asian options in Copper Square (PHX)

Thai Basil is essentially the same as Thai Elephant, so no, it's not worth a two-mile train ride unless you need to go up to Midtown for some other purpose (e.g. a drugstore)

Thai Hut and Wild Thaiger -- That's hard to say. I wouldn't say they're demonstrably better or worse than Thai Elephant, just different. You may want to review menus online just to see if there are dishes that appeal to you particularly at once place over another.

Wild Thaiger menu: http://www.wildthaiger.com/
Thai Elephant menu: http://www.thaielephantaz.com/
Thai Hut menu not available online

When it comes to Chinese (primarily Cantonese) food, however, I do think a short train ride to the north is in order. China Chili and the Prime seem much better than any of the Chinese options in the heart of Downtown.

Beer Joints? LV

Yardhouse probably has one of the best selections of brews but, for me, the only catch is the "corporateness". I do enjoy their outposts but I tend to prefer places with character a little more. The Freakin' Frog is great example.

I always enjoyed Crown & Anchor. It isn't flashy but it certainly has character. Right next to the UNLV campus so there are usually a fair share of students in there. They have, I think, almost 30 beers on tap. Not sure how regularly they change them up but as long as they have Boddington's on draft, no need to change for me.

Maybe not the largest selection but certainly someplace that everyone should visit at least once.

NY're looking for a cool beer Bar in Vegas (on the strip?)

I'll be in Vegas in late March for a conference at the Riviera, am staying at Villas at Polo Tower. Would any of the places on this board posting be good for my 6-yr-old and me to get together with his godfather, who is probably staying at the Sahara? He took us to his local pub in Dursley, England, with his family and is pretty serious about beer these days. I am a vegetarian. The kid is a kid. None of us likes smoke. We enjoy sitting outside as long as we're not right next to a road or parking lot. Walking a mile or so is no problem, as long as they're decent streets.
Any and all suggestions, including best time of day for our stopover, would be appreciated!

Just a warning -- Lotus is likely to be overrun during CES (although i realize attendance will be lower than usual). Definitely call for a reservation on the weekend.

Some other cheapish places that I love:

La Mexicana for antojitos, especially the tacos, tortas, and specials (it's on Decatur and Twain). Kilroy's for hamburgers, Settebello (in Summerlin) for pizza and salad, Magura (Bulagarian in LV -- this isn't the world's best food, but it's a pleasant respite from the crowds elsewhere). Just a few offhand.

Scottsdale/Phoenix Great dinners

Hi Jelly Belly,

Where are you all staying, and will you have a rental car? Phoenix/Scottsdale/Tempe is very spread out, so it helps to know if geography is an issue.

Also - do you have any price point concerns, or is price not an issue?

In general, for pasta, I would say Marcellino or La Locanda are my personal favorites. Caffe Boa (on Mill Ave in Tempe) also has fantastic pasta choices and it's a great restaurant overall. There are many other options, so let us know more of your preferences and we can narrow it down.

For celebratory dinner on Sunday, what type of food are you all looking for? And scene? And price? That will help us help you!

Dinner Recs - Phoenix?

I think Tempe might be a bit crazy after the race...I think Cowboy Ciao is perfect, or NOCA, two of my absolute favorites in town.

One thing about NOCA is I believe the entire menu won't be available...which could be good or bad, just be aware...it won't be the full NOCA experience.

Sea Saw is a must-try, and feels like a "treat" place. Can't go wrong there.

Coup des Tartes is fantastic. Love it. Cozy, tiny, great food. BYOB, so if you drink wine you'll want to plan ahead.

Tarbell's is another great choice. Mark Tarbell is an Iron Chef winner and his popular-with-the-locals restaurant is just great and consistent.

I work at the resort where the restaurant is located, so I can't actually recommend Prado per Chowhound rules, but I am sure they would be happy to welcome you. :)

Have fun and enjoy your visit!

DebbieW,
Thanks for the feedback - I was wondering why I wasn't getting any responses - I wanted to be as specific as possible so it would be easier to respond - perhaps not?

I'm guessing that for Saturday, $50pp would be good, and for Friday, $25pp would be good - for FOOD ONLY. With alcohol, I think we'd be thinking $80-100pp on Saturday and $50pp on Friday. Does that help?

With some much volume sometimes (espically the number for dinner on friday and saturday night and sunday lunch) I can see why it hasn't been great as it has lived up to in the past sometimes. I'll admit, I dine out during the week and not the weekends. Its the stand point that Anthony Bourdian and I agree on.

And the tortellini in cream sauce was probably asking for trouble since they do not make this in house. BTW, I have also travelled in Italy, lived in New York (and Bangkok and Tokyo), and like to make my own fresh pasta -- not that any of this makes me an expert on anything.

If you want a local spot to sit and read the paper and drink some coffee, check out Mama Java's. For a greasy spoon with hearty breakfasts, Ranch House Grill. Personally I love La Grande Orange nearby, which is a mini-market / pizzeria / fast casual with good quality offerings; parking is a bit of a pain but they have a nice patio on the side to sit out if the weather is nice. Cafe ZuZu at the nearby Valley Ho, which is somewhat of a Scottsdale landmark hotel, does a great breakfast / brunch; another spot that will let you sit outside near the pool. If you're in a soup / sandwich type of mood, Acacia Cafe has two homemade soups daily and a variety of sandwiches. To grab a beer and possibly a game, there is a pub Wally's about a mile away; they have a checkboard with b-t-g wines and half bottles. There is also a cigar store a few doors away. The Vig would probably offer you a more upscale bar experience and a livelier crowd. All of these places are within 2-4 miles of Royal Palms on the Phoenix side (except ZuZu).

I think Bill has you on the right track for the other meals.

Have fun!

Although still not cheap, I love Roarking Fork's happy hour. For a upscale dining experience you can go sit at the bar have a delicious and filling meal with a cocktail or two for 60 dollars a couple by sharing a few appetizers and an entree. Happy Hour can be slightly crazy sometimes but in the summer they have happy hour all night every night and every Sunday they have happy hour all night too.

Clovis, NM, restaurants

Clovis is an interesting town. I have driven through/stayed overnight many times driving back and forth from Santa Fe to Austin. It seems like its heyday had long past. Downtown looks like mainsteet USA from the fifties, but a lot of the buildings are abandoned, and kind of run down.
One time I ate at BBQ place on the north end of town. Pretty mediocre, It seemed like a chain place. For breakfast I went to a small mexican place called espriga del oro. It was pretty good, and also affordable. All of the construction workers were there also, fueling up before a day at the job site.
But my favorite place is a Hamburger/hot dog place called Twin Cronnies Drive Inn. It's nothing fancy, really a divey kind of drive up burger stand, but a good old fashioned type of road cuisine.
Of course you'll find your typical American Highway Chain type places too. All I did was look in the phone book and drive around for a little while. Definately not a culinary mecca, but it might be possible to find a few diamonds in the rough.
Good Luck and have fun. Salt

Would especially appreciate comparison (foodwise and pricewise) to branches in Vancouver and Rosemead. The branch in Rosemead was one of the pioneers in bringing upscale, modern dim sum and Hong Kong style seafood to the San Gabriel Valley.

SteakHouse in Las Vegas...

Hmmm ... well, maybe that wasn't quite the right way to put it but I stand behind what I wrote. Maybe I should have said that in order to get the full Prime experience you have to either be a who's-who or be there when there are other "factors" involved.

I know it sounds cryptic and, believe me, I wish I could go into specifics but I won't/can't here.

I'm glad you had a great time and it is an elegant atmosphere if you like that kind of thing but , for the most part, unless you are famous/wealthy/powerful there's a good chance that you'll only have an average experience there.

... and I'm sure there are other 'hounds who have had similar experiences to what you describe but keep in mind that's an extremely small percentage of their business.

There are people who love Prime and can't fathom a better place to have a meal. Great for them. But you know what they say about opinions ... mine happens to be that there are better steakhouses in Vegas in which to spend an evening. That's all I was really trying to say.

You did not do badly. We really enjoyed both higher-end restaurants there, Pahu i`a and Alan Wong's Hualalai Grille. Some have not had the wonderful experience that we did, at AW's, but our meal was spectacular, as was the service. My wife had stated that she will not go back to the Big Island, unless I take her to the Four Seasons.

I feel your pain on PofW at the Del. I had just recommended it, when I was informed that it was no longer there. I'm not clear on the replacement, but doubt that it can compete with our experiences there. We've lost some nice fine-dining restaurants in our resorts in PHX, as well. Sign of the times, I guess.

Again, thanks,

Bones (DEN) - Did anyone try it at the opening last night?

I did. The place, as expected, needs some time to figure itself out a bit I think - I only say that because I expected a more casual restaurant atmosphere. The service, though lovely, was a bit too formal in style and didn't seem to really fit the noodle bar idea IMO. I think I'd be more comfortable if they'd loosen up a bit, or maybe next time I'll sit at the bar instead of a table. Or maybe it was just opening night jitters for the waitstaff. Cocktails were overpriced and not very good, but best of the three I tried was the green tea one. The food however, was excellent - a few standout appetizers were the black cod/pork belly tempura, roasted bone marrow (if you're into that sort of thing), fried shishito peppers, and pork belly buns (definitely preferred them to the suckling pig buns but who doesn't like pork belly?). These apps ranged about $7-12 as I recall. The pickled vegetables were good also. For mains, I had the ramen with lobster and edamame - it was wonderful though not what I expected at all. It was very rich, and more French/Italian-influenced (if you subbed out the edamame for peas) really than Asian, with more of a sauce than a soup, which is more what you'd expect from a true Asian ramen. It was $16, but with a decent amount of perfectly done lobster. I tried my neighbor's udon - also good, and another neighbors spicy egg noodles with chicken - this one actually probably the most "Asian" of the bunch, and only about $9, I think.

Didn't try the soft serve ice cream, priced at $5 a serving. I was full, but I also thought that was a bit much for soft serve. If anyone tries it, let me know if it's worth it!

As an aside, I was there with my toddler daughter and extended family (6 of us in all). I'm a fan of Frank's restaurants and haven't been able to hit Mizuna or Luca lately, and I was thrilled when I thought he was opening another "casual" restaurant, and a noodle bar at that! Thought it might be relatively kid-friendly, like Osteria, but the place again felt a bit too formal for me to feel comfortable bringing her, too quiet maybe - and that may change as it gets popular. It's also NOT a good place for groups - anything more than 4 is hard to seat, and there are only a few tables. Frank's wife Jackie was a trooper however and agreed to pull 3 tables together just for our group - Thanks!! I'd recommend dining with just one other person and sitting at the bar, where you can watch the chef at work!

All in all, I'd definitely go back, but maybe on a date night with the hubby instead! And I'll drink wine instead...

I have been to both Bouchon and Tableau many times.

I think they are both great.

The Kobe Beef short ribs and eggs are by far the best thing i have ever had between both places. The potato cake thingy is so tasty. They did something to the scrabbled eggs to make them extra tasty.

Denver on New Year's Eve...? [Moved from Midwest Board]

I wouldn't say Domo has "no" sushi. They have what I'd call "deconstructed" sushi in the form of donburi bowls: sashimi, sprouts, ginger, etc. are served on top of a small bowl of sushi rice. You can see photos at the menu pdfs found at the link above. With every entree you get seven Japanese country style side dishes, plus miso.

It's a delightful place and it's worthwhile to visit the adjoining museum and garden - the garden is of course better in the summer.

If you're getting there by light rail get off at the Auraria campus station and cross Colfax.

i love this place. ive only been once, but it is sooooo cute.

its on the corner of 7th ave and campbell, where some takeout pizza place was, then it was going to be asian fusion, then melrose cafe, now bantu bistro..

i had the ndole with chicken and fufu..the ndole is like creamed spinach stew with ground peanuts..it was fresh, herbacious, tasty, and the portion was ENORMOUS..it came with a handful of fried plantains, which i used to scoop up some fufu and eat with the ndole..

the fufu - it was like a more starchy garlicky mashed potato...again, HUGE portion, and absolutely yummy....

the place is tiny, the owner is emme, a HUGE guy who was so super nice, i'm just cheering for this little spot and i hope they make it...

my friend had the groundnut stew and said it was a whole lotta peanut-y goodness..

can't wait to go back and try more :)

they also have goat and oxtail on the menu. yummmy!

Ugh....yea they put the sign up back in like April 08 and it's been mocking me ever since! (I live way too close to the new location for my own good)

I understand that the location had nothing in the way of plumbing or anything. They had to go in and pretty much set the place up from scratch. There are some pics of the build in progress at their Myspace page....kind of interesting.

La Madonna? (Las Vegas)

A quick post: DH and I had dinner there last Friday night. It is a small place (maybe 10 to 12 tables...) nicely decorated with a small bar. I would definitely make reservations if I went. We were early (before a show) and took advantage of happy hour: half price margaritas and apps. The margaritas are good...fresh lime juice. They have several specialty ones, but we stuck to the house version...at 3 bucks for a large margarita with fresh lime juice how can you go wrong?

There are definitely some tasty items on the menu. Its billed as "avant-garde" Mexican food, whatever that is...and there are unusual items. DH had the grilled chicken (its in a pomegranate sauce)...it was tasty and juicy. The best part was the sweet corn tamale it came with...you can also order those ala carte. Yum! I had chicken enchiladas...they were tasty (green sauce) and what I would call DF style...ie not Tex Mex cheese glop all over. They are served strictly a la carte, as is most of the menu...so things could add up if you add rice and beans. And it was a very large serving: three overstuffed enchiladas. I would have preferred two. I had as a side the "street corn" which is kind of a variation on elotes: the corn is taken off the cob and then mixed with lime, chili, and mayonaise. Tasty, but a little too strong on the lime IMO.

Actually, the best part of the evening (besides the margaritas) was the trio of salsas brought with chips...all were wonderful. And since there are several apps that look good I think I'll go back after work someday and have apps and margaritas.....

Its waaayyyy off the beaten track (on S. Ft. Apache) but worth a trip...especially if you are anywhere near that part of town. Service was very friendly and accommodating.
