24 hours in Vegas: build my food itinerary!

Border Grill is in Mandalay Bay (MB) and its serves a brunch on Sat + Sun which is receiving rave reviews. Restaurant.com sells discounted gift certificates that you can use for the brunch as long as you meet the minimum purchase requirement.

Several other restaurants in MB participate in restaurant.com as well including RM Seafood (downstairs) and Aureole.

The Verandah at the Fours Seasons inside MB serves an excellent breakfast.

You could take the free tram from Mandalay Bay to Excalibur and then walk to the Monte Carlo. Then catch another tram Carlo to CityCenter for the $20.12 3-course lunch at Milos.

Best caviar in Vegas

Hello all.

My wife and I are traveling to Las Vegas in a few weeks and she really wants to have some good caviar while we are there.

Is there a specific place we should try?

Thanks in advance!

Scarpetta, Jaleo, The Palm, Secret Pizza, Mesa Grill, Carnegie Deli

"I’m Italian by heritage and I’ve eaten Italian food in Italy and all over North America...."

There are thousands and thousands of others who can claim this as well. Me included.

Glad to hear about Scarpetta. We were in Vegas for 4 nights last week and wanted to go to Scarpetta but just never got to it. Saw Scott Conant on the escalator going up to his restaurant though.

And had some amazing meals. The best of the bunch, and probably my best meal of 2012 so far, was at B&B. We had the Emilia-Romana tasting menu and there was not a false note from beginning to end. The courses (as copied from the B&B web site) were:

Mortadella “Spuma” with Piadina and Pistachio

Strichetti with Spring Vegetables and Stracchino

Stinging Nettle Garganelli with Ragu Bolognese

Bollito Misto with Salsa Verde

Cravera Parmigiano-Reggiano “24 Mesi” with Aceto Tradizionale

Gelatina di Lambrusco

Warm Local Apricots with Vanilla Semifreddo

The highlight of the meal was the Bolito Misto. From the moment the maitre d' opened the tureen and the smell came wafting over to the table, I knew it was going to be amazing. The aroma brought me right back to Bologna; it was that authentic. The tableside service was not only a nice touch, but authentic as well. The meats were out of this word: cotechino, calf's tongue and a turkey "zampone;" a riff on the traditional zampone (stuffed pig's trotter) this was a turkey breast stuffed with ground pork, pork rinds, and spices. Simply amazing. The bolito was served with a traditional salsa verde. The only criticism I can make is that I wish they had also served a mostarda di cremona with the bolito as well.

A real surprise was a new addition to the Palazzo (where we stayed) called the Public House. Owned by a restaurant group, this is an American take on a gastropub. We were floored by how good the food was. The most outstanding thing we had was a selection of charcuterie. We chose the duck rillettes, country pate and a porchetta stuffed with rabbit loin. As a bonus, the chef sent out a "foie gras parfait." This was a crock foie gras with a layer of rhubarb gelatin on top. When mixed together and spread on toasted bread, the taste was sublime. I literally could not stop eating it. The other three charcuterie items were just as good. Charcuterie is fast becoming my favorite category of food these days.

Another stand out was China Poblano. We were torn between this restaurant and Jaleo for lunch one day. I really had my heart set on CP for weeks but my partner liked the menu at Jaleo better. Since I had wanted to go to CP for some time, I won out. And we were both very glad I did. We sat at the counter where they make the Mexican food and ordered a few items from both sides of the menu. We started with the sui mai sampler. There were 8 in all with 2 of each flavor: traditional; scallop; beef; and chicken. They were all terrific. We then had three tacos: lobster, ducks tongue and cochinita. Again, all were very good with the standout being the lobster. Finally, we had the Golden Pigs. This was the standout of the meal. 4 lightly fried steamed BBQ pork buns served with a condensed milk dipping sauce. Outrageuously delicious!

Our last night we ate at Prime at the Bellagio. We had originally had a reservation at Craftseak but got to talking with a sommelier who used to work at Prime and suggested we would enjoy Prime much more than Crafteak. Plus, he texted ahead for us and secured a reservation at a table with a view of the water show. How could we pass that up? I won't go into detail about the meal at Prime because it was a typical steakhouse meal. We enjoyed it very much, but I guess it wasn't as special as the other meals I have detailed. There were two standouts though: the side of gratin Dauphinois (the original scalloped potato dish) and the coconut souffle for dessert.

All in all, we had a wonderful time in Vegas (as we always do) and can't wait to go back again soon.

What I learned in Vegas

Call me late to the party, naive or uneducated, but I was always under the impression that the "celebrity chefs" owned their restaurants. I just found out this is not true. While some do out and out own their restaurants (the Batali /Bastianich empire is one) many do not. For example, Tom Colicchio does not own Craftsteak. He sold the name and recipes to the company that owns the MGM Grand and in turn gets a salary from them based on sales for the year. One way to know if a chef owns the restaurant is if you can charge the meal to your room. If you can, then the hotel/casino owns the restaurant. I'm not saying this is a steadfast rule, but more often than not I'm told it is the case.

It's amazing what you learn when you get friendly with the bar staff, chefs, etc.

Vegas May 21-24, trying to decide between restaurants in Mandalay Bay and MGM Grand

Three of us ate at Jaleo for about $100. We were just the right amount of stuffed. Secret pizza is located on the third floor of the Cosmo, where all the restaurants are (Jaleo, Comme Ca, Blue Ribbon). It's between Jaleo and Blue Ribbon in a dark, wood-paneled hallway with framed record covers on the wall. The white pizza with oven roasted tomatoes is amazing and their marinara has just the right amount of spice to make their regular pizzas terrific.
If you are set on a buffet, may I suggest the Wynn buffet or Wicked Spoon? I think the quality is better. And if you time it just right, you can hit the tail end of lunch before hey change the price for dinner. You'll be able taste some of the lunch items before they quickly roll out the dinner items.
If you love pastries and fine sandwiches, you'll love Jean Philippe. I had a prosciutto and fresh mozzarella sandwich on fresh ciabatta, basil, and pesto. They have an amazing selection of made-to-order crepes. The desserts are flat out amazing. We each had to have one...and we shared to taste a bit of everything.

4th Trip this year-trying different places-thoughts?

My sister and I went to Comme Ca year ago. I also liked the look of the menu and I had the skate and she the salmon. The food was fine but not amazing with her salmon over cooked slightly. It is possible we misordered as everyone around us were enjoying their steaks. The place is noisy and the service is fantastic. The next night we went to Jaleo and had fun making our many choices in our room beforehand off a printed menu. Some were hits and some didn't live up to my expectations. It is fun, you get to sample lots of small plates, and once again the service is amazing. Our server told us that there is no wrong or right way to order, whatever we wanted.....we started off with a few plates and a glass of Sherry and then ordered as we liked. It was a fun experience.

Definitely second the recommendation of the bar at Sage. Also, I always enjoy the bar at Bouchon...great oysters, terrific bistro food and nice ambiance. Although it's not a place for bar dining, I have dined alone at Le Cirque several times and have had really wonderful meals. Make a reservation for one, dress nicely and you will be treated wonderfully. If Ivo Angelov, the manager, knows you are a chef, I'd be surprised if you were not treated royally.

Deciding between Mesa Grill, Spago, and Mon Ami Gabi... NEED HELP!!!

All three of those places are very good lunch spots. Best atmosphere has to be Mon Ami Gabi because you are literally sitting on the strip and can watch the Bellagio fountains but food is just okay.

The best food can be found at Spago which is great for lunch or dinner but might have the worst atmosphere, unless you are into eating in a mall setting with people passing by. The pasta dishes are amazing.

Mesa Grill is a great lunch spot. Atmosphere is okay but the waiters pretty much mention Bobby Flay like he is there all the time and some of the food is hit or miss. I love the chopped salad and the shrimp tamale. Some of my other favorites there are the shrimp tacos and the grits (omg the grits) but that is only available for weekend brunch.

Lotus of Siam Help

I share your love for the short rib khao soi. The first time I ever had ANY khao soi was at Lotus more than ten years ago (which was always #1 on the Northern menu). I was luckier than you -- I was by myself and didn't have to share. But I hope you do continue experimenting with menu. I've probably eaten at Lotus 100 times by now, maybe more, and I still haven't tried everything on the menu.

Some friends of mine, the forces behind BigEmpire.com, used to run a weekend once a year, and then write hilarious trip reports about them after the fact. From the second Soiree on, we made it a point to have a banquet at LOS on Saturday night. In the late 90s/early 00's I was so obsessed with LOS that I was plotting what I would eat at LOS the next day while I was eating at LOS. Matt captured that well in his trip report:

"After unloading the cameras, Stinky, Amy and I met Feldy at a Thai restaurant named Lotus of Siam. Feldy just would not stop talking about this place. "Oh, Lotus of Siam, this," and "Lotus of Siam, that." "I'm going to name my first child Lotus F. Siam," and "Oh, your recent surgery reminds me of a funny story that has nothing to do with Lotus of Siam. Speaking of Lotus of Siam"

Best Coffee in Las Vegas - An Aussi's take on Las Vegas Coffee

I have been in Las Vegas for two weeks and in desperate need of a good coffee. As an Australian my expectations of US coffee shops has been confirmed (they need to send their staff to Australia to learn how to make coffee), that is until I found a coffee shop called Leone Cafe in Tivoli Village on Rampart in Summerlin and I now have eat my own words.

The BEST coffee I have ever had outside Australia and better than 90% of Australian coffee shops. They know coffee and even roast their own beans.

My wife drinks a double shot espresso (short black) and I like a very strong latte. The espresso has a good crema and was good and strong, not too bitter. It was served as an espresso should with a small glass of sparkling soda water. I asked for a latte double shot in a small cup (you have three cup size options depending on how much you want to dilute your coffee with milk). The latte was as lattes should be with a good crema and a some coffee art in the milk. The latte was superb .

The staff are excellent very pleasant and professional and also demonstrate a passion for good coffee.

If you like coffee the way it should be served, then I recommend you go out of your way to visit Leone Cafe for your daily fix or two. They are located in a beayuiful little village shopping center called the Tivoli Village in Summerlim.

you could check out Village Meat and Wind on eastern just south of Tropicana. It is a fantastic meat, gourmet store. I've never bought wine there but they do have a selection of very top shelf Ca. wines.

Jaleo Review

Thank you for this review. Heading to Vegas next month with 5 of my friends for my bachelorette party. We're staying at the Cosmopolitan and have an 8:30 dinner at Jaleo on a Friday night. My cousin and I are by far the most adventurous eaters in the group and am looking forward to Jaleo. I have a hard time committing to an entry so Tapas for me is always the way to go. Reading positive reviews helps me sell my restaurant choices to the others in the group.

Thank you for the commenting on the salt level. I rarely add salt to anything, so I am more than happy to ask the server to "hold the salt".

I'm happy to hear that it's noisy. We have an early flight out of JFK and we're not in our 20s anymore. Hoping the noise level will keep us awake after a long day at the pool.

What is the best italian restaurant on the strip?

We had a great meal at Scarpetta back in February. From the apps to the entrees, and through dessert, the entire meal was excellent. The service however was not what you would expect from a top notch Vegas restaurant. The server screwed up my drink order, and then proceeded to screw up my entree order as well. Sucks for him because I was the one paying the bill for our party of 4 and it all happened to me.

Just a touch South of the strip, we also had a great meal last November at Panevino. Food and service was excellent. I would definitely return

Twist or big daddy Joel Robuchon

I've dined at both restaurants (Robuchon 3x and Twist 1x). While the food at Twist is more creative, not all of it was delicious. Gagnaire "twist" is to do multiple variations on a theme with some not being too successful. The room itself is very sleek--not glamorous like Robuchon. Service was fine-our captain was very charming, but the waiter must have just transferred from a local diner with lines like "hey, you still working on that?". Service at Robuchon is extremely polished yet friendly. I dined at Robuchon in March, and while not all of the dishes were as wonderful as my dinner there in 2011 which were the best of that trip, I'd still return quicker to Robuchon than Twist. Robuchon's "wow" factor with the limo, bread cart, and bon-bon trolley cannot be beat by any restaurant anywhere.

How is the Aria Buffet?

Staying at Vdara and 2 eggs and orange juice at their fast food place costs the same as a buffet, so I went to Bellagio yesterday and Aria today.
Bellagio was great for breakfast - after waiting nearly 40 minutes at 9:45 to get in - ate Scottish salmon and smoked scallops and lovely fresh fruit and thick, custardy french toast. It was all wonderful.

Aria? I walked in- no line - at 8:30 (first bad sign), it resembles an ugly cafeteria (honestly, with the $$ they spent on that hotel, for the buffet to look that bad!), food was meh. No fresh egg station (the scrambled eggs were powdered, with no option of getting a fresh egg), no salmon/scallops, the french toast was thin and dry, an overall odd assortment of foods at breakfast (Portuguese sausage? Ham? Pot stickers? Chinese chicken salad? Processed cheese ?) I don't eat breads or desserts so can't speak of them - but I suppose good for bagel lovers, I saw 5 or 6 types of flavored cream cheese. The muesli was probably the best thing on the buffet, but it was heavily sugared and there were no bowls to put it in (very soupy). When I asked about bowls they pointed across the buffet to a couple sitting by the grits. Hmmm. Overall, I didn't have one thing that I wanted to taste again, wouldn't go back, and can't understand how it can cost more than Bellagio's buffet.

Thanks!
What about the deserts? Are they small tasting portion sizes like the rest? Or larger a la carte sizes?
