http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/640474

Here's a discussion of a Chinese restaurant called M&T in Flushing, Queens, that for some reason auto-links to a restaurant called Il Pasticcio in Savannah, Ga. It's been doing this for some time. I bring it up now only because someone just reminded me of it by updating the thread.

This one makes Chow.com look especially stoopid. If that's a concern, the site crew should fix it.

Restaurant listings: general & specific issues

Thanks, yes, I read that wrong. Can you tell I'm concerned about a bunch of micro-posts feeding from the R&B interface to the boards? Previously Chow HQ had said that it would wait and see before enabling that feature, and I hope that it will be looked at carefully before letting it happen.

I'll mention that during I've been experimenting with using the "review of a specific restaurant" check-off when posting on the boards. Sometimes it takes, but mostly it doesn't. During this site speed slow-down recently, I'll get the spinning when it looks like my message won't post. When I refresh, it's there, but won't have fed to the R&B page. Here's one example, and for this one I tried to link to the restaurant in my reply, but that didn't take either even after a couple days.

"can't save edits" monster rears its ugly head again

>>> some kind of glitch in original post

No, some sort of software glitch. For some reason I have never figured out some posts become un-editable. This is particularily true (and annoying) of Lists where maybe 1 out of 20 list items cannot be edited and the only thing to do is delete them and add them again. Sometimes the list description can't be edited either.

This is true for this list where I would have liked to change the title to include the words "Part 1" All I get is the red "saving" which after five or more minutes goes away and the unedited title is restored.

No ability to link to Wine Country restaurants since Oct 07, 2009

I thought I'd include the year in the title just to keep track of how long this will take to fix. As of this post it has been seven weeks.

On 10.07/2009 Chowhq wrote

"Thanks for this feedback. The problem is that the link to a place options are limited to 60 miles from SF, which we now see is far too small a radius, so we will alter that so that healdsburg and other SFBay Area places beyond 60 miles can be found. "

On 10/27 a poster wrote

"Hello, any timetable for fixing this? You've shut out those of us in the North Bay/Wine Country and South Bay/Gilroy from using links.

Fwiw, the border between Sonoma County and Mendocino County, which is the northern edge of the SF Bay Area region is approx. 100 miles from San Francisco. The southern boundary of Santa Clara County is about 80 miles from SF."

So the tech team has had the parameters that would work for the Bay Area for a few weeks now.

Is it a big problem to fix? Is it even on the list to be fixed?

http://www.chow.com/new_posts/12 (my home board)

There's no link to view older discussions... so on a busy board like Boston, if I don't check it at least twice a day or so, I miss older threads. And I am absolutely positive this has been a problem forever.

The other way you can read the board looks similar but isn't, at

And that show 50 most recent threads, and then you'd click on "Next>>" or the numbers to see older discussions.

Restaurant missing Opentable link

I've entered a number of records for restaurants whose web sites happen to link to OpenTable. As a convenience to Chow users, I've gone ahead and added the OpenTable link to the records, as you have.

But I don't see it as our job to monetize the site. When site employees run across records with OpenTable links that don't include the Chow referral info, they can add it themselves.

New Topics Weirdess at the Western Canada Board

Things showing up in the sticky topics section is a bug, but not a serious one -- they're not actually sticky, they just appear in that section for a couple of hours. I'm not sure about the random chronological order issue, though. The first topic is actually sticky, while things underneath it appear to be in the proper order, at least right now.

Too many stickys!

It's a small bug for users who use some browsers and aren't using the same time settings as the servers. It has no real effect on the functioning of the site. Engineering's looked at it a couple of times, but fixing it proved ... complicated ... and since it wasn't actually changing anything function-wise, they've never gone through with a fix.

When I try to reply to a post, it just scrolls up to the top of the thread and there's no place for me to reply. I've logged out and back in again but it's the same. Been going on for about an hour or more.

Links not working?

I can't seem to successfully get a post through with a restaurant link at all - the rest of the reply goes through, but the circle keeps spinning and the link never shows up in the post.

Example:

http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/651825#5150069

This post should have a link for Picasso that I added using the checkbox.

How can I turn off the over-eager Auto Link feature?

We've removed the link. The problems with the Auto LInk feature are being discussed in other threads on this board. There's no way to turn it off, but the Engineers have been made aware that it's not working the way it should.

WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG HERE??

Okay, RicRios beat me to it. I'm guessing there are some tags in a TextEdit document that the server isn't allowing, but posting it into a plain-text-only email strips those out and makes the file digestible. Anyway, the review is now on the LA Board, under "My Saint Amour review".

Arrrrg !!! ... !!! My review is no longer linked to the restaurant record

I'm sorry if this is brought up somewhere else, but while response time is better than yesterday it is till not too good for me and it will take me hours to read everything on site talk and techinical help

Last night I did a reprt for Commis and gave it five stars.
http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/663205

BTW, I'm leaving all the spelling errors in here. When I type it takes a while for the actual letters to show up now and some are getting dropped. So that's why the line above says rprt not report.

I sweated over that report. It seems if you edit a restaurant the name of the restaurant is left blank in the review section. The stars are there. The check box is there. But when you save and don't notice the lack of a restaurant name, it gets dropped from the restaurant database.

So each and everytime I saved I made sure that restaurant name was in the restaurant box.

Thins morning I signed on and there were some comments. Not only was Commis linked another restaurant showed up called "My Favorite Cafe" Ok, fine ... someone must have typed that phrase and there apparantly is a SF cafe called that. I can't find the words "my favorite cafe: either in my report or any of the replies ... but whatever. It was hours after I could edit my review.

As of this morning, there was a link in the report to Commis and looking at the restaurant record my report was there with a five stars. All is well with the world.

BUT NO

I come back tonight. I read a topic on Techincal Help and I'm going to use the example of "My Favorite Cafe" which is showing up all over the SF board, as an example of links gone wrong.

I compen up my report. ALL links are gone including Commis. I look at the Restaurant record. NO five star reviews.

So I write this up. I'm going to link to the restaurant record.

Now the stars appear though the link is still missing in my report. I get out of the restaurant record again. The link to my review is gone. Open, close, open close ...etc. Stars show up sometimes, other times not. The only constant is the actual report no longer has the link to Commis displayed

Is it possible that when someone replies to a report and removes the link to the restaurant name in their reply, in this case Commis, that the link to that restaurant record is removed from the original post and all replies?

I got that spam too, but it's not at the address I currently use for Chowhound, it's at the address I used to use when we had the option to input our email addresses and have them show on our posts. So if that's the address you used to use, it probably got harvested like mine did.
