I had the same problem up until an hour ago. It was so bad that I hated to come on this site.
Downloaded Foxfire and problems are over.
Have to get used to a new browser though.

website horribly broken

Hrmm. That's an unusual problem. The first can be just an issue of where you start -- if you go to the sign-up page and then to the login page, it'll direct you back to the sign-up page since that's where you came from. But if you came from the front page and got prompted to log in, it should send you back there. Can you give me a specific walkthrough of what you're experiencing? The URL of the page you start on, the URL of the page you're on when you're entering your login information, and the URL of the page you end up on afterwards would probably help.

For the latter problem, can you be more specific about where? A copy of the URL you started from and the one you're getting redirected to would help there, as well.

Search function is broken

Finally got back to this post (I haven't had much online time recently). Thanks for the quick reply, Jacqulynne!

Sure enough, quotes seem to work now - I had given up on using them in the past - but this search example still demonstrates the problem: Most of the hits are on "lo and (behold)" instead of "los andes". Luckily, there are only 15 hits, so I can actually find what I'm looking for - in this instance.

My main comment still stands - the inexact/approximate matching makes the search function unusable, unless one is lucky enough to be searching for a unique word.

As an example, here's my attempt (using quotes) to find "Friendly's" restaurants on the east coast. The results include "friend", "friends", "friend's", "friends'", and "friendly". Because these words occur so often in so many posts, I can't tell if there are any posts about Friendly's.

http://chowhound.chow.com/search?search[query]=%22friendly%27s%22&search[class_names]=Topic&Search.x=47&Search.y=17&search[from]=10+years+ago&search[to]=now&search[sort_mode]=descending&search[boardgroup_id]=6&search[board_id]=

Is there a way to search for an exact word or phrase, without the fuzzy matching? If not, the search function is so unusable that I would call it broken.

Thanks,
Anne

I remember some time ago, you could do a search and the item you were looking up would be highlighted so it was easy to find in the thread.

Did this feature disappear? I hope not. It was easy to just scroll down to find the name of a place you were interesting in researching without having to read through the entire topic.

If you can still do this, how can I find this feature?

Thanks.

On the search results page, there's an option to limit your results to once section of the site. Or you can go directly to the search page and start by setting those options: http://www.chow.com/search

Here's an example of a search for 'chicken' in Ingredients:
http://www.chow.com/search?search[query]=chicken&search[class_names]=Ingredient&Search.x=0&Search.y=0&search[from]=10+years+ago&search[to]=now&search[sort_mode]=relevance

And here, using the title option for just the ingredient entry named chicken:
http://www.chow.com/search?search[query]=title%3Achicken&search[class_names]=Ingredient&Search.x=0&Search.y=0&search[from]=10+years+ago&search[to]=now&search[sort_mode]=relevance

Right, that's the pure "turn everything upside down" approach. Which
has something to be said for it. The problem is, it can always happen that
the most recent post in your arrangement is 1Biz, which will still be near
the bottom. So it doesn't satisfy the initial requirement: new always at top.

But looking down to wizard's latest post ( :) ) he brings up the point of
mobile usage. Where getting to the meat course first is really important
and indented threading on a tiny screen is horrible. Last-post-first-and-
screw-the-threading is probably a very useful option to throw into the
mix there.

It's probably one between when you post and when you refresh the page. After you post, the software actually 'fakes' your new post -- showing you where it would be on the thread as you're viewing it. If you hit reload, then you're seeing your actual post in the current thread. Sometimes in some browsers, that 'fake' post doesn't look right, but usually it's fixed once you reload.

Hot Posts problem

Like many old users, I use hot posts/unread posts as my main access point to the site.

Ive got two problems with its functionality -

(1) if I even open a hot posts window for a board, all the posts subsequently are not shown, even if I didnt have a chance to view them. These items should continue to be shown as long as I have not opened the thread to view new posts, i.e. the "new" market disappears.

(2) less important but still annoying, if I want to post on a board, I have to exit that board interface on hot posts and re-enter it through the regular board menu list. There ought to be some link or functionalilty enabling posting right off "hot posts"

making these two changes would make hot posts much more user-friendly.

hannaone, the formatting *was* "preserved" for me, as i had to "clean up" a couple of link to text spacing issues -- at least twice going in and out of edit. thank goodness, because it is tedious.

It's been 3 months now, any update with a fix on this problem? I've added a few Places in the recent months, and would like to be able to edit, add hours, website, etc.

Okay, the last two days, no read posts collapsed. I've tried the back button, I've tried refreshing, I don't know what else to do. I hate to whine, but dang, there's a lot to re-read.

Put up an add for business- unable to edit

We don't allow posters to post ads on Chowhound. We did remove the post you made advertising your business. It seems you are talking about the listing in our "Places" database. We do allow business owners to use that database to provide basic, factual information about their businesses but please don't consider it a tool for advertisement.

We do have a technical glitch right now where some posters have trouble editing Place pages, so we've gone ahead and made that change for you.
