ivandwu - thanks! That is interesting info about KT's Palette since we are visiting DEN to see the YSL exhibit in the first place. Wouldn't have thought that there would be a prix fixe menu in a museum - odd! but KT's name seems to be all over DEN and gets high marks. So that could be an option too.

Heard good things about the Pullman in Glenwood: http://www.thepullmangws.com/ but never eaten there.

St. George is kind of a culinary wasteland (or was last time I was there, 3 years ago), mostly chain restaurants. There was a decent thai place there, I don't recall the name (but a search will probably come up with it, can't imagine too many thai places there ;-).

best tacos on south federal/denver....opinions?

im taking a survey as to people's opinion of the best tacos on south federal in denver. im talking from, say, alameda and federal on down to hampden. there are a TON of choices between there. so far im liking tacos junior, but if theres an absolute must try im missing i would like to know. of course if theres a place that you love thats slightly north or south of these parameters, or on alameda/mississippi/evans, etc near federal, feel free to include. but roughly that area between alameda and hampden.

as far as tortas, i already know my favorite.....las tortugas on alameda and tejon. great tortas, and the jugos frescos put it over the top.

South Federal Ave. in Denver is a haven of Chinese and Vietnamese places, but there is no authentic Sichuan.

Lao Wang Noodle House is Taiwanese; the cuisine is completely different from Sichuanese.

The only place I've ever had authentic Sichuan in Denver are China Jade and Ocean Forest Cafe (which is closed). China Jade has a couple solid Sichuan dishes on their menu, but not enough to made the drive worth it except very infrequently.

All kinds of great eats.

Local slow food gems include Tin Angel, Pago, Copper Onion. The Pago folks have recently opened Finca, and the Copper Onion chef has opened Plum Alley. Have not been to either, but the former's menu looks killer and the latter has been getting raves.

Ethnic must-go's are Red Iguana for the best Mex for hundreds of miles and Mazza (9th and 9th location is bigger and groovier) for stunningly good Middle Eastern.

ok i just skimmed ur post and i see u do like the mountains. so camping in eleven mile canyon is cool and not as far as black canyon. of course theirs deckers for a day trip not far from denver. there are some great 4x4 roads north of the idaho springs area that go up to nice hikes to mountain lakes. cottonwood pass over to the taylor river/almont area and kebler pass/mclure to crested butte are great too. and i really love the glenwood springs/basalt/aspen area too. yes black canyon is amazing but its a long ways so there are some suggestions if u dont want to drive as far.

if u end up back here and are at the tech center again theres also a good mongolian bbq on east arapaho east of quebec. yes as someone said there are tons of strip malls, but there are some good places in those strip malls. indias castle is in a strip mall with in a huge home depot parking lot, but u walk in there and its like walking into another world. the lighting, the decor, indian music playing......and great food! the lunch buffet is good, but i prefer going there for dinner. they have great tikka masala which is not on their lunch buffet. cookinitup (formerly known as cookin my ass off)

Thai Ingredients in Denver - where to buy?

i was also going to suggest far east center. little saigon market is great. its mostly viet, but has plenty of thai ingredients. when u walk in, go straight, past the check out counter, and then go right into the last row. back in there u will find lots of cooking utensils. if u are looking for good seafood, check out tri-ocean market which is on federal just south of mississippi, same side of the street as far east center (west side). they also have some thai ingredients in their small produce section, like lemon grass, kafir lime leaves and thai basil. dont remember if they have galangal but they might. last time i was there i had to ask for the lemon grass cuz it wasnt out there, but they did have it. good prices on seafood too and lots of live choices. they even have live conch, which is amazing since i heard a chef of "top chef" say he never used live conch since it was unavailable in the states. really great live oysters. i buy a good portion of my seafood there. both of these stores have frozen coconut milk too, which i think is better than canned.

I haven't been to the Ale House in Denver, but I've been to the one in Grand Junction (same owners) and it was forgettable. Definitely not Chow-worthy food - it's your basic brewpub fare, burgers and burritos and pizzas made with Sysco-quality ingredients and indifferently prepared. Which is fine sometimes - the burger was tasty enough and it hit the spot while on a road trip with two guys that aren't particularly into food - but not a place I'd seek out if you're looking for better-than-average food and drink.

We have been eating at La Cueva on E Colfax for as long as they've been open. Before that at La Bonita for which the Nunez's cooked and ran the floor. They use a spice or herb that I've not tasted at any other Mexican restaurant. It's mostly in the beef and chicken in the taco's and enchiladas and sauce

I am going to visit my girlfriend in Denver this weekend and would love some advice on where to eat. She is new to the city and--here's the real catch--doesn't have a car, so it would be need to be near the Capitol Hill neighborhood where she lives. We usually enjoy grubby little ethnic places, especially Mexican, Vietnamese, or Middle Eastern, but wouldn't mind somewhere nicer for dinner or brunch.
Cafe Monet in Parker is a Monument that should be Experienced

Café Monet is a monument to The Way We Were Eating French/Italian inthe USA in the 1970’s or 60’s (Cafe Monet, 10471 S. Parker Rd. #1, Parker, CO 80134, tel. 303-840-0004 web: www.cafemonetinparker.com). And we were told that there are patrons who havebeen dining at Café Monet once a week for 30 years (even though it’s only beenopen since 1996). Homa Bazyar is the head chef and she knows how to please her guests. Our server was young but spoke authoritatively on Everything Café Monet. The décor is Very Homey with cupboards of tea cups, lots of souvenirs from France and a warm, inviting air. There are booths on one side of the restaurant with tables in the middle. On the other side of the restaurant is a long bar, tables and Mohammad Bazyar’s recline-o-lounger. We sat at a table on the other side of the restaurant. There were many guests at 6 p.m. when we arrived—most over 60 yrs. old. The service was excellent and the portions were huge. All entrées include the soup de jour (which was a chicken curry and good), a green salad (crunchy and tasty with the dressing of our choice) and are garnished with vegetables, rice and potatoes. Dimitri had the the “Dartois de Fruits de la Mer ($17.95): delicate seafood wrapped and baked in puff pastry, topped with white wine sauceand shrimp”. Dimitri liked his dish and particularly liked the white wine sauce. Audre had the “Trout Almondine ($17.95) native trout grilled in lemon butter and covered with slivered almonds.” Audre said it was very dry. The accompaniments were very good and we were too stuffed to have any of Homa’s desserts. We spent $38.70 plus tip and we recommend that you experience this restaurant. It is one of a dying breed.

Yanni’s was recommended to us by friends who have some Greek heritage (Yanni's 5425 Landmark Place, Unit 109, Greenwood Village, CO 80111, tel. 303-692-0404). We went expecting really good food and we were disappointed. The restaurant is in a shopping center and is bright with good modern art on the walls. Our server, Michelle was good. Yanni came to the table to give us a little cup of ouzo and welcome us. He said he knew our Greek friends. His business partner, Carl, also greeted us. We had been told that the Sunday special lamb was the dish to have. We shared one appetizer combo plate ($16.95) that was disappointing—mostly rubbery fried calamari. Then we shared one “BBQ Lamb, spit-roasted Colorado grown leg of lamb served with a medley of roast vegetables” ($19.95). Although we could see the grill and spit where the lamb was cooked we were not impressed with the result. It lacked taste. The vegetables were very good, however. Dimitri had a retsina with the lamb ($8.50) and we ordered a rice pudding for dessert ($4.95). It was vanilla pudding with some hard rice floating in it. We took one taste and left the rest. We spent $54 plus tip and left the restaurant shaking our heads.

Trying to figure out which is the best for Chau Chau (Chow Chow) (fried noodles) and Mo Mo (dumplings). We are eating indian later that night so not too huge on the Indian food many of these types of restaurants serve.

Looks like Cafe Shambala, House of Tibet, and Himalayan Kitchen are our choices. It will be a lunch break from sightseeing.

Thanks for the recommendations. We wound up at the Shamrock Brewing Company in Pueblo. Can't report on the beer, since we had several hours' driving to go, but the food was pretty good. I had a buffalo burger that had some sort of meatloaf-y seasoning. My only complaint is that I asked for medium rare and it was cold and raw in the middle -- however, it was so big that I didn't need to eat the middle anyway. My friend liked her regular burger (cooked medium). Service was very friendly.

On that weekend you might want to stay away from downtown, unless you think your teen would really enjoy the madhouse. (I would have at that age.) Zolo Grill is a favorite of ours and although there will still be a wait, it's a little less zany.

If you do want to stay downtown, I generally like Centro.

If you want slightly more upscale and don't mind driving 20 minutes out of town, we've been very happy at Colterra. The semi-rural atmosphere is a nice change, too.

I'm so glad you had a good experience!

I really need to go there more often. I fell in love with Good Karma after the waiter asked how spicy I wanted my curry. When I said "mild" he didn't rolls his eyes or fall on the floor laughing. He even brought me a sample to taste to ensure it was what I wanted! :-) Awesome.

The Pullman in Glenwood Springs was Excellent

We had heard good things about this restaurant (The Pullman, 330 7th Street, Glenwood Springs, CO 81601, tel. 970-230-9234, e-mail: eat@thepullmangws.com, web: www.thepullman.com) from friends and on the Chow website. It has been open a little more than a year and we loved it! We went for a late lunch after biking the (newly re-opened) Glenwood Springs Recreation Trail in April 2012. Our server, Jesse was knowledgeable and patient with all of our questions about ingredients. Instead of a main, we shared 2 snacks, 3 small dishes and one dessert. The first snack to arrive was “Truffle housemade pork rinds” ($4). They were sizzling when the basket arrived and were truly crunchy and tasty. We ate that (actually inhaled them) quickly with the yummy housemade bread and butter that arrived at about the same time. Dimitri had a very good dark beer with the meal ($5). The first small plate to arrive was “Crisp Pork Belly celery root puree/green apple agrodulce” ($9). The pork belly was cooked perfectly and tasted delicious. The celery root puree was unusual and very good too. The green apple agrodulce helped to balance the richness of the pork belly. With the pork belly, two more small plates arrived: the “Housemade burrata, eggplant escabeche, crisp shallots” ($5) and the “Hanachi with butternut squash puree, soy caramel, smoked sea salt” ($9 ). We loved the burrata and actually bought a small ball ($5) to take home. We saved the hanachi for last since it was a cold dish and once we ate it, we loved it. Actually everything was excellent. The last snack to arrive was the “Roast bone marrow, red onion jam” ($5) and it was a huge bone and was fabulous. By this time we were getting really full but we had to try their beignets for dessert ($7). Unfortunately we didn’t like them (maybe we were too stuffed). But they were heavy-- not like the light and crispy ones we adore. The meal was a great success. The manager and another manager-like person came to talk to us (which we love) and we vowed to make the drive to Glenwood Springs to try their dinner menu. We spent $55.39 plus tip.
