San Diego foodie moving to Bowling Green, Ohio

I have enjoyed several very good meals at Revolver, in Findlay. It is ~40 mins south.

When visiting friends in Toledo, we always end up at Mancy's Blue Water Grill. Toledo has a large Muslim population, so I expect that you will have a selection of middle eastern and med cuisines.

I expect that the choices in in BG will be mostly franchised, and target the BGSU student body and those traveling I-75.

If you happen to find yourself in Lima, consider visiting Kewpee burger ...

Spend a bit of time with Google, looking for sites the specialize in roadside stands for fruits, berries and veggies. I expect you may find a few pick-your-own farms. Perhaps your new co-workers can provide tips.

Otherwise, driving will be your new hobby. New username? ilovetodriveforfood

If you want a great slice of old Detroit, walk over to the Penobscot Building, go down to the basement, and try the Caucus Club. Old-school power lunches galore. Also open for dinner, but I've never tried it.

Thanks Everyone for the great suggestions. Personally, I love Good Girls Go to Paris, but it's not really the atmosphere I'm looking for. We're up in the between Le Petite Zinc if they have crepes on the menu that night, if not, we'll try What Crepe. I'm in Royal Oak all the time and had no idea they were there. I'll report back. Thanks again

Double decker sandwiches in Cinncinati?

I have to agree about the Dead Squirrel. It's edible but not great. I'm just not a huge fan of the double decker Cincy sandwiches. And you were only 5 minutes away from the best BBQ (Jim Dandy's off of Sharon Rd.) or Mexican (Taqueria Mercado on Rte. 4) in the region.

What's in Busken's maple sticks?

I moved from the Cincinnati area years ago but am generally able to satisfy my nostalgic cravings with homemade 3-ways, bottled Montgomery Inn sauce, and Graeter's at my local Whole Foods.

But I have fond memories of the donuts & pastries from Busken and nothing really matches them.

The trouble is, I have no idea how to describe that cream that's inside their maple sticks. It's totally unique. Anyone know what it's called or what it's made from?

my guess is that levan either owns the property (his sweet georgia brown used to be in the space - deep fried lobster tails - good god !?!) or he owes some serious back rent from when he occupied the space and convinced the owner that this would be a way of working off the debt (since nobody else can succeed in the spot despite reasonable foot traffic from the casino/greektown).

They have a "Little Daddy's Parthenon" on Northwestern Highway.

I used to go to B.D. Parthenon, but have been going to the Uptown Parthenon since its closure. It's on Orchard Lake Road between Pontiac Trail and Lone Pine Road..

Good gyro's.

You couldn't drag me to BBV or Green Well (have had too many terrible meals at both); I guess the third time is the charm for this group. Grove also recently started opening on Sundays. Instead of the regular menu, it's a three (all savory) course prix-fixe with lots of options for $28, wine with each course for an additional $12. Took my mother and grandmother yesterday for Mother's Day and had a great meal.

Roost - Dayton OH

Roost, on 5th St near Wayne, in the Oregon district, describes itself as modern Italian. We stopped in last night and sat outside on the patio. Decent fairly priced wine list; ordered a Kermit Lynch Corbieres rose for $26. Crusty warm rolls and olive oil with garlic and balsamic were good. The antipasti specials included mussels with white wine, swiss chard, garlic chips, and a deep-fried soft shell crab on greans with aioli. We ordered both, and when the mussels were served, thought "oh no" because they didn't smell fresh. I tried one, and the taste of ammonia was evident, so we politely asked our server to please remove the bowl. This was the only glitch of the evening, though.

The softshell crab was fresh and well cooked, and we happily devoured it. Three of us shared the pasta carbonara and the veggie pasta special, cappellini with trumpet mushrooms and found both very good (and I'm VERY picky about pasta, legacy of an Italian momma). We also shared two desserts, the sorbet served in fruit (lemon, and wonderful), and a special with vanilla gelato, cherries, and whipped cream.

Service was excellent, the space was nice, especially on a beautiful night. We'll be back!

:-) Well, again, in all fairness the pan fried udon noodles were very yummy--I'd get those with frequency if I lived closer to Kitchen Hanzo. Next time I go I will start with some cold marinated mushrooms with grated daikon, or the skewers of smelt or mackerel, and then I might get a nabe (Japanese version hot pot).

Sorry about photographing half-eaten dishes, but I prefer to take pictures only during opportunities where nobody is looking.

Yes: Marotta's pizza (CLE)

Had Marotta's pizza for the first time tonight. Yes. This is the best pizza I've had in Cleveland *yet*. (Note the yet--perhaps the best is really yet to come.) Picked up a large, plain (they call it "traditionale") pie. Saw the pizza guy making others with care. Properly chewy crust, spot-on sauce, the right type/amount of cheese. Very New Yorkish-style. If I was to quibble, I might say the crust could have been crispier. But really, I'd have to try it again to make sure.

For comparison's sake: My runner-up Cleveland pizza is Vincenza's, followed by Flour (for fancy pizza).

While dreaming of tube steaks from Ry...ski's in Rogers City, GoatGolfer suggested
that I check-out Nithsches in Shelby Township.

Saturday, I made the drive ... and bought two of most every tube steak and a few chops.

My initial report:

Smoked kielbasa: Very good. Coarse grind. Not quite a smokey/flavorful as I remember Ry...ski's.
Porkchops: Ditto.

I really need to-do a "Pepsi Challenge" style comparison ... which means at least one more trip
to Rogers City.

Central Wisconsin, Chowishness in General

In case anyone has not heard, Christian of Christian's Bistro is opening a new place in downtown SP called "Father Fats". It features small plates, is multi-ethnic in approach, will not be open for lunch, but will serve Sunday brunch. Supposed to open this month.

Also lunch at Christian's Bistro was EXCELLENT today. We shared a fried green tomato salad with shrimp, shredded spinach and roumelade sauce as an appy. I had creole beef tips with a fried grit cake with melted cheese inside it. My wife had a flounder poor boy. There is no food like this withing 100 miles. Wonderful!

You are right - reservations for dinner are a must - especially for non-guests. They can usually accomidate drop ins for breakfast and dinner with little problem. The dining room is small - probably only seats about 30. Also, it's Greenberg not Greenbberg. Typings not my best skill.

Healthy Food in Flint?

> French Laundry ... our special meal

Beware that it is "noisy" ... waaay too many of the trendy/industrial hard surfaces.

If you're willing to drive to Fenton; then I suspect that you may consider venturing to Holly. The
Holly Hotel is a restaurant, not a hotel. <g> They do a good job in the dining room. They
routinely have theme'd menus on many weekends. Checkout their website; perhaps you'll
find something "special".

Halo Burger is a Flint-based burger chain. I prefer them to McD, BK, Wendy's.

Desi Pizza in Canton, MI

Interesting you should bring up Namaste's chilli chicken. There's really nothing else like it in the metro area. I've ordered chilli chicken from every--believe me, EVERY--Indian restaurant in metro Detroit that has it on their menu. No one else makes it like Namaste; Athidhi's is the closest. Most places make chilli chicken with too much soy sauce and/or too much vinegar, so the flavor ends up being like crappy Chinese take-out. Namaste makes it Keralan-style, meaning it's drier, more aromatic, less soy-saucey and gelatinous.

Neehee's Indo-Chinese dishes are horrid, so it's not surprising their chilli chicken pizza failed to impress.

It appears that Shawn Randazzo want to carve his own niche in the metro pizza market.

As far as I've been able to tell, his Cloverleaf "franchise" stores always did well. So it's not a business rescue plan he's attempting..

Waukesha County, WI - Hounds on the move

I have been to Key Westconsin twice. I wasn't terribly impressed with my lunch there. I had mini lobster rolls and they were unimpressive (needed some acid, maybe a squeeze of lemon juice) and the bun was kind of stale. The the crab cake sliders were overpowered by the pretzel roll buns. Neither was terrible but a little extra effort and ingredient selection would have yielded better results. The crab cakes would have worked well with a Sweet Hawaiian dinner roll bun or a mini brioche and some spicier aioli.

However I loved brunch there. I had the lobster Benedict too and it is really good. Having breakfast and one of their great Bloody Marys during Farmers Market season is one of the best dining experiences in Waukesha.

i had dinner at moro's years ago and it was pretty good. i have been there for lunch about four times with a customer that likes to go there. his words: "if you like garlic, you'll love moro's."

its a small, old school room witrh a dark, clubby feel to it. white linen table cloths and startched napkins. the waiters are all in black tux's. service is prompt and professional and a little abrupt - take your order, bring your food no small talk or kibitzing - down to business. there is also some show involved - tableside salad preparation; some entrees & desets at dinner, too. the food is good. tom moro is a seasoned pro. the food is not over the top great, but solid. personally i like roma's house salad, veal, and pasta with meat sauce a little better, but i would not hesitate to order it here. the soups are pretty good, too, and usually something more adventurous than your basic minestrone. worth checking out.

Oscoda Michigan area eats?

+1 for both Tait's and Wiltse's. We ate at Tait's this past New Year's Eve and were pretty happy. Salad actually made from non-iceberg greens...big plus up north. Wiltse's has some good house brewed beers, decent bar-type food.

We like Mama's Place for breakfast...linoleum floors, fake wood, waitress calls you "hon" kind of place. Not gourmet but good for the basics.

If you're there in the summer, the Oscoda Farmer's Market is on Wednesdays and is totally worth a visit.

Donutville USA! Yes. The plain "stick" donut. Simple, nutmeggy, crisp crust, sugar glaze. Before smoking was banned (used to be hazy in there), the donuts had a little extra je ne sais quoi. The jelly-filled ones suck, though.

We dug a 1/2 bag full of ramps last week in Lewiston area and found 2" black morels. With the rain the last few days and warm weather, you all should head north. Have never found either in this area but we do not comb the woods around here. Somebody offered a foraging trip near AA last year, I think. We grill our ramps and also make biscuits, using bulbs, stems and leaves.
