Who from Dallas has been to Vancouver/Victoria BC and can recommend place to eat or see?
We are traveling at the end of June. I have tried the boards for BC and only got a few results.
6 nights and willing to travel.

Has Celebration moved? It used to be on Lovers Lane, not Mockingbird.

If you enjoy AYCE restaurants with pedestrian food at a low price point then Celebration is the place to go.

Strangely, their lunch menu offers better choices than their dinner menu.

Dallas Dim Sum

I prefer being able to get in and not have the crazy rush. Both Kirin Court and Maxims have the same general issue of the wait staff trying to move you on. That being said, they are all good, but Hong Kong Royale is just much easier to deal with. That being said they are all okay. None of them meet the better San Francisco Dim Sum, but then again for the price a great deal here!

Since my last post in this thread, I've (very happily) discovered Pecan Lodge in Shed 2 of the Dallas Farmers Market.
Without a doubt, the best BBQ in Dallas! Not only is their BBQ great but unlike others you've mentioned, It's clean, air conditioned and, you can sit down in comfort and watch the "passing parade" while you are in BBQ nirvana. Order your brisket fatty and I guaranty you'll be a very happy camper!
They're open Thursday thru Sunday from 11:00AM-3:00PM.

I had the Ssaam tacos on Thursday, those were great.

Had Sliders on Friday when I saw the Meat Pies were not there (forget the name of the truck....).

In meetings thru Wedndesday, so at best I can go back Thursday to see if Meat Pies are back. (sure hope so!).

All,

The season is upon us. I saw Alphonso mangoes at Central Market (Lovers) yesterday though I'm not sure how long they've been there. Please report here if you find a store with a good supply. I plan on getting my mango fix for the year taken care of over the next week or two while the Alphonso mangoes are still around. Same goes for mangosteen. I checked the vietnamese grocery store on Jupiter today for both fruits and they had neither.

Best beef ribs near Grapevine?

I'm in GV and the nearest I know is the Woodshed in FW. Better-than-great outdoor/indoor experience on the Trinity, but you might want to do a trial run on the ribs. I haven't had them, but wasnt bowled over by the app and entrees that we had - artichoke, wild boar sausage and pulled pork sand. They may do better w/tradition BBQ.

Hard 8 BBQ in Coppel may have them. You pay by the pound, price can get run up quickly, so you're warned! I didn't love it the one time I went several years ago, but reviews are mixed. Another possible trial run.

GREAT place to stop on country motorcycle rides! From McKinney north...take the 455 Weston exit and go north. The address is 714 Main St. Weston, TX. 75009 Phone number is 972-382-2735.

Here is their Facebook page. Go out here and like the page so you can start getting their feeds...worth the drive, I'm telling you.

Sissy's Southern Kitchen

I just remembered that the crab cakes came with a pretty cool variation on sauce gribiche. In my experience, it's usually a fine dice of ingredients - egg, cornichon, capers, herbs, etc. It usually seems less of a sauce, and more like a relish. At Sissy's, it is much more mayonnaise-like - smooth and creamy, but with the flavor of cooked egg yolk. I thought it was good, and an interesting version that I had not seen before.

I would clarify one point... the chicken isn't any (or much) better than Babe's. There are some other good things on the menu at Sissy's - the crab cakes were outstanding with a pretty unique variation on gribiche - and it's by far from a bad restaurant, based on one dinner. I think that it would be better to compare it to Screen Door or Hattie's, and I'd say that it compares favorably. I'm not an enormous fan of those restaurants either, but I think that all are reasonably decent places to eat, if you're after that sort of food.

Snow Crab Legs in Dallas/Plano/Allen/McKinney/Frisco

Dodie's in Frisco used to be my go to place for snow crab legs, but they changed ownership last year and the quality/flavor went downhill. I'm looking for a new go to place. I tried The Boiling Crab in Garland, but don't like having the crab drenched in "butter" in order to get the flavor profile. (They deliver the crab in plastic bags that are filled with butter and whatever spice profile you choose. There is no way to get them fat free.) I'm looking for a place that boils their crab legs in spice mixture that imparts the flavor during the boil.

Any suggestions?

Graduation Lunch

You could have your pick of chains in GV as well as N. Irving - but given your requirements, I'd probably opt for Tolbert's on GV's Main Street - if your guests are from out of state, they'd have a good offering of Texas grub, plus it's a great area to "walk-off" lunch and browse the shops. There's an ice cream and cupcake shop just north of Tolbert's! If steak would be a better option, (as a chain) Salt Grass comes through with a good, moderately priced steak - plus they have the semi-separated rooms for groups.

Need Restaurants for Business Trip

Local to your Irving/Southlake area, all of the better steakhouses will exceed the $50, but JR"s in Colleyville would put you right at that amount - without drinks or salad. Still, might be worth your look as they serve a wonderful steak. Tip - most, if not all of their steaks are sauced. I don't know why they do this, because their steak is excellent stand-alone, - ask for the sauce on the side. http://www.jrsteaks.com/images/steakhouse_menu/Menu.pdf

For regional Tex-Mex, Anamia's in Southlake, LaHacienda Ranch in Colleyville or MiDia in Grapevine. A much older, but more upscale Tex-Mex/Mex in Irving is ViaReal.

Grapevine, neighboring Southlake, has a number of wine rooms on Main Street. Farina's Wineroom and Cafe (Italian) might be of interest for you. http://farinaswinery.homestead.com/

Others will give you a number of options in Dallas. If you'd be interested in a drive to Fort Worth:
Ellerbes - upscale American, some local ingredients, seasonal menu
Tillmans Roadhouse - Texas Classy
Lonesome Dove Western Bistro - Fine dining in the FW Stockyards, game meat options
Reata - Downtown, named after Reata Ranch in the movie "Giant", fine dining with strong western appointments. Weather permitting, rooftop, patio dining.

King Buffet opened about a year ago at Glade Rd and Hwy 121, south Grapevine. Went only once as its not my deal, but it is large and maintained beautifully with a huge variety of options, including sushi and a Mongolian grill. Call to verify if they continue to have crab legs on weekends if you care about that. http://www.kingbuffetdfw.com/

Sunday Dinner - Steak/TexMex/BBQ in Dallas

I have a bunch of coworkers coming for a week long work thing, and they arrive to Dallas on Sunday evening. A lot of the options I was going to suggest seem to be closed on Sundays (Neighborhood Services, Papasito's, etc.). Everyone is flying into DFW and staying near 635 and Central. Options closer into Dallas (Knox/Henderson or Uptown area also good).

So, can anyone suggest a few places to take these people? Some have requested Steak or BBQ. I threw in TexMex also. Really any place that has good food and good drink options (beer or wine).

IBEX Ethiopian Cuisine - Richardson

So...I was on here last night asking about Ethiopian restaurants.

I had never tried Ethiopian food and was curious about the cuisine, plus one of my kids has a school project on Ethiopia.

I read all of your reviews and also my wfe dug up some. In the end, we decided to try IBEX which is on Greenville Road.

SWEET FIND! The food was great, we had a sampler platter that included a number of vegetarian entrees, a lamb stew, spicy cubed beef, and a chicken dish. Additionally we had a Spicy Beef Tartare. While I admit to not having a base to compare from, I have to say the food was outstanding,it was really good, nice spice level, variety of textures, and nice flat bread to dip into the entrees.

NOT only that, but the owner (Ashe) was a really nice host. We told him that our daughter was doing a school project and he took her around the place to point out various items that had cultural an historical significance. Gave her as much time as she needed.

They also had a setup for coffee there that looked interesting, very traditional. I've been in the coffee business for many years, and am a huge fan of Ethiopian Coffees.

Not sure where this ranks among the other Ethiopian places in town, but as a novice was real impressed. I'd be curious to see what some others who have also been here might say about this place. Worth a look.

Around DFW

Moroccan - Kasbah Grill in Irving - Tagines and couscous dishes are very good

If you don't mind a smokey atmosphere then Mr. Max in Irving is good for Japanese style curry.

Indian - would head over to Samosa Hut....great samosas and decent spicy chicken tikka masala (just don't eat the naan). If you are looking for more of a sit down place then you can go to Amruth, Pasand or Our Place. All of them have lunch buffets but dinner prices go up and you are on your own to explore the dishes.

http://www.pasand.net/
http://www.ourplaceusa.net/

Mexican - I really like how La Margarita in Irving takes the tex-mex spin on things and makes them a bit more mex. I really like the duck carnitas and the pulled pork relleno. Dishes are always pretty solid. You could also try out the new sister restaurant Mi Dia From Scratch in Grapevine. It is hard to know what to recommend.....I pretty much liek all the dishes I have had there.

If you are down for Mexican style chicken then head for El Pollo Regio or Dona Lencha If you are feeling a bit more adventurous there are plenty of taquerias in Irving that would quench your Mexican cravings.

Nepalese - Everest in Irving is about the only place that still serve fairly decent Nepalese food.

http://www.yelp.com/biz/everest-indian-himalayan-restaurant-and-grill-irving

Thai - Bangkok Orchid - I stick only to the authentic thai menu....go for dishes like pad cha, fish nuggets in red curry, or yum pla duk foo (fried fish salad)

Teppo - Review

Teppo is one of my favorite restaurants in Dallas. The fish is always amazingly fresh. The dishes are creative. Excellent.

With regards to Tei An, I've tried to like it. After my first disappointment, I went back and tried other dishes. After that disappointment, I tried again. Now, I just have to conclude I don't appreciate good soba noodles. Too many other people love the place for it to be as disappointing as I think.

Congrats! R+D Kitchen In Preston Center might be on the upper end of moderate, but I think they do a great job serving excellent American fare (something for everyone), plus sushi, in a modern but relaxed dining room, without the volume of a chain (nearby sister restaurant Houston's does as well). Enjoy your special occasion, wherever you go.
