Hi, 8IP:

No disclaimer needed, thanks. Wahine is from the midwest too, so we're looking forward to the curds and your other suggestions. Will they do a South Dakota martini?

We'll take the Amazombies as we find them...

Yup, sounded like that's as low as it gets. Was there around 3pm today. Lots of Emile Henry if you're into that. Mostly Wusthof knives remain and some decent pots/pans left if you need something specific. Plenty of gadgets and bakeware too.

La Teranga

Wanted to piggyback on equinose's recommendation. We visited recently and ordered the lamb mafe, the veggie yassa, and the fried appetizers the name for which apparently none of us can recall. I drank the sorrel punch and the gal ordered bouye, a drink made from sweetened baobab fruit.

Everything was very good, but the highlights were the mafe and the bouye.

The mafe, a stew of tender lamb shoulder, perfectly cooked carrots, cassava, and yam in a creamy smooth peanut broth was frankly tough to stop eating.

The bouye was a slightly sweet, slightly thick treat with notes that I'd probably describe as almond and dates with maybe the slightest touch of vanilla. The sorrel punch, on the other hand, was bright and invigorating.

Each entree came with a large mound of jasmine rice, probably a little much for us, although I have absolutely no idea what "traditional" proportions might be. Next time we might see about subbing in a salad for some of the rice.

And definitely ask for the "hot sauce" that equinose mentions above, a thick habanero- (and nut?) based paste that is wonderful stirred into the mafe or spread atop that fried app.

We've avoided it based on an early review from friends and the fact that none of the three or four reboots in that space have been good. Didn't realize it's under new ownership. Also, the "makeover" seems really half-hearted and chintzy, but if that actually translates to reasonable prices for good fresh seafood (as the review suggests) I am not one to complain.

Now that the weather is nice we'll give the Friday night fish fry a shot some sunny evening and report back. The indoor space is really awkward and unpleasant to me.

Nice selection and very tasty. Latter picked up Pizza at Flying Squirrel. Pulled port was a good surprise. .

Altura is probably your best bet. There menu is unique: you can choose from 3-5 courses and pick each course from anywhere in the menu. I tend to only order from the appetizer, pasta and entree section since I am not a fan of sweets.

Yes, the growth of hatch chili roasting events coming up here has been welcome the last few years - and it seemed to grow last year to a wider bunch of places. Hope that continues. Very reasonable when bought that way :)

We went to Mai Thaiku last week. Three of us shared:
Mieng Kahm, which was good but I thought the bai cha plu was bitter.
Green mango salad with prawns, also good but the mango was more ripe than green
Khao soi, our favorite dish by far. The curry had a nice, building spice.
Pork Belly in thai five spice. This was our least favorite dish. It tasted bland so it might have been better if we had eaten it before the khoa soi.

Pestle Rock is next on my list.

Are Chinese restaurants in SEA under-visited?

I see 3 reasons:
I think the biggest factor is the rise of other asian foods in Seattle. We have so much Thai, Vietnamese, Teriyaki, Sushi, etc. I think we probably have more of this than most cities and I think it directly competes with Chinese food for my restaurant dollar.

Second, just not as much good neighborhood chinese here as I've encountered in other cities

Third - this one may be personal but we go less often since my wife went gluten free. Chinese is the hardest since virtually every dish has gluten.

Last night I had an excellent birthday dinner with my wife at Joule.

We started with the beef tartare. Pine nuts added great texture and the asian pear nice sweetness.

Second we had the rice cake with chorizo and mustard greens. The rice cake was made of sliced, crispy mochi, looked almost like turnip or parsnip. It was confusing visually at first. It was a lovely mix of textures and flavors and heat, .

Third we had the Chinese broccoli with walnut pesto. The broccoli was lightly charred and tossed with walnut pesto and roasted or poach garlic cloves. There was a pronounced vinegar note to the pesto that did a lovely job lightening a heavy dish. It was delightful

Out last course was the makerel with green curry cilantro and currants. Amazing crispy skin and fatty fish in a great foil with sweet currents and green curry. IT was an amazing contrast of flavors.

For drinks my wife had the sweet corn tea which we both liked.

I had the jalisco campfire, amazing smokey and flavorful.

We both had the rhubarb shrub , bright, and refreshing.

Delancy or Spinasse?

Just a quick update - had lunch at Revel, which was delicious and I really dug the vibe. I had the corned lamb salad and the short rib rice bowl.

Lastly, I did wind up at Spinasse on my last night in town. I have to say, it was one of the best meals I've ever had, and the service was great. I did a walk-in and 5, requested and was seated at the counter immediately upon my arrival. I mentioned to the server that I wanted to try and be out by 7 and could she help me pick the right amount of food so that I didn't have to rush but that I got the most out of the experience (I had a flight out of Seatac at 9) and she paced everything perfectly and was attentive and wonderful. My companion and I had the tajarin both ways (butter and sage and ragu), the asparagus antipasti and the artichoke contorti. Everything was great. The butter and sage tajarin was hands-down the best pasta I've ever eaten at a restaurant. I make pasta at home but don't think I'll ever come near the awesomeness I had at Spinasse. Thanks again to everyone for your feedback - I will be back and will fill in my next trip with the great suggestions (especially bars) here. I had a great time in your beautiful city.

Yes. I believe the current chef used to own Noble Court in Bellevue.

Not too much of a fan of O'Asian myself - their stuff always tastes so "sanitized". A lot of interesting sauces/spices/herbs are absent from many items. But they certainly seem to get more business from a higher-end clientele than Joi's in Bellevue, so that makes sense.

No worries! I love meats / veggies wrapped in dough... Pretty much in any shape, size or form. I grew up making pork and chive dumplings (with the thinner skins) from scratch with my grandmother, wontons (on my own starting at age 8, when in a pinch, using the storebought wrappers and any filling i could conjure up), as well as the bao zi (with my mom, where we spent years perfecting the leavening / steaming process to eliminate the dead spots in the dough that turned off-white and non fluffy). So, had to inject my years of experience lest someone potentially miss a great restaurant!

Weekend Breakfast at Stumbling Goat: An impressive Bloody Mary

Finally got around to checking out the Stumbling Goat's breakfast, a new venture for this neighborhood joint.

As usual, their cocktails were crazy impressive. My spouse had the perfectly balanced bloody mary--the spice, the acidity, the fire-roasted tomatoes...so delicious (I tasted to confirm). And the "breakfast milk punch" will set you on a good footing for the day with your calcium intake to boot.

The breakfast -- had eggs benedict, delicious housemade brown butter hollandaise was applied with a masterful restrained hand -- the dish was not drowning it (a pet peeve). Ham slice could have been cut a bit thinner for my taste but that's just me. I also had some yummy bites of the tender brioche French toast...and the bacon. Oh, the bacon. I could just sit there all day over their bacon and a gallon of milk punch. Did I mention the bacon?
