The Grape won Texas Monthly #1 for their burger, and it is good. The buns are housemade, lettuce/tomato grown in their own garden, etc. Only served on the weekend I believe--I know Sunday all day for sure. Love Shack (in FW) is a good burger too.

Oh, and Twisted Root is worth a visit ... if you go, be sure to have an adult shake. (Their bumper sticker collection is ... interesting.)

Absolutely make sure you go to Paynes next time. It's phenomenal. However, i would ask them to go light on the sauce as the last time i went it was drenched in sauce which detracted from the sandwich.

As a side note, Rendezvous is horrible. And i don't mean overrated or too touristy, it's just bad bbq. Worse than dickeys.

Good review of Stampede 66. I love Stephen Pyles. I thought Stampede 66 was very good but my expectations were unreasonably high after eating at his "Stephen Pyles" restaurant a number of times. I wanted the like Stampede 66 more and loved the atmosphere but given the choice, I am going back to the original.

Some of my thai favorites are
- Zenna which has a location in downtown (also one in North Dallas and one in Plano),
- Ginger Thai (which I believe has 2 locations)
- Pho Que Huong is really vietnamese instead of thai but their flat noodle dishes are similar
- Bangkok Inn in East Dallas

NYer coming to Dallas for the first time.

Having been to NYC I would say Mexican, Vietnamese, BBQ and maybe Thai were under represented in NYC.

I would probably go with La Me or Nam Hua for an excellent authentic meal.

La Me I would go for more of the grileld items such as bun cha Ha Noi (grilled pork three ways with noodles), any of the bun dishes (bun ga nuong cha gio - grill chicken with fried spring roll), Bun Bo Hue (spicy beef noodle soup)

Nam Hua is where you will find more interesting dishes like banana flower salad, lotus root salad (which would be my choice - tell them no fish mint (diep Ca) or vietnamese coriander (rau ram) without trying it first), banh xeo - vietnamese crepe

I would recommend a stop at Bambu and order solely from the blackboard. You can call them and tell them you will be in town and they just might make you something special, not on any menu. I rpvoded pictures of Miang Kam - a street snack of wild betel leaves, palm sugar paste, peanuts and dried shrimp, Issan grilled sausage, and Nam Tod (fermeted sausage salad)

Mexican I would either go to Mesa, Komali, Tortilleria La Nueva Fresh and Hot or Taqueria La Banqueta.

BBQ I would just go to The Slow Bone for brisket and sides.

fresh fish/seafood DFW?

I've had bad luck with the fish from the southlake central market a couple times, along with some other items.

Try the Fort Worth Central Market location. I've never had bad/smelly fish from there. They've got great turnover on all their products. The manager told me it's one of the busiest Central Markets in North Texas, so thats a plus for buying seafood from somewhere.

On the weekends you have to get a "ticket" with a number and wait a little wait for your number to be called. I always ask them, "whats the freshest fish that you've got?", or "what has just been flown in?" Plus I always ask to smell the fish beforehand, which even the fishmonger replied, "you know, you don't see people ask this as much as they should!"

But yeah, T.J.'s for sure. If you've got a Facebook I would "like" their page on there for updates on fresh flown in fish, sales, and dinner specials.

One night to remember...

I do like the fried hominy at the Moth. Kind of a cool and tasty snack... nice texture, salty, slightly spicy, a squeeze of lime... but the real reason to go is for the beer. I've also found their burgers to be outstanding... but only about half the time.

At FT33, one of the pastry chefs (Sabrina) has been there from the beginning, but she's been given more responsibility/leeway once Josh left. She's pretty young (I don't know how much experience she has), but enthusiastic and I think she's done a couple of really nice things there - she designed a peanut butter/chocolate dessert that I quite liked. More recently (like in the past few weeks) they hired Maggie Huff, who was at Pyles, then at the Pyramid and from what I've seen she's extremely competent - I haven't had the opportunity to see her creativity in action so much... but we happened to sit at adjacent tables at FT33 one night (before she signed on), and she had a bunch of ideas about where to take the desserts. I'd be shocked if the desserts aren't really good... that is, once they implement the changes. Last time I looked at the dessert menu, it had not yet changed.

As much as I like their BBQ, I tend to hesitate recommending them because I know what it's like to travel and have limited time. The waits there can be pretty ridiculous and you have to find a happy balance between using your time wisely vs good food.

Tex-Mex Breakfast near Fairmont

Lived in Dallas for many years, and my fave Mexican brekky is right down the street from The Fairmont: Hererra's on Maple St. When I lived there, though, they only served brekky on Sundays. Dunno about now.

Pyles' best place is also near The Fairmont. Best bet is to get directions from the concierge.

My fave place in Dallas is Javier's. Mexico City Mexican. Dinner only. If you go, tell Javier, or Pepe, the maitre, or Victor the bartender, or Louis the waiter, that their old customer, Dick Wilke, sent his best regards. (Wilke is two syllables.)

PS: Dunno if you saw my final thanks for Greenfields: dickgrub Apr 24, 2013 12:11 AM

Amazinc: Surprised to find Greenfield's Market is basically and entirely a Birkenstock/granola store with the single exception of the 10% of the meat case devoted to Aukushi beef. Inexperienced counter help: asked him to cut me a 2" porterhouse and he goggled his eyes like I had asked for a slice of the moon. Bought a pre-cut 1" rib eye: very good taste, probably best for me in 5 years, tho thin steaks cannot develop the real flavor. Will return to GM and be more insistent. Very grateful to you for recc. Aukushi and Greenfield's. PS: Scott at Wahoo Seafood pleased to learn of your commendation.

Rather late to the discussion but if you ventured out of the airport hopefully you made your next flight. With the highway construction projects surrounding DFW it would be tight.

I would have suggested North Main Barbecue in Euless as the best Texas barbecue place in your window. Spotty hours though but a championship legacy.

Nina Portena is a bit pricey on their empanadas but they sure deliver on flavor.

Also Argentine Bakery in Irving (Beltline and 183 - Target anchored center) has Argentinian inspired pastries and empanadas.

I just wish the owners of Don Panza/La Carreta would open a empanada shop up again. Thei pizza wasn't half bad either.

Restaurant -- Park Cities area

Spoon and Bijoux are head and shoulders the best restaurants listed Thus far. I'd give Bijoux the nod on quality of the food, Spoon on the novelty of the preparation. I also am very fond of Nona. Maybe not quite in Bijoux/Spoon territory, but close and a bit less formal.

You might also consider Neighborhood Services. Solid quality food in a neighborhood joint sort of setting. A bit noisier than the other three, however.

A huge second for Smoke! If convenient, have their great brunch served on weekends. Also try their excellent and popular sister restaurant, Bolsa in the Bishop Arts area.
The Bishop Arts area is loaded with great, non-touristy "neighborhood" restaurants. Arguably, the best food neighborhood in Dallas.
http://bolsadallas.com/
http://bishopartsdistrict.weebly.com/dine.html

As you're going to be in the Highland Park area, I highly recommend Royal China in the N/E corner
of the Preston Royal Shopping Center.
http://www.royalchinadallas.com/

Mexican: The real thing....
These are the Mexican restaurants I usually eat at and highly recommend.......

El Ranchito. Great Cabrito and roving Mariachi band. Very authentic!

Gonzalez. Great Tex-Mex. Be sure to ask for the "salsa fresca"! You have to ask for it with your chips or you get like salsa from a jar. Great home made flour tortillas.

El Tizoncito. Excellent authentic Mexico City style tacqueria with meat carved off a vertical Trompo rotisserie at three locations in Dallas. Very comfortable. And, they make their own tortillas. Great drinks, too.

Mesa. Authentic, upscale food of Veracruze.
Considered, "the best in town". And it is!

In Richardson, Casa Milagro for best Tex-Mex in a very comfortable setting with great food, service, and drinks.
