Reno - The Chapel Tavern has moved and, wow, have they upgraded!

We went to a pop-up brunch here today and what fun. And great food and beverages. Chapel Tavern provided a special cocktail called The Sweetpea. It was a pea-infused simple syrup, gin and some sparkling wine. I could have drunk A LOT of those :) Coffee was provided by Magpie Coffee Roasters http://www.magpieroasters.com/ . It was a Kenyan coffee and to my non-connoisseur palate, it was the best coffee I've ever had. They don't currently have a coffee shop but are looking for space. And Mark Estee of Campo provided the food. And, 'course, he doesn't disappoint. There was a sous vide egg over a mortadella, carrot, tomato (I may be making some of this up) hash-stew type thingy. A slice of vegetable frittata on a tomatillo salsa with some kind of crumbled cheese. Some blackberries, blueberries and strawberries. And a wonderful biscuit with a red-eye cream gravy over it. All for $25. I found out about this through renotahoe.com FB. I'm looking forward to more of these events around town.

Something tells me they did that but it closed, I'm not for sure. I was in town last month (for about a month) and ate at Lerua's( that's the original Bdwy near Campbell) about 3 times, still the best chimi in town & GC tamales. Great memories, ate lunch there with Mi Compadres when we went to THS 45 some years ago. I miss those days something fierce.

http://reno.eat24hours.com/los-compadres/4406

We were out that way yesterday, saw it and a pretty full parking lot (a good sign sometimes) and decided to stop. Good food. Not the very best we've ever had but really good. We had the make your own combo of three and had chile verde, chile relleno and a cheese enchilada. All easily splittable. I think the chile verde was my fave but enjoyed each. Their margararitas are really tasty, not too tart not too sweet. The service is very friendly and efficient. We'll return when in the nabe.

New Santa Fe Coffeehouses: Capitol Coffee Company, Palace Coffee and Tea

Well, neither one will become my new go-to coffeehouse in town, but interesting additions to the city:

Capitol Coffee Company - in the former Ohori's space a few doors down from Kaune's. Coffee beans are from Desert Sun in Durango, including a couple of custom blends. Quite decent drip coffee, they have both a light and a dark roast, as well as a decaf. I was pleased that the light roast actually had enough body, I'm repeatedly amazed how many places screw up perfectly good city roast or city+ coffee by using too little coffee or too short an extraction. Espresso was a little more meh, but serviceable, their machine isn't anything super great, nor is their craft. Locally sourced edibles from Chocolate Maven (boooo) and Senor Murphy's (polite golf clap). Nice, clean, slightly antiseptic space in which to sit. Friendly folks running the place, clearly making an effort to get to know their clientele.

Palace Coffee - cute digs, meh chow. NE corner of Palace and Grant, on the second floor, they have a tiny indoor space and a lovely patio. I got my hopes up when I saw they used Seattle's excellent Caffe D'Arte coffee just like the excellent Holy Spirit a block away, but they just don't know what to do with it. Middling-at-best espresso craft out of a small, low-grade machine, blah baked goods.

My Santa Fe go-to's will continue to be Holy Spirit and Betterday on the top tier, followed by Collected Works and Downtown Subscription when the right people are working.

Here are lists of restaurants ranked by popularity in Marana and Oro Valley, places not too far from Dove Mountain:

http://www.urbanspoon.com/n/59/46576/Tucson/Marana-restaurants

http://www.urbanspoon.com/n/59/5917/Tucson/Oro-Valley-restaurants

I've been to several in Oro Valley, of which, Harvest is by far the best. It is fine dining but extremely noisy, so you have to like that sort of place.

Good luck, and I hope you enjoy your visit.

What's in the turnip soup at Vinaigrette Abq?

My Mom and I had some cream of turnip and leek soup from Vinaigrette in Albuquerque yesterday. It was amazing. We can't figure out what's in it, but I don't think it's just butter, cream, leeks, turnips and stock. (I didn't taste wine either, but maybe some other alcohol?)

The waitress didn't know and seemed scared to ask, so we just left it, but I wondered if any talented ingredient decoders might have tried this soup and might be able to tell me how I could replicate it at home.

It's so hard to find clean, properly raised, somewhat affordable animal food, besides maybe eggs. I was a vegan for many years and only started eating meat for an extreme health situation. It's still hard for me to digest, so I depend pretty heavily on yogurt. Wish I didn't have to. I think you mentioned on some other post that you have kids. I don't know how parents who want to feed their kids really well pull it off without losing their minds. Hats off to you for being so conscientious.

Linguica in ABQ?

Yes, Joe S sausages are very good. Way better grilled than made any other way, so if, like me, you don't have any way to grill them outside, I don't know that the frozen take-home ones are worth getting (or maybe I just didn't hit on just the right way to cook them properly in the oven...). We tried his regular Italian and some of his lamb and harissa sausage last year. Nice, clear flavors, extreeeemely meaty. At least a little pork is in all varieties, so not a good place for pork avoiders.

I wonder if a call to La Boca in Santa Fe might lead somewhere. I know linguica is Portuguese and La Boca is Spanish, but I'm thinking if there's anywhere in the state to get it, they'll know. Also, a friend of mine went to this place in CA some years back and raved about the linguica the guy makes. The shipping costs might be prohibitive, but maybe it's worth a look: http://www.barceloslinguica.com/

Too bad about Ziggy's BBL. Thanks for the info.

Best Frozen Green Chile ABQ/SF

You've probably left NM at this point, but for future reference I usually get my green chile from the Fresh For Less produce market on the corner of Cerrillos and St. Francis in Santa Fe. Their chile comes in little ziplock bags, either peeled or unpeeled, and in mild, medium and hot. At this time of year, I'm pretty sure they're roasting imported Anaheim peppers, but when green chiles are in season, they sell their own, both fresh and frozen. Quite tasty and some of the best prices I've seen in town, although I've found I prefer to buy the chiles unroasted and to roast them myself on the grill or in the wood stove. It gives them a really nice, smokey flavour.

Agreed! I had seen this place while driving by, and ended up shopping there several times when the COTM was _660 Curries_, and since. They had almost everything I needed, and at good prices. I've always been offered quick, friendly help. The guy even looked up an ingredient on the internet for me, to determine whether what they had was what I needed with a different name. However, I've never seen another customer, so I'm a bit worried about their long-term success. (Excited to hear about the scapes -- I'll have to swing by!)

I have now been to Bouche three times.
I'd waited for the early jitters and trendy followers to move along, and was wowed.
I am a huge fan of Parisian Bistro food, and this was as good as I have experienced in Paris.
So far, my favorites would be, starters, the seared fois gras.
The Halibut was excellent, the Steak Frites was wonderful, although as good as the fries are, I think I'd opt for the truffle fries.
Desserts really shine, the apple tartin is perfect.
As are the profiteroles. The seating is cozy, about 40, so good to make a res.
Altough the community table is fun, with a great view of the kitchen activity.
Good for Chef Dale. A real win.

They opened not long ago after what seemed forever with a sign saying coming :) They're on Mt. Rose, east of S. Arlington, where Sezmu used to be. I don't know if their place in the Reno airport is open yet but that seems to offer a great option for travelers.

The pizza is good. Not the VERY best pizza I've ever had - those spots are reserved for Campo and Silver Peak - but quite good and we'll definitely be returning. They aim to please. Thick or thin crust? A little less sauce? Remove an ingredient? Not a problem. And they have a very interesting beer selection. Bob had "coffee porter.." I had a sip (not a beer drinker) and you definitely could smell and get a hint of tasted of coffee. I just had a house red. They have a bar with a couple of tvs and the staff is very friendly. We're happy to see this addition to our neighborhood and I hope others will check it out and support it.

ETA: They also sell slices which it find appealing and could be a super option at the airport.
