STL general area (wide net) question

OK this is awkward, me, Mr. Know-it-all, Mr. I-Have-an-Opinion, has a question:

mom's 80th b-day coming up, probably lunch, she prefers simply (directly?) made food, I say no chains, end of June, start of July. a shaded patio and one with a view would be nice. a winery would be cool (but not in Hermann - no offense but it's sort of a PITA to go there).

geography: Washington to 270-ish, Lindbergh at most, not too far off of 44.

I looked at American Bounty in Washington and that's definitely an idea, so if somebody knows of a comparable place with a stunning terrace on a bluff and a decent menu to suggest I would, well I'd owe ya!

anything on the meramac? too bad the Bridgehead is now a visitor's center.

Recs for Tulsa and Oklahoma City?

Tulsa is full of fine dining options. My favorites at the moment are all run by Justin Thompson. Prhyme, Juniper, and the newly open Tavolo. Here's a article that lists 10 favorite dishes. It's useful because it also lists 10 amazing restaurants, all of which merit a visit (except for Oui3, which is now closed).

Two Great Burgers in StL -- O'Connell's and Fatted Calf

Yes, Fatted Calf is gone for good. It was once a small national chain in larger cities. I thought the new burger place in Clayton pretty good. Five Star has been open at least six months or more, Fatted Calf has closed more recently, I'm pretty sure.

My go to places for great burgers:
Price no object: Blood and Sand
$10 and under: Sassy Jacs (Soulard) - great meat, toasted brioche bun
O'Connell's Pub, Blueberry Hill

In between: Late night menu at Five Bistro on The Hill

LA Hound Looking for Best BBQ in KC

Funny we're talking about Arthur Bryant's. I went through three states and 27 BBQ joints in 10 days a while back, and AB was the worst. Hands down. And rude. I mean, really rude -- and I have a thick skin. Remember the soup Nazi? Well, that's how they behaved. Served me some dry, nasty BBQ right on a plastic cafeteria tray. I think I was supposed to pick up a plate before giving him the tray. Now, LC's (on the Blue Highway) is a dump but great folks and good BBQ. Best food I had was actually downtown, at Danny Edward's "eat it and beat it." Don't know if its still there.
Pics are Bryant's, Edwards, and The Man, LC.

Lincoln- Wine/ Liquor "superstore"?

A quick followup after a half year of research. Killer killer table wine deals at trader joes. I'm saving huge money over Denver liquor store prices. TJs even better than I remembered from AZ. And for fancier wine Meyers is a treasure for sure. Very pleased.

For large bottle gin and vodka I just shop around and buy when I see cheap. I'm doing good w Vodka. Hit miss with gin. The Still tends to "go low" most frequently. I have found Beefeater and Brokers around 29$ which is comparable to Denver. And hyvee has Sapphire right now for 32 which is very fair. For scotch I just plan on not drinking it very often and then carrying back from Colorado when I visit. its a bad expensive habit anyway! But God I love, love, those islay malts!

Chinese food in St. Louis

It was still open as of last summer when we moved away from STL!

I have friends who do something even more exciting at that restaurant: They bring a bunch of raw ingredients (fresh fish, meats, veg, etc.), and he makes a custom meal out of it for them!

We never had the courage to try this, but I have heard this from multiple friends. His other major specialty is soy braised offal, which is a really popular street food that my wife loves, and that's typically what we have there - simple enough to point in the display case.

Good luck and enjoy!

Pine and Bamboo Dim Sum was great, I liked it. Lots of Chinese families.
For Bo Lings or Kin Lin (!, I know, I have lots of Chinese students who eat there, though!)
ask for the Chinese menu and get a different "flavor" of dishes.
Princess Garden on Wornall is a KC classic with a loyal following- I think they have Chinese menu, too. I like their salt and pepper tofu, Singapore noodles, and their soups are good.

Alpenhorn Gasthaus - Hermann, Missouri

Not sure about weekday lunches, Lisa. We live about 75 minutes from Hermann, so it's a "special trip" when we go. Have heard Wings a Blazin' IS good, although have not been there. There's a good Texas BBQ place on Schiller Street called Montague's, but I think it is only open Wed. - Sat. There's Simon's on the Waterfront, which is decent, and Black Walnut Bistro, but have never been to it. There's also Sharp's Corner Tavern downtown for greasy burgers and pizza. There's also Rivertown Cafe or something like that, and Downtown Deli. Don't know if the Vintage Restaurant at Stone Hill serves lunch or not. Oh yes, there's The Cottage a little ways out of town east that's very good, and I think they still serve lunch. I would just look at some different websites about dining in Hermann for lunch and see what grabs you. Do some exploring and you'll wind up with way more experience than I do for Hermann lunch. Enjoy, and if you find someplace worth mentioning, do post about it. Good luck!

Oklahoma City and environs

Well, the best laid plans...
Arrived too late the first night for dinner. Nothing open except McDonald's. We shared an apple we'd brought with us.
Dinner the next night was at Montana Mike's in El Reno where friends wanted to eat. It was ok for what it was.
Lunch the next day was an onion burger from Robert's Grill. I'd never had one and was a little skeptical, but it was so very wonderful! Robert's is truly a greasy spoon and I nearly walked out as soon as I walked in, but they were extremely nice and I was immediately at ease. Definitely would recommend it if you're looking for an onion burger!
Dinner that night was at Nachitos in Minco, OK, a recommendation from a local. Complimentary chips, queso and salsa were very good. The waitress was friendly. The mushroom/spinach enchiladas were great. Rice and beans all good. The chili relleno was horrible. But, if you find yourself near Minco, OK, it's a good place to eat.

They are small with great owners and customer service. Check out their website at Seafoodthyme.com and they are on Facebook at www.facebook.com/seafoodthyme. They have fantastic recipes that they add as well. They send emails to advise what they have in fresh or coming in each week. Hope you check it out and tell all your friends!
Bettendorf, Iowa casino trip!

Close to you is Trattoria Tiramasu, which is a decent Italian place. The other place that comes to mind is Lunardi's in Davenport. Both are long running places, so expect that "1950s/1960s American Italian" experience with the kind of food you'll get at both.

Probably the best steak is Bass Streak Chop House, which also has seafood. Be prepared to pay though.

My favorite place is probably Le Figaro in Rock Island. It's supremely quiet, the French food is excellent, and you can get French Table Service on the dinners for two most nights.

A side trip to Whitey's Ice Cream is worth your time if you like Shakes or Malts. Some of the best shakes I've tried. There are a number of locations.

Excellent, but pricey is Red Crow. It's a Fusion style restaurant. Probably the best quality food in the Quad Cities.

Another good breakfast spot is Riefe's. There is almost no ambiance, but the food is good and the service is generally excellent. Pretty modestly priced as well.

For breakfast there's also City Limits in Rock Island, which has good food, but be prepared to wait. They recently added table space, but did not increase the size of the kitchen so service can be slow at peak times.

Finally, slightly out of your range is the town of LeClaire, which is where the History Channel show American Pickers is based. If you're planning on seeing the Picker's store, one of the best restaurants in the area is there. Steventons has an excellent Fusion style menu that leans towards seafood and has the most scenic overlook of the Mississippi River I'm aware of. They also have an excellent patio, but I've always been there during the winter when I can't take advantage of it. :(

If you're looking for something different, or something else, don't hesitate to ask.
