First Visit to Sage, Edmonton River Cree Resort

raider:

Going from memory, the appetizer option was divided by the number of selections requested and priced accordingly, 2, 4 or six. May have the number of portions wrong. Smoked salmon was also on the list but my wife does not eat fish and I was concerned that the flavour might affect others things she would eat. My concern, was not necessary as everything came attractively plated and divided so that for example, the ceviche, would not mix with the proscuitto, etc.

The steak frites not surprisingly came with the frites in addition to the NY Strip loin and pepper sauce.

My t-bone and the other grilling options were striclty a la carte. Steak alone and you ordered the wild mushrooms, fries, asparagus, mac & cheese etc.

Edmonton RROTM - December discussion

I figure lets start the talk a little earlier this month.

We have January all ready set as L2 Grill, but the consensus is not to go here in December due to Christmas at the Mall....scarey!

So the discussion can start again for December. The preference is for New, but that is not always going to be possible.

I would like to say, lets not go ethnic this time as we have had 2 ethnic restaurants in a row

I would like to suggest the Red Star Pub. Someone mentioned that the chef there is doing some really interesting things. Also the location is central, and casual, with people being very busy during this season, popping in for a quick bite or beer & appie is possible.

Any other thoughts??

Kensington gossip - Calgary

Miss L and I went to *Delicious Thai* in Kensington for lunch yesterday. The deep fried chicken wings stuffed with pork were really nice, flavorful and very different for a Thai place. We both liked that. The chicken Pad Thai was very disappointing. It was dry, very light in color, and had an overwhelming fish sauce flavor that just wouldn't go away. Pretty sure there was MSG too, as my head began to act up almost immediately after lunch. This Pad Thai was nothing like any other I've had. Linda agreed. The service was nice and friendly.

Plus one for the Patisserie Lebeau cinnamon buns but they are as described by selena -- much more "savoury" than the gooey North American style. The ones at Solly's are pretty decent for the gooier approach, I think, and they are closer to you.

My Chocolate Tree is pretty great too -- I picked up some of their coffee-bean crisps at Make It Vancouver last weekend - yum. They also have gorgeous truffles that I would have had for Xmas giving but they are made with such good ingredients and no preservatives that they only have a shelf life of three weeks. May swing by to pick some up on the 12th... thanks for the heads up.

Made it to Bulk Barn today on their opening day. Very busy around 6 pm. Don't know if it was word of mouth, the Edmonton Journal article today, or all the Eastern transplants itching for some good bulk products. The store seemed a little bit smaller than those I am used to in Ontario and the Maritimes, but the selection all seemed to be there so maybe I am mistaken. Anyway, it is great that it is finally open.

Cleopatra999, they did have a selection of organic products in bulk, more than they used to.

We had the lamb stuffed olives, chicken confit risotto and chocolate brulee and we thoroughly enjoyed everything. I would definately be back. I think if it were in an area with a little more walking traffic the place would be quite busy but it was refreshing to be able to hear your company!

Went to Snow Palace tonight. Great find, thanks. The "other" menu is written in English and Chinese here and is at the back of the regular menu. The very last page is all Chinese, I'll drag my son out to work through that part with me. They also have a page of group dinners.

We ordered way too much. Didn't try the peking duck which makes me a highjacker. Sorry, but if the peking duck is up to the standard of the rest of the food it should be good.

and then there was the time when I took my boss and wife for dinner for his b-day. he is very well-educated, looks wealthy, is white, etc., and we had IMPECCABLE service. best i've ever had there.

but i just don't tip when they give me crap service. and, i haven't been back there in probablly 3 years because of this.

Samosas wholesale in Vancouver or thereabouts...

Just a tip I got from my parents recently: Because we don't have many good choices (with regards to budget friendly samosas) in Downtown Vancouver, buy them half cooked/fried (most sweet shops will sell them to you this way) and store them in your freezer. When you have unexpected guests finish them off in the oven 375 for 20 minutes and you have samosas that taste as if you just bought them freshly fried without a trip out to either little india...

Vegetarian Italian/Carribean - intriguing. I was wondering why they were closed for a month and found the cbc story. Apparently the owner is a single mom and only had one part timer, and when the owner came down with the flu they had to close, took her the month to recover.

Cactus Club at the West Edmonton Mall might suit your criteria. We went a few weeks ago on a Friday night...very busy, but the food was reasonably priced, tasty, and fairly nice space.

Decent pizza in Vancouver

I have not checked out Nook but have heard really great things about Marcello's. My favourite pizza for thin crust and great toppings is without a doubt Sciué. http://tinyurl.com/yepw54b That being said, I'm not a huge meat lover (though their smoked salmon and shrimp pizza are two of my favourites) and I also don't love a lot of cheese on my pizza.

Old Bread Factory

Ethnic resturant store names just slay me. There are some things that just don't translate well.

For example, The Old Bread Factory... What do you think of when someone says old bread to you? Stale.. crusty... dry...musty... ok we're getting a little off track but you know what we mean.

If it didn't have the word bread in it... we might have passed it by. A closer look, we see underneath ... the original mexican style. Ok we might have something here.

Mexian pastry in Edmonton. Ok that's different. I didn't see a lot of bread but I did see a whole lot of pastries and cookies. On the cash counter they had fried dough balls made of cheese.

Let's just talk about the cookies. We had an orange-chocolate cookie which was a hard type of cookie and another cinnamon cookie called... i think Piedra.. I can't remember all I remember was there 3 fillings pineapple, strawberry or bavarian cream. They were both the size of small bread plates... Ok I guess that's were bread comes in.

The Old Bread Factory. It's new. In fact only 4 months old.

Ah, that's the one spot on Gaetz/50th that I was forgetting. Glad to hear you found somewhere to go. I'll have to give it a try myself.

Today I'm off to find La Tienda Latina and see what gems it has to offer. It's be nice to find a place nearby that does ceviche so I don't need to drive down to Salsita :)

The only Surinamese restaurant I have been to that was not in either Suriname or The Netherlands was in NYC. food-wise it was allright, but it was more for being back in Suriname for a moment than the food itself that I liked this place:
