I'm getting excited for the return of the Nutcracker Market. It will be at the Reliant Center from Nov. 12-15.

I find some of my favorite foodie gifts at this market. A few of my favorites are Cherry Republic for all things Cherry, Susie's South 40 for amazing frozen toffee, and Loredanna's for marinated cheese.

Who else has favorite merchants or goodies?

There is an organic farm on FM 2920 at Park Road in Tomball as well. You should be able to find the freshest vegetables within season at these locations. If you "Google" fruit and vegetable farms+Cypress, Texas", you should get a list of them.

Ages ago there used to be an ice creame place on Westheimer at...Bellair? North side of the street, well, west of the Galleria anyway, and it had a three chocolates, or tres scalini (sp?) ice cream. Oh my goodness it was divine. My best friend and I used to go for a friday night movie and then hit them up for a cone and then cruise Westheimer in my mom's Le Sabre. Can anyone remember what it was called and if it has relocated or if there's another place with ice cream/gelato as good as what I remember?

My husband and I have been on that quest ourselves. We recently read the list from Texas Monthly for the 50 best burgers in Texas. The Grape was listed at the top, if not number one. We have eaten at a few of the places on the Texas Monthly list. The best one so far that we have had is a little combo grocery store/gas station in Ellinger, Texas called Hruska's. FANTASTIC good old fashion burgers with great flavor. They also make some killer kolaches (both sausage and fruit). Hruska's knows what they are doing for sure. It is on Hwy. 71 North about 5 miles if you exit from Interstate 10. Don't blink or you will miss the little intersection where it is.

If I lived in Gonzales, I'd definitely be a regular.

I believe this is place! They are now operating as a mobile food establishment out of Desoto. The food was real nice man…I had the combination plate with Jerk chicken and oxtail, rice and peas, and Caribbean collard greens. Man it was nice, like the Calaloo with the coconut cream, and it had the right spice to it. Check out their website www.kool-runnin.com. The jerk chicken reminded me of chicken from back home in St. Anns Ocho Rios! Oxtail- the best ever- the meat browning sauce is real nice.

Peace and one love

Dining in Dallas

Simply not true. While the majority (but certainly not all) of prime beef come from the upper midwest, distributors like Allen Brothers do source from Texas as well. Sitting in the restaurant, it’s difficult to know where your steak was raised. There are also local smaller restaurants, like Tillman’s (last time I asked her) that source their beef from local ranchers when they can. Not to mention the mom and pop independent ranchers raising great beef, it may not show up at Morton's but you can't say it isn't very good.

And all the wonderful BBQ in south Texas is from within state.

oI got a Texas chocolate pecan cake from Astons, what a disaster. It fell apart, no one liked it, some of my guests spit it out. There wasn't enough dobasch icing, the cake was dry. I called back the next day to complain, and the clerk there said the proprietor doesn't talk to customers, wouldn't give me my money back, only store credit. I told them I was from out of town but that's their policy. When I was there to pick it up, there was yelling and shouting from the back, a lot of chaos going on, children yelling at an older lady. I do not recommend this bakery to anyone that enjoys good food for a fair price.

Best picks in Downtown Fort Worth?

Downtown is mostly yuppie chains....head to Haltom City for Asian. I recommend Thai Belknap. Good food, sweet service, and BYOB. http://thaibelknap.com/

I second the Magnolia Ave recommendation. It's the closest you can get to Austin without leaving Tarrant County.

thanks for the correction. I know its not all tomato tomatoe when it comes to the tex mex references. the pappas I went to was in an old red shack by the airport. And it was kinda creepy in my book but heard an amazing marvin gaye song on the radio!

and now I'm thinking of churrascos again. soooo good.

[DAL] "The Carrot" at Bob's Steak & Chop House

I know there is a love/hate relationship with the infamous carrot that is served with the entrees at Bob's Steak and Chop House, but I happen to like it.

Does anybody know how they are made?

I can speculate better than most people on how they are made but I'm looking for somebody who actually knows.

San Marcos Good Eats?

TAP ROOM

Hands down the best burger in town. Great place to try a new beer and watch sports. Most students in SM go to Palmers for special occasions but its not going to win an award any time soon. Overpriced not so great. They did have a great happy hour when I went to school there.

Also look into Root cellar and san marcos river pub and grill ... those were my favs.

I don't know shakes in your area but thought I'd share with you my "after dental surgery" favorite recipe:

1 container yogurt
1 equal part fruit juice of choice
1 small banana
1 cup frozen fruit (to eliminate pointy ice) but avoid fruits with seeds

Blend and enjoy.

Ruggles Bakery (Houston)

texasredtop - You posted exactly the sandwich that I ordered. My friend ordered the reuben. Both sandwiches were good enough but not enough to make us drive 45 minutes to get there again. The dill potato salad could have used more dill.

On the other hand, the chocolate cake with mint mousse was so good I'd drive for days to have it again! I did think that the ice cream and plate sauce were a bit too much. Did I mention that I loved the mint mousse?

El Rancho, Fiesta, Terry's, or El Mariachi are all the supermarkets around that cater to the Hispanic populations. I am not sure what some of the Carnival stores turned into. Like DD said you might could find it at DFM. I know McKinney, Lewisville, Grapevine, Coppell and the smaller farmers markets do not have any hispanic produce. Exception being jalapenos when they were in season.

If you have a constant need and I am not trying to be snarky about this but next year I would get several plants and grow it in a planter (if not in the ground). Harvest it regularly and pack the herb into ice trays, put in some water, and freeze it into cubes. Thus would allow you the chance to use it in the "off" season. You could also buy extra when you find it and freeze it.

Just found out that our very favorite restaurant of all times is gone! I went on line to make reservations for our 22nd Anniversary in December. There is no other restaurant that can meet the mark in Texas. Every experience was personal, not snobby, but absolutely amazing. I think I am seriously going to go into a very deep depression! The mark has been set so high and now there is nowhere to go to fulfill it.
