Your favorite ice cream in Las Vegas?

Although it is a bit out of the way, Lappert's downtown at the California Hotel/Casino does a nice job, particularly with their macadamia nut and kona coffee flavors (the company is originally from Hawaii, but now has a plant in California). Although it would not be considered haute cuisine in any way, a person can go to Aloha Specialties (they face each other across the corridor) for lunch or dinner, and then Lappert's for dessert, and absolutely call themselves a Chowhound. The California gets a higher percentage of its customers from Hawaii than any other Las Vegas Hotel, which commands a level of authenticity, and both places offer good bang for the buck, which matters in tough economic times.

I repeat: There is no good, AUTHENTIC, Mexican food in Las vegas for the average Joe. Local food critic john Curtas seems to agree-

Best lunch, anywhere in Phoenix Area

Thanks all, T Cooks it was - and it was fabulous! Great prices as well. They made a wonderful cheese plate (off menu) - and a tapas platter. Excellent! Then we had the Asian salad with chicken - it was a T Cooks "original" and to be honest it wasn't all that. It was tasty, and we've been SEVERELY underwhelmed with salads in AZ since moving here - so I can see why it's rated high. Everything is relative. It was good - but not something I'd order again. Then we had a fabulous desert - creme brulee on top of a cheesecake and it was very good. Three of four isn't bad. The ambiance was very nice, and the Royal Palms is a fantastic hotel. Much nicer than the huge, luxury hotels Phoenix seems to be known for.

I will definitely go back. Oh, I wasn't too impressed with the wine BTG list - but the bottle list was decent. We just drank beer - no draft but some nice bottles.

I'll definitely be back. And I look forward to trying Arcadia Farms and Sophie's French Bistro!

We have dined at O'Keefe Cafe on two occasions, though not prior to the Opera, and have greatly enjoyed it both times. Loved the food, and the wines. Though the list is smallish, it was well thought out.

Enjoy, and please report, as it was a full year ago, since we last dined there.

FYI for fellow Tracy Dempsey fans - In between leaving the Peter K group and opening her own place, she's developing a "'tapas-style dessert bar' menu to complement the two dozen homemade ice creams at Udder Delights."

Great timing for 4th of July weekend. Wish I lived closer - I'd be sure to check it out!

"No, Denver taught me a few things about seafood - it's not necessarily one's proximity to the sea, but the shipping and how the chefs handle the food."

Absolutely. And when you mention Kevin Taylor's calamari—for me it was Black Pearl's chili-fried calamari. That may be why the place is such a sentimental fave of mine—it's one of the first places I visited here in Denver, and I still contend the dish is one of the 2 or 3 best calamari dishes I've had outside of Italy.

Thanks for everyone's advice and comments. We are going to be attending a convention which is at the Marriott but have some free time to explore on our own. Chains not at all interested in except for maybe convience, but we would much rather go to independent and local places after all. We know that everything is not close but we were not sure how spread out the city is. Bus's are perfectly fine and they look like they are easy to navigate, so again cab's don't make a difference to us. If we had more free time we would have rented a car to explore the city, but thats not the case. Just more interested in a few good meals.
I called chef du jour and they are on vacation until 7/7 and left a message to get back to us. If that works out we will go there Friday 7/17, which leaves dinner on Sunday 7/19, breakfast for Sat-Mon.

Flagstaff Dining

This is an old thread but I'll bump it up with some new opinions.

I second Pato Thai--once you go, you'll never go to any other Thai place in town. It's outstanding.

I also second Picazzo's--great salads as well as creative pizza toppings. The bagel crust pizza is our favorite.

Delhi Palace in the Walmart shopping center has good Indian food; I prefer the menu over the buffet. The buffet at the Himalayan Grill is better.

Favorite go-to place for lunch: Brandy's, up on Cedar. The Brandy Melt (turkey, green apple, green chiles, and pesto mayo on sourdough) is my standard, but the specials are always good, and they have terrific gingerbread chai, too.

Last time we tried the Matterhorn Grill, it had improved greatly over the time before--I believe they're under new ownership, and are much more authentically German than before.

I think Beaver Street has gone downhill, though it's still great for summer evenings in the beergarten.

I hear wonderful things about the new Tinderbox, though I haven't been there yet.

Just tried the new burger place on the square downtown, Diablo Burger; wasn't a fan of the seating (they said they were getting ready to put some tables outside) or the English muffin in place of a hamburger bun, but the meat was outstanding.

That's all I've got for now!

Best Carne Asada Burrito in Arizona?

Hands down by far the best carne asada burrito I ever had is out of a truck that calls itself La Parilla, in Tucson. It visits the construction sites in SE Tucson (Irvington/Houghton area). It's operated by a husband and wife team. The tortillas are handmade, and the senora informs me her recipe comes from home (Acapulco). It's dry rubbed and grilled meat accompanied by perfect saffron rice, cabbage, pico de gallo, cilantro, fresh salted avocado wedges, fresh squeezed lime, with red and green salsa and often served with a sauteed roasted jalapeno and/or carmelized onions. They're overstuffed and perfect. It's some of the best Mexican I have had in Tucson. Better even than the great El Guerro Canelo.

Dinner before Phantom?

Hi all,

I've posted on here before, and received some helpful replies (thanks!) but I wanted to post again now that I know more about my plans.

I'm coming to Vegas the first weekend in August with my family. On Saturday night (our big night out) we'll be going out to dinner to celebrate several birthdays - a 21st, 24th, and 55th - then going to see Phantom at 9:30. We're staying at the Venetian - doing breakfast at Bouchon one of the mornings.

I need a nice place for dinner Saturday night. Fun, not too stuffy, but definitely nice. Expensive is okay - I'm more interested in value. I would have loved to try to sit at the counter at L'Atelier, but there are 7 of us, so that just seems like it would be too anti-social. They aren't huge foodies, but this is our big night out. That basically translates into would-prefer-French-or-Italian-or-something-safe. Or at least not seafood or ethnic.

Help! And thanks in advance!

Also Spago in Bachelor Gulch has started to run some specials, however, life is kind of slow over there. Get a copy of the Vail Daily and see what specials are being offered that you like. Even though Beano's has a $65 special, I rather go to Splendio twice for that price. And checkout the posting by ALEDM concerning the entire valley: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/622174

We have had a wet spring so the wildflowers should be out big time. Think about doing some hikes and picnics. A nice walk is the Village to Village trail from Red Tail to Bachelor Gulch. Another hike is from the top of the lift (Spruce Saddle) to Beaver Lake and then back down to the Village.

Where to eat in Vegas (fancy)

You've chosen a great time to "go big" in Vegas. There are prix fixe specials across the board. In fact, I think for your price range you could dine at Alex which is one of the finest venues in town. They currently have a prix fixe for $89 which has a Wagyu filet as one of its choices. That would leave you with a decent amount of leeway to order wine. This is a restaurant and an opportunity not to be missed.

Bryan's BBQ - Cave Creek

I'm with you. This place needs serious improvement.

I've been once and that was quite enough for me. I went because I have a buddy who has been there twice - and only twice. He had mentioned that he really wanted to like it but it just fell short in all areas. They offer fried egg on their sandwiches, which I'm all about. Both times he ordered it the egg was over-hard. I mean really - what's the point in that? Second time he specifically requested the egg to be over-easy and it was still cooked through.

As for me, I tried it just to see if perhaps it was an off day or two. I also specifically requested the egg over-easy ( should I *really* need to, though? ) and it was close to being cooked through. I had the brisket and the meat itself was just okay, but I agree with the reheated Fry's comment. I've certainly had better in BBQ chains ... Dickey's and Shane's to be exact. The cole slaw that everyone raves about is extremely dry and flavorless - unless you count olive as an acceptable cole slaw flavor. I'm not knocking the olive for being there per se, but I just don't get it. If you want to be different then fine, but this is just bad. The sauce was nothing special either. I've made much better at home and I'm not even close to thinking of myself as a chef. The only thing I even came close to enjoying was the potato salad which was fine but is that enough to redeem? Not for me. However, I'm sure the tourists will eat it up so I wouldn't expect much to change - and that's absolutely fine.

Elmo - have you tried Tonto Bar & Grill and/or Cartwright's? They have the same owner and I really enjoy both places. It's not ground-breaking food but it's certainly tasty IMO. I've never been to San Soucci but, then again I never really hear anyone talk about or recommend it either.

Vegas: Looking for Quality with Wide(ish) Range in Price

Next month I'm getting together a group of friends (approx. 8 so far) in Vegas for a weekend (July 24-26) and I was hoping for recs for places that have quality food with a range in pricing such that someone could get away satisfied for $20-25 but others who were feeling more liberal would still have lots of fine options, as well.

One example of this idea might be Burger Bar, where I assume someone could get a burger with a few extra toppings, fries, and a beer for about $20 while someone else could do some real damage with Kobe beef, foie grois, lobster, truffle, etc. in their burger.

I'm also aware that there are many "Pre-Theater" or "Seasonal Menu" prix-fixes meant to offer inexpensive options at some of the fine dining establishments -- helpful comments down this alley would be which of these might have the best value in the $30-40 menu range?

I'm also open to suggestions of good places native LV residents enjoy. (We'll have cars.)

Thanks for any advice and suggestions.

It's been awhile, since we dined there, but those prices are probably in line with what we spent, based on inflation.

For us, and we had three meals there, the pricing was in line (even if it was a tad lower then) with what we received.

Part of this could have been because of slightly lowered expectations, though I still rate a restaurant hard, regardless.

I need to go back, as things might well have changed. Still, we have fond memories, and if they lived up to those meals, I'd still go back.

Philly cheesesteak in Utah! [moved from the Pennsylvania board]

Had lunch at the American Fork location (in the strip malls across from Costco). Pretty darned good, and WAY better than the nasty Philly Connection. I had the garlic steak sandwich. Garlic sauce was on the mild side, so I added some packaged horseradish sauce and Tabasco to pep it up. Overall quality was excellent, though the slices of cold tomato absolutely did not work in terms of taste, texture or temperature. The Herr's chips and TastyKakes were yummy. I have not had a cheesesteak in Philly, so I cannot attest to the authenticity, but this is a place I will definitely return to. Plus they have a 2nd location in South Jordan.
