up with a burger with real beef flavor. The accompanying fries were fabulous, crispy with herbs and grated parmesan on top of the pile.

The beer list features North Carolina brewers. I’m looking forward to trying more from the menu.

Vinnies-Asheville

Having moved to Asheville almost two years ago, I have never tried Vinnies in North Asheville.
At the suggestion of a frequent patron of Vinnies, we went Friday night.

It started with $5 Great Martinis and orders of Chicken Parm and Pasta Carbonara
Both dishes were incredible and the portions were more than ample.
What was also available was wheat pasta . A real plus

Being from The Bronx,my standards are high and Vinnies went beyond my critical expectations.
Service was friendly and competent

My only complaint was there was no shaker jar of Oregano on the table. Parm Cheese and red pepper flakes was there.

I can not wait to go back
Before Friday, I thought Nona Mia was good
Vinnies hands down is the best Italian in Asheville

You know, a lot of new restaurants have opened in Durham in the past eight years or so, and they get all the attention.
Fire Pit BBQ, Wake Forest - First Impressions

Overall, reminiscent of Durham's Q-Shack, but I think on the whole slightly better: the Fire Pit has desserts for one, and good desserts at that. I had the pulled pork (and it really was pulled; it came to the table in long strands), which had a smoky flavor, the classic pink smoke ring, and more flavor than the pork at the Q-Shack. But like most pork these days, it was too lean for my taste, so I found myself adding sauce to it (the meat came to the table completely unsauced). Speaking of sauce, they had two kinds. One was labeled "Lexington" and it was a traditional NC vinegar sauce. The other was the house sauce, and it was unusual: I think it had roasted poblano peppers in it; at any rate, it had a southwestern flavor and was a bit coarse in texture. The red slaw was unusual in that it had chopped canned tomatoes in it (I liked it anyway). The greens were fresh, although they could have used a little more salt. The mac and cheese was homemade--it was stovetop mac and cheese, however (I much prefer baked macaroni and cheese). The hushpuppies were exquisite; they were like beignets, without the powdered sugar. And they have a large selection of excellent, and I mean excellent, homemade pies, including banana cream, one of my favorites. There's corn pudding on the menu, which I'd like to go back and try.

The cooker was a big red metal box in the middle of the kitchen that vented through the ceiling and roof; I looked for it online but couldn't find it. I can't imagine it was something that the owner built himself. Speaking of the owner, I was told he was from Durham and had a hickory farm. The restaurant had a long bar that the owner made of hickory wood himself. The owner wasn't there the night I dined, which I found surprising, given that this is a new restaurant. I thought perhaps he was one of the Q-Shack guys, but I was told that the Fire Pit is the only restaurant he owns. The decor, alas, was Q-Shack-meets-Chipotle. Lots of pressed metal. The menu, a la the Q-Shack, was one of those blackboard things that is made to look like someone wrote the menu by hand in chalk but was actually printed at a print shop. Very high ceiling painted red with exposed industrial pipes. The restaurant is in a brand-new strip mall made to look like an old Main Street, just off Highway 98.

First, this board only covers the NC, SC and GA portion of your route, so if you are looking for recs in other states, you should post on the appropriate board for those states.

Second, you will get more and better recs if you can be more specific about your route, cities you are interested in, type of food you're looking for, etc.

Third, are looking for recs in Asheville and Savannah? Only those places, or those places and others in between?

Fourth, please do a search. This question has been asked and answered many times, and there are literally dozens of recs for Asheville and Savannah on here. For example:

Farmers' Market in Columbia, SC?

Thanks Capitalguy, for the plug for other markets in Columbia. The big, SC Dept of Ag. market, relocated to Hwy 321/I-77 is a big disappointment. The 701 All Local market is great, check out the web site.

Beginning in June, the 'Seeds of Hope' markets you referenced, will open all around the Columbia metro area in church parking lots, community centers, senior centers etc. Farmers (from the Low Country mostly) drive to Columbia with just picked produce. Prices can't be beat and $$ goes directly to the producers. There are also Seeds markets in Charleston Co.

The Ag dept website has a very good listing of all the markets (not only Seeds) in each county in the state. Go to www.agriculture.sc.gov and use the sites search function to look for
community-based farmers markets, then search by county. In Richland county (Columbia) there are 20 Seeds markets and 5 others, including the 701 market.

Summer/fall is much better at the big Ag Dept market but i rarely suggest folks go there. Its just not very good for smaller local producers - serves the interests of the big distributors.
The other state markets are better, especially Florence. And the Ag dept publishes a guide to the 'Certified SC markets' that you can keep or access the web as described above.
thanks and good luck

DNC barbecue sauce competition

A mustard sauce from NC and a vinegar sauce from SC? Interesting geographic choices... At least the mustard sauce is from Charlotte, so not too far from "home."

IIRC, the Obamas ate at 12 Bones while in NC for vacation a few years ago, so that choice kind of makes sense.

I also rather go to Little Pigs, but I think both Docs and Pig have their strengths. If you like fried chicken and vinegar barbecue, I do think Docs edges Little Pigs out (if anyone wants to make the long journey in West Columbia though, Shealy's may top Docs in both categories). Doc's also had a pretty good smoked chicken, which I think was on wednesdays that is worth visiting for.

Pig's mustard is the best in town though, and I think their overall buffet is better then Docs by a lot. The sides are well done and they have a wider variety that is fairly good all-around. Pig's hash is also pretty tasty, I'm not a fan of Doc's thick version.

Mirch Masala- S. Asheville - what a find

We've tried it twice, and YESSSSS! So good! I imagine this is what it's like to eat at somebody's house in India. Everything I've tried has been simple, but super, super flavorful and deep. It's not a part of town that I get to often, so I keep trying to think of excuses to find myself on that end of Asheville just so I can get Mirch Masala again. The folks that run it are really nice, too. Besides, you can round out your meal with a killer custard from Cin-Tom's! I'm kind of surprised to not see more chatter about it on here....

Thanks for all the replies.

We had an earlier appointment at Replacements (selling china) and it took longer than anticipated. By the time we were done we would have had about 10 min. at SECCA...next time!
Looking forward to exploring the area more.
