It's definitely a good green chile burger, but I've waited over an hour for a burger when it wasn't even busy. I don't go there anymore because of this.

Tucson: Lil Abner's Steakhouse vs Daisy Mae's Steakhouse

I had the porter house at daisy maes. It was cooked to order but really lacked seasoning. It came with a baked potato (sour cream, butter, chives) wrapped in tin foil, the skin was not salted and you cut it open yourself. All you can eat beans (pinto with green chilis) and free all you can eat texas toast. sadly, our wiatress never offered us any refills of those items. The salad was iceberg lettuce, onion, tomato and a cucumber. House dressing is ranch. I found the blue cheese very watery. You can sppilt for 5 bucks additional, which gives you an additional salad, potato, bread, beans......I was not impressed.

It was also very loud inside...hard to have a conversation.

Moving to Tucson soon

I did find a house to rent in the Vail School District area. I hope it is a decent area and not too bad of a drive downtown....at least I do not need to worry about winter driving anymore! I didn't get to explore too many fun places sadly, but I did make a good list of places to check out! I enjoyed the pizza at Grimaldi's and thought the Sonoran hot dogs were great! On the way to the airport we ate at Lerua's (did not care for). I also didn't care for my meal at Daisy Mae's, though the look was cool. Really looking forward to the Hub, Lee lees, 47 Scott, 17th street market, food trucks (esp. the popsicle place) and many others!

Santa Fe: Comments on Coyote Cafe and Tabla de los Santos, please

I am planning our three dinners in SF for the last of the month.

Was surprised to read good things about Tabla del los Santos on another forum. Would love opinions from this forum.

I'm also curious about Coyote Cafe. We had one of the nicest times eating there we have ever had in SF. When we returned on our next trip, it was unquestionably the worst experience anywhere. I didn't think I would ever go back, but have been reading some complimentary things lately.

My husband read some appealing things about Cafe Chimayo, also.

Also comments and suggestions will be very much appreciated.

We just got back from a 5-day trip to Sedona. Try out Mesa Grill on top of Airport Mesa. We had 2 nice breakfasts and a nice "ladies night" appetizer dinner there. Eggs Ranchero -- yummy! Loverly decor and wonderful scenery, too. You can watch the planes take off and land. Stayed two nights at Garland's Oak Creek Lodge -- felt really pampered and the food was exquisite! Can't wait to go back.

They generally start up about the time they start trucking in produce from California and they shut them down in late August before most of the real harvest period. Most markets are more interested in face painting, selling cell phones and crafts than real groceries.

Reno, NV - Mother's Day brunch

I am a fan of the quaint Daughters Cafe, and this is their Mother's Day menu:

...we'll be serving Polenta Elisa (from Lake Como...rich with blue cheese and sage!), Sausage Rolls (Queen Elizabeth's favorite appetizer), Feta Stuffed Squash Blossoms, Fried Halloumi, Fresh Fruit, and Grilled Strawberry Shortcake on a skewer!

Daughters Cafe is located on the corner of First and Bell Streets in the Downtown Truckee River District of Reno, Nevada.

Joe's Diner [Santa Fe]

Yeah, I like Joe's pretty well too. I absolutely loved it the first couple of visits, but found that it suffered a little from the "magic trick effect", where the novelty wore off with repeat experiences.

I love the relaxed, neighborhoody feel, as well as the locally-sourced ethos, but at the end of the day I think the recipes are perfectly fine, not knock-your-socks-off great.

At this price point and overall playbook, I'd usually prefer to go to Plaza Cafe, which also uses a lot of fresh, local ingredients, but ultimately has what I think is better chow just about across the board. Regardless, still glad Joe's is there, and I still like to grab lunch or dinner there every now and then.

question about pizza in Tucson

Being originally from New York, I don't know what "California Style" pizza is. However, I can tell you that most of the so-called pizza you'll find in Tucson is terrible. You will usually find thin crusts, tomato sauce that is badly over-sweetened and/or over-salted, and cheese that may or may not be real.

After years of seeking a decent slice, I've found just three places that don't disappoint. They are Grimaldi's, Sauce, and Scordato's Pizzaria, formerly known as Vivace's Pizzaria.

I checked Open Table around dinner time last Friday and La Boca was booked from roughly 6:00 - 8:30 pm but just about every other place in town had a prime time table available. Especially on the weeknights you should be OK with last minute arrangements but if you have your heart set on a specific place for your weekend meals some advance planning may be in order.

Fish Tacos at The B Line, Tucson

I've seen their fish tacos mentioned here a few times. We were finally back to Tucson & managed to find parking even with the construction mess (for the record: on-street no-permit parking at 3rd Avenue by 4th Street; then find the gaps in the fence to cross the street) & enjoyed a really fine lunch. Their tortilla soup is tasty too. There aren't many tables & the place was mostly full around midday today so I'd guess it would be a happy zoo without the construction. Thanks to those who've mentioned The B Line. http://blinerestaurant.com/

Reno: More authentic Chinese food at 101 Taiwanese Cuisine

I happened to be in Reno last week and was glad I found this post (it's odd to me that Reno is in the Southwest board). I wasn't too hungry, but was happy to have a snack of a Taiwanese hamburger and tofu with preserved egg. The "hamburger" was particularly well executed--the pork cutlet was tasty and crispy and I enjoyed the relish and sweet crumbly topping (along with cilantro) included in the steamed bun. I wish I had room to try more of the menu, but what I had was great. The waitstaff were also very nice and they had wireless. They have a long milk tea/boba/shake list and it seems like they are going for a Taiwanese cafe atmosphere. The drinks are shrink-wrapped on top, but I'm pretty sure that is just a common boba cafe style choice rather than an indication of pre-packaging. I didn't try any, however, as they're generally too sweet for my tastes (and they didn't have my favorite, the avocado shake).

Which (andrewtree) puts the availability of New Mexico sourced peppers in the eastern US into a real strange place because the grocery store I depend on had their source 'dry up' about four weeks before they expected it to happen. (I didn't get to freeze as many as I'd like to have.)

Zacatecas. And, yes, their margs are fabulous. even just their house ones which they make with fresh juice in a big bin and serve out of a tap. Be forewarned - I had two there once (and I am no lightweight!) and stated to my friends - "I am leaving here with "X"s in front of both eyes" and I made an X symbol by crossing my fingers in front of my eyes.

Albuquerque - Southwest Chocolate & Coffee Fest

I didn't volunteer. With a couple of hours of training on Thursday, and working 5 or 6 hours, plus driving back and forth 4 times, it didn't seem worth the 2 free tickets. We did go on Saturday and we had a good time. I never thought I would say, "too much chocolate," but it was really an overload. The coffee was good and our favorite roaster was there from Durango.

Thanks for mentioning it here.

Great back in the '60's & '70's, went down there a couple of years ago and parked a couple blocks away and got hit up 5 times by smelly panhandlers before we even walked a block so just turned around and left. Maybe I'll try it again sometime.

albuquerque & santa Fe

The best thing you could do would be to start with some board searching.

Here's every thread that mentions Albuquerque or ABQ from the past 5 years:

http://www.chow.com/search?query=albuquerque+or+abq&board_name=Southwest&search_board_id=6&type=Topic&from_date=1+year+ago&board_parent=&search_board_id_btn=6&from_date_select=1+year+ago&user_name=&post_title=&search_board_id_btn_pop=6&sort_mode=best_match&recipe_source=#!query=albuquerque+or+abq&board_name=Southwest&search_board_id=6&type=Topic&from_date=5+years+ago&board_parent=&search_board_id_btn=6&from_date_select=5+years+ago&user_name=&post_title=&search_board_id_btn_pop=6&sort_mode=newest

And here's same for Santa Fe:

http://www.chow.com/search?query=santa+fe&type=Topic&board_name=Southwest&search_board_id=6&from_date=1+year+ago#!query=santa+fe&board_name=Southwest&search_board_id=6&type=Topic&from_date=5+years+ago&board_parent=&search_board_id_btn=6&from_date_select=5+years+ago&user_name=&post_title=&search_board_id_btn_pop=6&sort_mode=best_match&recipe_source=

If you can specify types of food you like, or price points, or anything else to help narrow it down, you might get more interesting "live" responses. Hope this helps!

Need recs for one night each in scottsdale, phoenix, and tuscon

Have you checked out the older threads on Tucson? There are a lot of recs there, but here are my short lists:

For mid-priced restos unique to Tucson, I'd recommend Maynard's, Cup Cafe, HUB, or DOWNTOWN Kitchen+Cocktails, or Feast, or Cafe Poca Cosa; you can look up their profiles, menus, and make reservations on Open Table to ensure prompt seating.

For a higher budget, I like GOLD, Primo, and Janos.

Had the lasagna last week at Little Italy and it was very homemade and yummy! We got in so late (9:30pm) that we got it to go and so I can't comment about the service or the rest of their food. We did like the bread that came with -- sort of a fluffy focaccia.
