Pizza in Vegas

This place is not on the strip or downtown. You need to venture to where the locals go to. That's where I found a great Italian pizzeria/pasta place called the Saucy Tomato located in a Strip Mall type. Cross streets are Flamingo & Sandhill on the eastside. They have 28 different types of pizza or you can create your own..even request thin crust if you so choose. And they are not one to hold back on toppings. You will definetly need to bring someone (s) with appetites for their pizzas. If you love pasta, the chef is a big time sauce man, and loves to perfect his sauces. His bolognaise sauce is to die for! Love it! Can't wait until they make their weekly night specials, because that's when the chef goes all out in his creation of the dishes. You can tell these guys put alot of TLC in what they do. Also, if you have someone in your group that has Celiac's disease, this is the place for you to eat at in terms of pizza! Pastas that are gluten free are still on the works as far as perfecting a delicious dish.

We get the 2x2 which is 2 tacos (pan fried with the beef patty style) and 2 cheese enchiladas (we get one flat and one rolled style) at dinner its $6.95 cheaper at lunch-pretty hard to beat

Thai Kitchen, north Boulder (CO)

I have been working my way through all of the Thai restaurants in Boulder (still need to try Elephant Hut and that one on the Hill), and Thai Kitchen is the first one that I would go back to. It recently opened in the space shared with North Boulder Cafe - replacing Bangkok Cuisine with a new owner, menu and presumably a new chef.

The menu isn't that extensive - curries, noodles, rice, soups, chef specials, and a few desserts. There are quite a few duck dishes, and I think that duck is one of the items that you can choose in the dishes that are "pick your protein".
We had three dishes - duck with garlic sauce, pad kee noodles, and a whole fried fish (tilapia?) with veggies (chefs special "C"). The noodles we ordered "hot", the other two "medium hot" - unusually for Boulder, the noodles were indeed quite hot but not overwhelmingly so (you could go further to "thai hot" if you chose), and the medium dishes had some mild heat. The fish was indeed whole, and had been slashed so that it could be picked apart more easily - it was crispy on the outside and tender inside. All of the dishes were flavorful, and not at all sweet (my peeve with many americanized Thai places is the use of way too much sugar). One of our party felt that the dishes were overly salty, but the other two of us disagreed (I really like salty flavors though). Prices were generally in the $10-15 range for entrees.

I would like to return in the future to sample some of their curries and soups.

I like Santacafe very much. Never had a bad meal there and I once had the most delicious, tender butter lettuce salad--wow. Their New Mexico lamb chops are very good too. My only complaint is I sometimes feel like I'm back in Boston. So many of the clientele are East Coasters all dolled up in their upscale western attire--which is fine. They look good. It's hard to avoid overhearing the talk about the latest scandals in West Palm and NYC--Bernie Maddoff seems to be a recurring theme.

The ambience is very nice and the food and service are excellent. I've been going there a few times a year for about 10-12 years.

Comes with a side of curry sauce, which may or may not contain yogurt, but you can get it without. Also can do with no bun, if you're being strict.

BLT Steak: PHX

Only a mini review, we sat on the patio overlooking the Camelback but too dark for pics.

BLT was fun.

Amuse was a rustic style chicken liver pate served with a crostini. At the time I thought why only one piece of toast but what came next was the reason.

Next was a popover. A really fun bread. Really airy. Almost reminded me of a Yorkshire Pudding. You then spread on butter and they give you sea salt to sprinkle on..They also provide the recipe for the popover which is kinda cool, so I might have a go at making them.

It is still the classic steakhouse style for the menu. Entrees are a protein only and then sides are separate.

I had the rib eye on the bone. One sauce was included free, so I got the peppercorn on recommendation. Sides of potato gratin and creamy spinach. My wife had the crab cake appetizer as her entree.

It was all really good. My steak was cooked really perfect. Especially the butchery of the meat was nice, I recently had a ribeye at Mastro's in LA and it was not trimmed as well. Steak tasted great on its own but the sauce was also good so I was alternating :)

Served with the steak was some beef marrow. This was a nice touch. Creamy, tasty, garlic and parsley.

Wife reported crab cake as good also.

Great view from the patio of the camelback, No heaters needed tonight, perfect weather.

Man, I wish I knew. I lived in Albuquerque from '74 to '75. I don't remember a fire at that time but they moved from downtown (on Central Ave, I think) to a location close to the river but further south. If I recall L&V were pretty old at that time, so unless someone else in the family picked up the torch, all may be lost to those of us lucky enough to have experienced those chile rellenos. Truly incredible. To this day I will still order poppers if they are on a restaurant menu just to bring back the memory but they rarely come close. Please let us know of any updates.

Review: Little Rangoon - Scottsdale

I wanted to give another updated review of Little Rangoon. I have probably eaten there 6 times since my previous post, and like it every bit as much after multiple visits.

I have eaten most every dish on the menu, and confirm that the dishes that are a little off the normal path, are where this place really shines. I still find the ginger and green tea salads unbelievably unique and wonderful. I also have recently fell in love with the dal curry, which is unlike an Indian Dal, in that it has a smoother texture, and is creamier. The curries have well balanced flavors, and just the right spiciness (we usually go with 3 out of 4).

I have taken many friends there, and they are all impressed with the ambiance of the place, and the overall quality of the food. My buddy today mentioned he had been looking for Singapore Noodles for a while, and this was the best he has had since he moved from New York.

This place is very much a Mom and Pop shop. The owner and his wife have always taken the time to stop at our table and chat for a while (just get either of them talking about Burma, and they really get excited). They have always thanked us for coming in, which means a lot. It makes me feel good about supporting their business.

Right now, they are running a special, of 30% off everything on the dinner menu (including drinks). I thought their prices were really low before, but with this discount, it makes it a downright steal. It is easy to get out of there for around $30 per couple (with an App, 2 entrees, and a glass of house wine each). That makes for a cheap date for adventurous eaters.

Bottom line, I can't say enough positive things about this place. The room itself is nice, clean, and actually a bit upscale (not divey at all). The owner and wife are pleasant, and provide excellent service. The food is high quality with reasonably large portions. Most important, the recipes offer unique tastes, that make taking a little culinary adventure easy. This is one of the unsung gems of our city, and hopefully more people will discover it.

frank & albert's the new casual restaurant at the biltmore is fantastic. it has an open kitchen and you can eat inside or out. its comfort food with a southwestern twist. i highly recommend the fish tacos, the fried chicken breast with mac and cheese and creamed corn, the burger, and the duck fat fries. for breakfast i loved the huevos rancheros. the bar is very lively and upbeat bar. excluding drinks tax and tip its hard to spend more than $70 for dinner.

In Santa Fe--La Boca? El Farol? Galisteo Bistro? Restaurant Martin?

Restaurant Martin is excellent. Very busy at all meals, all days so reservations are a must. Note though that it is not specifically "southwestern". It should be considered if you are thinking about the top tier Santa Fe restaurants (SantaCafe/Ristra/Coyote Cafe/Geronimo/Amavi etc). Prices are deliberately slightly below those at those previously mentioned; "nothing more than $30" being the premise.

To see menus etc here's a link: http://www.restaurantmartinsantafe.com

Cafe at the O'Keeffe is a lunch favorite after viewing an exhibit. It's independent of the museum and located next door. Food is good/competent if a bit pricey. The Plaza (good diner type food) is 2 blocks away .

Las Vegas Dinner for two $75 to spend- best bets?

Passing through Las Vegas Thursday night, would like to keep it around or under $75 for two, we are willing to share and be creative. Going to be eating on the late side so if there are any late night happy hours that would work too!

Open to anyone's suggestions, we are pretty serious foodies, trying to not spend a lot for dinner but eat as good as possible!

Thanks!

Marco's Coal Fired Pizzeria Denver Colorado

I've been to Marco's, Proto's, The Oven, and Virgilios many times. I can say without a doubt that The Oven in Bel Mar is the best of the bunch. Marcos is very good, but not amazing - if anything, their wings are the real treat. Proto's best pizza is the clam pie on fridays. Vigilio's best is the House Favorite, but at The Oven, it doesn't matter what you order, its going to be excellent. They do the basics better than anyone else. With pizza joints, its all about crust, heat, and sauce - The Oven just nails all 3.

I've got pictures on Protos and Virgiolio's pizzas on my blog: www.musteatdenver.com

No way! Why is it that every Tom, Dick and Harry thinks they can run a restaurant? Do you guys ever watch Gordon Ramsey? You might want to watch a few of those episodes before you find yourselves in the weeds.

No wonder they have a 15% off coupon in the New Mexican. Scratching this one off my list.

Thank you chowhounders. We will try to Plaza Cafe instead.

Christmas Night Birthday Dinner (LV, NV)

I would second Andre's or Alize for the kind of atmosphere and food that you are looking for. Also a couple of additional options - Bouchon's at the Venetian will fit both from an atmosphere standpoint and the fact that they do lamb awfully well. Circo at the Bellagio will take you in more of an Italian direction, but their rack of lamb is outstanding (a pecorino/thyme crust), and also excellent service and ambience for your size of party.

Filipino food in Aurora, CO (Denver)

I overheard the owner recommending chicken adobo and I think that adobo or some kind of pancit would be a safe bet for any Filipino food newcomer, please keep in mind I haven't tried theirs.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adobo#Filipino-style_adobo.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pancit

The owner seems real proud of his sisig and I agree that it is very good. It's more of the traditional variety and has a good mix of chewy, crispy textures and vinegary flavor. Just like any other Filipino dish, everyone has their own take on sisig, here are some examples of different versions:
http://www.spotsfordates.com/06/2009/updates/24-24-24-search-for-the-best-bay-area-sisig-search

Like I'd said, the sinigang didn't really do anything for me, as I like mine to be -very- sour. When I went last week, I got myself some tocilog. It is in the menu under Filipino breakfast's, Tocino. It includes fried rice with garlic, egg (made however you want), and tocino which is cured pork that is slightly caramelized/sweet cooked with a slight bit of char - enjoyed it very much!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tocino
http://philq8yummies.wordpress.com/2007/08/07/tocino-garlic-rice-and-sunny-side-up-egg-tocilog/

Finding out about Sunburst Grill has made me real happy that there are other good ethnic options outside of picking out one of the many Korean places in Aurora (I like Seoul BBQ), or driving over to Federal to grab a bowl of pho at Pho 95 - theirs is comparable to some of the best bowls of pho I've had in Houston! Hope you give Filipino cuisine a shot, please let me know what you think.
