Can you get eastern North Carolina style bbq and cole slaw anywhere in Atlanta?

The defining characteristic of eastern NC style isn't the texture or whether its presauced. (virtually all NC bbq is chopped fairly fine, sometime almost pulverized, and presauced, although in the western part of the state it is also traditionally available "coarse" chopped or sliced) The defining characteristics of eastern style is (1) that it is whole hog, and (2) the sauce, which is usually just vinegar, red pepper flakes or dried chili flakes, salt, pepper and maybe a little brown sugar. Western or Lexington style uses only the shoulders, and the sauce, while very similar, contains a small amount of ketchup or tomato sauce. It is still very thin, however. Both styles are usually presauced and also usually accompanied by an additional cup of sauce (or "dip" in the west).

I'd be shocked if Pig 'n Chik has true eastern style sauce, but they well might.

Would love to see this post revived - will be spending 24 hours in Atlanta with my 10 yr. old son in July. He too is an adventurous eater (eats everything from sushi to 'Q) and gets frustrated with typical "Kids Menu" fare (frozen pizza, mac & cheese, etc). We are only in town for 24 hours & plan on visiting the aquarium as our main thing to do. Looking for breakfast & lunch spots within walking distance in that area. Also a reco for dinner close to (or at?) the airport would be great!

Oh! You know some place I just remembered that's really good in Fayetteville? Tim's Country Kitchen! That place is fantastic!

They serve authentic Southern food done better than almost any other Southern restaurant I've ever been to, which is pretty impressive considering it's a buffet. Attention is given to every single food item they serve to make sure everything is seasoned cooked properly. Every thing they serve tastes just like it would if you were at someone's house eating their home cooking. The food is consistently great as well.

This review sums up Tim's perfectly:

So, the next time you're in Fayetteville, I would definitely check out Tim's Country Kitchen.

Atlanta weekend - mostly Buckhead

After researching the Chowhound boards, a friend and I had a really nice weekend in Atlanta. I'm a pescatarian, and she eats everything, and we stayed in Buckhead. Friday night we drove by Eclipse di Luna, but it was wildly packed at 8:30. Instead, we ended up at Southern Art Kitchen; the highlight was the fried pickled green tomatoes, with a nice jalapeno jelly. She had a selection from the ham bar, and we split a salad too, which featured some very good beets, plus pecans and other things. The cocktails were ok, but not amazing. For dessert we shared the bourbon ice cream - delicious.

On Sat we went to the Inman Park festival, and had a pleasant lunch at Across the Street. Not amazing Mexican food, but well-executed, friendly service, funky decor, and a nice patio. Wandered around a lot at the festival, but no amazing food trucks really caught our eye. Sat night we went to JCT kitchen. Friend had the duck liver mousse (tried to encourage her to get the angry mussels) and shrimp & grits. I had the vegetable plate, which was very tasty, but more stew-like than I had expected. For dessert, the doughnuts w/ meyer lemon filling were fabulous. Note to those who care - this place is seriously loud! Cocktails were better than the night before.

Sunday we grabbed coffee and baked goods near our hotel, and after a trip to the Atlanta History Center, went to Atlantic Station. Due to very few options there, we ended up @ the Yard House - I had no idea it was a chain until we were seated and looking @ the menu. Once again, it was a pleasant outdoor patio, and service was fine. I ordered tacos, and we split a too fussy salad.

Overall it was a nice visit, but plenty of options left for a return trip!

We love 5 Seasons Brewing Co. At Roswell and 285. Sounds/looks like just a bar, but food is seasonal and very good. Beer is great too! You also have Alons right across the street from the mall for gourmet goodies, sandwiches, etc. Great lunch spot. Several breakfast spots near Roswell and Hammond: Flying Biscuit is my fav, but J. Christophers has a cute, quiet patio when weather is nice.

Two great dinners in Buckhead/Hal's and Pricci's

Was in town for a convention last week and while I have flown through Atlanta many times, this was the first time it was my destination. We had two incredible meals. One at Hal's and the other at Pricci's.

My husband can not stop talking about Hal's lobster bisque filled with big chunks of lobster. The filet is a 12 oz and absolutely cooked to perfection. Hal was reared in New Orleans and knows good food and certainly provides it for his Buckhead clientel.

I could have made a meal on the red sauce and melted fontina cheese that is served with the
in-house crafted breads at Pricci. I love lasagnas and had one of the best there.

Two great spots.

best fish and chips in ATL

Having become addicted to fish and chips over years of business travel to the UK, I have tried a lot of offerings around town, and I believe the best is at Miller's Ale House just off 400 on Mansell Rd. You get a huge single fish fillet, properly battered and fried. This is often a lunch special (quite the good deal). At dinner, you get a couple of sad hush pupplies. Ignore them. I recently had the Rose & Crown version...smaller fillets so you get more breading/less fish. It was OK. Taco Mac changed their product about a year ago, and although it's a few smaller fillets, it's usually not bad. But Miller's is delicious and the closest I've had to authentic in the US.

I currently live in Peachtree City, have lived in this area all my life, and have traveled to and eaten in France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, and Austria (as well as other countries in other continents, but just mentioned the European countries as they relate specifically to you). I am happy to give you suggestions to places anywhere from here to really anywhere in Georgia in addition to these if you'd like. Here are some of my very favorites:

Linger Longer, Gaby's by the Lake, Georgia's Bistro, and the Chiminea Dinner at The Ritz-Carlton Lodge at Reynold's Plantation (the phenomenal food, decor, and service as well as overall value make these more than well worth the 1 hour 45 minute drive): http://www.ritzcarlton.com/en/Properties/ReynoldsPlantation/Dining/Default.htm

City Cafe and Bakery in Fayetteville, GA (fantastic food and decor - sit on their wonderful patio): http://www.citycafeandbakery.com/index.htm

Taqueria Iztaccihuatl (best authentic Mexican restaurant in Georgia): http://www.yelp.com/biz/taqueria-iztaccihuatl-fairburn and http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/9/806415/restaurant/Atlanta/Taqueria-Iztaccihuatl-Fairburn

Noteworthy dinner spots in Buford, GA near Lake Lanier?

I'm staying at the Lake Lanier Resort in Buford this weekend, but I'm hoping to sneak away for a meal somewhere outside of the resort.
Any suggestions for good, unique food in the area? I'm looking for something on the cheaper, less fancy side of the spectrum. Something with good local character / flavor that this NYer can't get up north. Thanks!

We hadn't been to The Brake Pad in College Park in a long time until just the other day. Didn't eat, but it still has a great setup if the weather's nice. Think basic pub food and a small-but-decent beer list.

Great new addition to Decatur--No. 246 for Italian

246 falls under the "Cal-Ital" category quothe one of their wine reps. At the end of last year they had planned on making their own pasta but hadn't purchased machine yet. I think the best thing there is the wine list, food second. I do love getting the cheese plate and enjoying the Italian dessert wine selection.

Indian in Gwinnett/I-85?

THANKS everyone. We ended up being short on time so went to Naan N Curry. We enjoyed the food and they liked the friendly atmosphere.

There are so many good suggestions on this thread that I hope to be able to try a bunch and learn more about the variations on food from this region.

Thank you to all who responded and I really appreciate the reasons "why" you like one place over another. (Sorry it took so long to get back.)

Indian Redux

I really want to go because it's the cuisine of Kerala, which you don't find too often in Indian restaurants, so I want to see if I can tell the difference. I have a friend from Kerala and she was really excited about this place. Plus, there was a cooking class with the chef/owner on Scoutmob that I'm considering doing too.

Yes, Hong's is gone. It's been many years since I've tried Nhu Y and at the time I wasn't too big a fan. Not that they were bad, but that there were better options around. Actually, years ago we did a fun banh mi taste off. Blissful Glutton documented it and it's still on her blog site (http://blissfulglutton.com/where-can-you-get-best-banh-mi-in-atlanta/).
