Thanks for the report. It's good to hear you enjoyed it.

It's one of only a handful of non-chain restos out this way so we like to frequent it. Also, at least two places have already failed in that location; I would hate for this one to have the same fate.

I'm never sure what is meant by "walking distance." Four blocks? A mile?

Top of mind is Haute Dish. It's about a 10 minute walk according to Google maps. A little beyond that is The Bachelor Farmer (Sunday only). Both are worth the walk.

Hell's Kitchen best meal is breakfast. Try the porridge. Try to ignore the kitsch.

Who has best scones in Twins Cities

Thanks for posting this because when I first read this yesterday I thought maybe I was missing something or misread the word scone.

I was always taught that traditional English scones were very close to the American biscuit (just a tiny bit sweeter with a small amount of sugar in the dough) - intended to be lighter and doused with jam and clotted cream. The American monstrosities I see everywhere are far too sweet and dense and not conducive to jam or cream. I'm not saying they are bad necessarily, they're just not a proper scone.

So this begs the question to the OP - just where did you find this proper scone?

Looking for a Restaurant for Large Party of 50 budget of 20-30$

If your group is okay with quote-unquote "non-mainstream" food, you probably would have mentioned it, but just in case...

Last summer, I arranged a catered birthday party with WONDERFUL food from Holy Land deli in NE Minneapolis that was under $20/person - and that's the total price, not the per-entree price (I suspect some of the other recs are assuming entree not total). Holy Land has a large room that could easily accommodate your group for that price, but it would be a buffet - not table service - in a very bare-bones environment. But their Egyptian/Middle-Eastern food is great. If that appeals, check 'em out!

Among the best brats I've had in the TC are the Surly beer brats at Oxendale Market on 34th Ave at 50th St. in South MPLS. Great taste, and around $4.99 a pound. IMO, can't beat the price and quality.

Epi - exactly. Thanks. I love the way it looks, but prefer a baguette for eating...less crust. A personal preference. I will say, though, if you are doing a dinner party and plunk your bread in the middle of the table, this is a great centerpiece.

Dinner in the Loop During Twins Games

I would say 7:30 would better. I spent a number of years in Boston going to restaurants right near Fenway park about 30 minutes after the ballgame started and it was the best time to go there. I think getting in, etc would be about the same (although I have not been to Bar La Grassa specifically in this situation), but in general, I think it is better to arrive at restaurants just after the craziness is over rather than as all of the craziness is leaving. It makes for a more peaceful and enjoyable experience for me.

The juicy nookie (with bacon...) was certainly delicious, but I think the hype may have set my expectations unreasonably high.

I'm honestly not sure I could pick a favorite between the nook or convention grill or that "grinder" I had at Jimmy's.

Agonizing over choices like this qualifies as "one of those good problems" :)
